Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage

About a few weeks ago I did a review on the Fist of the North Star for Anime Saturday, well the good news is that I have managed to get the video game and here is the review.

Story

The story takes place on a post apocalyptic world where…… you probably know the story already if you read the Fist of the North Star Review so there’s no point in me repeating what I said before. Although in the video game it goes through all of the first series up until the final battle between Kenshiro and Raoh. One bonus of the video game is that you can play the original story through the perspective of characters such as Rei, Mamiya and Toki. There is also a dream mode where you can play an all new story through most of the characters from the anime/manga, these characters include Shin, Jagi and even Raoh. Bear in mind this story is fictitious and doesn’t affect the main story, hence the name ‘Dream Mode’.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to what you would find on Dynasty Warriors, probably because Koei (the makers of Dynasty Warriors) handled development. Instead of swords and shields the game’s weapon of choice is the martial arts skills that each of the characters practice. The gameplay is decent and it really captures the sense that you are in the shoes of some of the most iconic characters in the series. As well as a combination of kicks and punches each of the characters have signature moves, most of which appear on the anime. It is satisfying to use the signature moves as they add to the whole experience, especially when performing the famous Hundred Crack Fist of the North Star.

Graphics/Audio

The graphics and the audio serve their purpose well, the sounds of people beating the crap out of each other is good to listen to whilst you dealing the hurt on bad guys. There is some lag in the sounds during certain cutscenes but that can be ignored. There is also some visual glitches in that if you are holding a steel beam they can go into walls as you walk past.

Final Verdict

This game isn’t exactly perfect and if that sort of thing bothers you, simply don’t buy it. If you are like me a huge fan of the anime then this is a wise investment, so go to Amazon, Ebay or Craigslist or something if you love Fist of the North Star.
