Super Smash Bros an ever expanding series

With the latest game being released earlier this month it is finally time to take a look at what I consider to be the most important changes throughout Nintendo’s popular fighting game franchise

A quick explanation of the game series is that all of Nintendo’s biggest franchises come together in a battle for the ages, this is no ordinary fighting game series however because instead of draining health bars the goal is to try and knock your opponent out of the arena by either knocking them off the edge of a map or by dealing enough damage that you can knock them into oblivion with a few hits.

Each character has unique moves and abilities which need to be learned to become a master of using the character, most people eventually stick with a main character they play as so it’s best to try them all to see who suits your fighting style the best.

The games also had various collectibles in the form of trophies, character bios, characters and stages.

Super Smash Bros was released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 it was directed by Masahiro Sakurai, developed by Hal Laboratories and Published by Nintendo

The first Super Smash Bros game had a fairly small roster with only 8 characters to start with and 12 altogether

Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Samus, Yoshi, Pikachu, Kirby and Fox are the starters and Luigi, Caption Falcon, Ness and Jiggly Puff are all unlockable.

The game came with 9 battle stages and four modes, the modes being single player, training, break the targets and board the platforms.

Break the targets had players needing to break a certain number of targets within a time limit with each character having a unique level.

During board the platforms players had too jump on 10 floating platforms as quickly as possible with each character having a unique stage.

Follow this link for more information on the game as well as a list of smaller differences compared to other games in the series

In 2001 we got Super Smash Bros Melee, it was released on the Nintendo GameCube and was one of the main reasons for the consoles success it sold more than 7 million copies, directed by Masahiro Sakurai the game was developed by HAL laboratories and Intelligent Systems and it was published by Nintendo.

The game features 25 playable characters with some characters needing certain tasks completed in order to fight them in a battle to add them to your roster Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pickachu, Captain Falcon, Ness, Peach, Bowser, Zelda and Ice Climbers are all available from the get go while Jiggly Puff, Luigi, Dr Mario, Pichu, Falco, Marth, Young Link, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Roy and Mr Game and Watch are all unlock-able throughout the game.

maxresdefault

The game also comes with 29 stages, 18 stages are available from the beginning while the remaining 11 are all unlockable.

Board the platforms was missing from this game however every other mode from the first game was here as well as new modes adventure mode, all star mode, event match, home run contest and multi man melee were added.

Adventure mode was very similar to classic mode as it followed a similar formula and concept however the stages were longer and some of the levels required the player to complete challenges.

All star mode puts the player against an army of humanoid characters in a fight to the death.

Event match was a super fun mission mode where players had to complete missions each with a unique theme and challenge

Multi man melee has the player in a battle with a handful of other enemies that are easy to knock out but become more difficult through out the match, this mode can be extremely challenging at times but is a blast to play.

In home run contest players would have to attack a sandbag with a baseball bat trying to deal as much damage as they can within 10 seconds with the idea being to hit the sandbag far across the field.

During Multiplayer some fun changes in the rules made matches both more entertaining and more challenging, these modes are as follows Super Sudden Death, Giant Melee, Tiny Melee, Invisible Melee, Slo-Mo Melee, Single Button Melee, Lightning Melee, Stamina Mode and Tournament Mode.

Super Smash Bros Brawl was released in 2008 for the Nintendo Wii and was the third game in the Super Smash Bros franchise the game was again directed by Masahiro Sakarai, it was developed by Hal Laboratories along side, SORA, Game Arts, Monolith Soft, Paon and Intelligent Systems.

Brawl was the first game in the series that supported various controller types, the standard Wii mote, a Wii mote and Nunchuck, a Gamecube controller and the Wii Classic controller were all able to connect up the console when playing the game.

maxresdefault (1)

The game had 39 playable characters, 25 were available from the get go while the remaining 14 needed to be unlocked by completing challenges throughout the game, some characters could be unlocked through the Sub Space Emissary, this was also the first game in the series to add third party characters the the roster.

Mario, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Peach, Link, Zelda, Samus, Fox, Pikachu, Ice Climbers, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Zero Suit Samus, Pokemon Trainer, Lucas, Ike, Pit, Wario and Captain Olimar were the starting roster while Ness, Marth, Luigi, Falco, Captain Falcon, Lucario, ROB, Ganondorf, Mr Game and Watch, Sonic the Hedgehog, Solid Snake, Jigglypuff, Toon Link and Wolf were unlockable through the game.

hqdefault

The game also had 41 battle stages and included the ability to build your own stages which you could play with your friends.

Z

Classic Mode, All Star Mode, Event Match, Stadium, Home Run Contest, Target Test, Multi Man Melee, Training Mode and Adventure Mode returned here however Adventure Mode was now called the Sub Space Emissary, the Sub Space Emissary was an epic story mode with CGI cut-scenes and various stages, the mode lasted around 8 hours in length which is the longest mode for any Smash Bros game so far, many fans disliked the Sub Space Emissary but I personally had a really good time with it.

Boss Battle Mode was a new addition to the Stadium mode which has players competing in a boss rush against every boss in the game.

Follow this link for more information on the game as well as a list of smaller differences compared to other games in the series

The fourth game in the series was the first to be released on more than one system, it was released on the 3DS and the Wii U in 2014, it was developed by Bandai Namco and SORA, published by Nintendo and directed by Masahiro Sakarai, this was also the first game in the series to introduce amiibo compatability, you could scan you amiibos into the game in order to train them up to fight either against other amiibos or yourself

Due to the game being released on two systems I will be discussing both in this section and using images from both versions of the game.maxresdefault (2)

Both games had the same 58 playable characters not including DLC, 39 were available from the beginning while the other 21 characters needed to be unlocked.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Link, Zelda, Shiek, Toon Link, Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Fox, Pikachu, Charizard, Lucario, Captain Falcon, Ike, Pit, Wario, Captian Olimar, Sonic the Hedgehog, Princes Rosalina, Greninja, Robin, Palutena, Villager, Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, Shulk, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Mii Brawler, Mii Sword Fighter and Mii Gunner were the starting characters while Ness, Falco, Wario, Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr Mario, ROB, Ganondorf, Mr Game and Watch, Bowser Jr, Duck Hunt Duo and Jigglypuff are unlockable characters however in Wii U version of the game,

Bowser Jr, Ness, Ganondorf and Jigglypuff and available when you first boot up the game.

Ryu from Street Fighter, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy Seven, Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Corrin and Bayonetta all needed to be purchased from the E-shop as they were DLC

3eKkoKY

Each game came with many battle stages to choose from, the 3DS version for the game had 42 stages and 8 stages of DLC while the Wii U version of the game had 55 stages and 9 DLC stages, only 13 battle stages are featured in both versions of the game.

Classic mode, All Star mode, Home-Run Contest, Target Blast, Multi Man Melee, Event mode and Training Return, Event mode is only available in the Wii U version of the game.

StreeSmash

The new modes here are Street Smash where you would use Street Pass to try and knock an opponents token off a board, this was a 3DS exclusive mode.

800px-MasterOrdersThe Wii U version of the game had two brand new modes which were exclusive to the console the first was Master Orders where players would have to complete challenges set by Master Hand in order to win prizes, players would have to use tickets they win throughout other modes in the game to play this mode.

The last new mode in the game was the Trophy box which was a mode which simply displayed the collectibles you unlocked throughout the game.

https://www.ssbwiki.com/Super_Smash_Bros._4

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the 5th game in the the Super Smash Bros series it was released on the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, Similarly to its predecessor it was developed by Bandai Namco and SORA, published by Nintendo and Directed by Masahiro Sakarai, amiibo compatibility returns with the same features as before.

7ns2i4zs6c911Every character ever playable in a smash bros game makes a return here along with 11 new comers leaving the full roster so far at a staggering 74 with 11 more DLC characters on the way making this the biggest Smash Bros roster yet.

When you fist boot up the game you will have access to Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu with Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Dr Mario, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, Yoshi, Diddy Kong, Zelda, Shiek, Ganondorf, Young Link, Toon Link, Zero Suit Samus, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Falco, Wolf, Jiggly Puff, Mewtwo, Pichu, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, Greninja, Captain Falcon, Ness, Lucas, Ice Climbers, Marth, Roy, Ike, Robin, Lucina, Corrin, Mr Game and Watch, Pit, Palutena, Dark Pit, Wario, Captain Olimar, ROB, Villager, Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, Shulk, Duck Hunt Duo, Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Pacman, Ryu, Cloud Strife, Bayonetta, Mii Brawler, Mii Sword Fighter, Mii Gunner, Princess Daisy, King K Rool, Ridley, Dark Samus, Incineroar, Chrom, Isabelle, Inkling, Ken, Simon Belmont and Richter Belmont all need to be unlocked separately, some characters are known as echo fighters and are similar to other characters in the game for example Ken is the echo fighter for Ryu and Daisy is the Echo Fighter for Peach.

kw0jmogqqve11The game comes with 103 stages with seven being brand new to the series, for the first time in the series, all of the stages are available from the beginning and more will be added as DLC in the future.

super-smash-bros-ultimate

Tournament mode, special smash, team battles, classic mode, training mode, multi-man melee (now called mob smash) all return although classic mode is a little different this time around.

Now every character has a unique classic mode which is suited to the character and the boss that they fight at the end tends to suit their unique game worlds.

8dc63c92761f7c144c8aba848bed56089540bfa9r1-1280-720v2_hq

Spirits are new to the series and can be leveled up individually to help enhance their unique features and abilities, you attach spirits to a fighter in order to help them in battle, every spirit has a different ability for example one spirit might grant immunity to lava while another might allow a player to start a match with a rocket belt.

DuBnHbNU0AYRsL8_thumb

There are two ways to obtain spirits one way is by playing through the games adventure mode now called World of Light, this story mode has the player travelling across a vast world in order to save various possessed Nintendo characters from a great threat, the other way is through a mode called spirit board where you can quickly defeat enemies in order to win spirits.

https://www.ssbwiki.com/Super_Smash_Bros._Ultimate

And that is where we are left for now with the Super Bros Series, there has been rumors that there may not be anymore after Ultimate although I find that hard to believe but whether the rumors are true or not it has been a lot of fun taking a look at this ever expanding game series.

Book Review: Jack Dawkins by Terry Ward

I would like to say a big thank you to Publishers Push and the author of this book Terry Ward for supplying me with a review copy of this book.

This excellent book by author Terry Ward follows the story of Jack Dawkins better known as the Artful Dodger in the Charles Dickens classic novel Oliver Twist

The story continues where Jack’s fate was hinted at in Oliver Twist presumably being sent to an Australian penal colony after being caught stealing a silver snuff box.

In this continuation of the Dodgers story, Jack Dawkins is given one last chance to change his ways narrowly escaping the punishment he was lined up for.

Jack is sent to live with a man called Mr Godden who gives Jack work to do on his farm, his beautiful daughter Lysette catches Jack’s eye and she soon becomes the new focus of the Dodgers life.

Jack Dawkins by Terry Ward is a splendid book that shows the Artful Dodger in a new light, the book shows the past criminal as a caring and brave individual who shows several acts of heroism throughout the story in order to gain the heart of the person he loves.

In another side plot in relation to the Dodgers parents we see an emotional side to Jack that makes you feel for the character and root for his success.

My favourite part of the book was the love that Jack felt for Lysette Godden, I love a good romance so this soon got me hooked on the story, I also really enjoyed the references to Jacks criminal past as well as some character appearances from the Charles Dickens book Oliver Twist.

Jack Dawkins by Terry Ward may be one of the best books I have read in a long time, it is an excellent take on the Artful Dodger that gives the character more humanity and in my opinion makes him more likeable, the author was very brave to write a story based on such a timeless character but he did a wonderful job and I will be look out for Terry Wards books in the future.

5 STAR REVIEWS FOR JACK DAWKINS’!!
Jack Dawkins, AKA as the Artful Dodger, wants to set the record straight about what happened to him after he was obliged to take up lodgings in Newgate Prison. Thanks to the genius of Lionel Bart, we all have a lasting image of him skipping away into the sunset, arm in arm with Fagin. Well, the young jackanapes is here to tell you that the truth is very different.
You don’t have to know your way round archaic words, history or the works of Mr. Dickens, because Jack has very kindly provided a Glossary that you can refer to as he relates in his own inimitable fashion, his encounters with an unusually erudite Bow Street Runner, murderous villains, turnkeys, philanthropists, Innkeepers, Owlers, passing strangers-and Miss Lysette Godden, the first human being he has ever loved. Strangely enough, Jack also reveals that, as he conducts what proves to be a highly dangerous search for his mother and father, he finds his true self.

k;osk;osekr

I thought you might like to take a look at Jack Dawkins’ ghost-writer.
You can see more of both of us on the You Tube video ‘the spirit of the Artful Dodger’,
in which Jack does the decent thing by returning from ‘Mutton Pie and Porter heaven’ to give me a helping hand.

Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (1987) Review

Ooh a sequel to the legend of Zelda, I cannot wait !!

Zelda_II_The_Adventure_of_Link_boxart

Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link is the weirdest Zelda game I have ever played, it was the second game released in the franchise and is considered to be the black sheep of the Legend of Zelda series, so without further ado lets check out Links second adventure.

images

After destroying Ganon in the first game, it is revealed by Impa that Princess Zelda has had a sleeping curse cast on her and will only awaken when the seal protecting the triforce of wisdom is broken, Link can only break the seal by placing six crystals into statues hidden in palaces across the land.

zelda-2.na3

The game has an over world which is kind of similar to most of the 2D Zelda games although I wouldn’t expect to be finding too many secrets here if I was you, I found the over world to be quite bare with it mostly being used for grinding Experience Points and traversing between areas..

Zelda_II_The_Adventure_of_Link_(3)

Zelda 2 an action adventure 2D Plat-former with RPG elements, this was definitely a risky direction to take the series and thankfully it didn’t stick because while this game isn’t necessarily bad, if its game style became the series staple we may not have the amazing Zelda games we have today.

When traversing the over world Link can be forced into action platforming sections which require him to defeat enemies in order to gain experience points which can be used to upgrade his health, magic or strength once he levels up.

005

Through out the game you can find many towns which can be used to heal, restore magic and to find wizards who can teach you spells, in order to find these wizards you normally have do something for example one wizard requires you to find a magic mirror and another requires you bring the wizards daughter a trophy you can find in a cave at the start of the game.

PQ90kq

The palaces have Link defeating enemies, collecting keys and opening doors in order to find the statues however in traditional Zelda fashion the palaces are tricky to traverse but with the platforming game style this feels more like a Metroid game in my opinion, at the end of each palace you must fight one of the very creative and difficult boss fights before finding the statues and handing over a crystal.

download

Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link is an ok adventure game but it is far from a good Legend of Zelda title in my opinion, the biggest issue I have is that the games difficulty is unfair, there is a lot of grinding to do if you want any chance of finishing it, areas such as death mountain are too long with few power ups to help you survive and every time you get game over you are sent back to the first screen of the game, on a lighter note the game has a nice soundtrack, colourful and fantastic visuals and responsive controls but apart from that this is one Zelda game you could quite happily skip unless you really want to play it. 5.5/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link for the Nintendo Entertainment System

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Review

220px-Invasion_of_the_body_snatchers_movie_poster_1978The 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a science fiction horror film that was directed by Phillips Kaughman and stars Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Lenord Nimoy, Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum, it should also be noted that this is a remake of a 1956 film of the same name and is based on a book called The Body Snatchers which was written by Jack Finney.

uxVNAc

Matthew Bennell a health inspector in the city of San Francisco begins to notice a pattern of people saying that their love ones have changed some even going as far to say that they are not the same people.

bodysnatchers1Later on in the film it becomes obvious that something supernatural is happening to people as human beings are being copied and replaced when they are re-birthed by plants leaving their old bodies to corrode at a rapid pace and a new pod person taking their place in life.

Invasion-of-the-Body-Snatchers-1978-movie-still

The film has a great premise and fantastic cast to go with it, out of all of the big names in the movie my favourite performance was by none other than Jeff Goldblum who played Jack although I felt that everyone was the perfect choice for their roles.

invasion-of-the-body-snatchers-1978-donald-sutherland-pod-people-cloning

This film doesn’t really have a unique alien design as the aliens are essentially clones of the people they snatch, however the birthing process is very disturbing and gross, watching the pod people come out of the flowers always gives me the shivers.

The 1978 remake of Invasion of the body Snatchers is a disturbingly good time and a film with a very interesting premise, its one of the best horror films on the market and is one you should try and stick on this Halloween.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Super Metroid (1994) Review

downloadSuper Metroid is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System Game and is the third game in the Metroid Franchise, it is a direct sequel to Metroid 2 Return of Samus.

Similar to its predecessors Super Metroid is an Action Adventure Game which was developed and published by Nintendo.

FWv.540x304

After bringing a baby metroid to scientists for study, Samus receives a distress call after Ridley steals the baby metroid and kills every human in his sight, Samus travels back to the Planet Zebes (Location in first Metroid game) in order to rescue the baby metroid once again.

140128-supermetroid112

Like its predecessors Samus is first only armed with her trusty arm cannon however with some exploration using the new map system you can easily find new weapons and upgrades, introduced in Super Metroid was the gravity suit which allows Samus to move freely through liquid environments such as Lava, the grapple beam which allows Samus to grapple and swing from certain terrains making traversing certain areas a lot easier and the final new addition worth mentioning is the hyper beam that is only available for one segment of the mission however it is the most powerful weapon in the game and is great fun to use.

That_s_one_doomed_Space_Marine_As I previously stated Super Metroid introduces a map system however it is still far from easy to not get lost, the map while useful will only update if you either reach an area of the game therefore unlocking it on the map or by finding hidden map rooms that will unlock large chunks of the map for you however this will not show where bosses or upgrades are hiding so be wary of  where you are going.

hqdefaultSuper Metroids visuals are stunning and are easily some of the best in the series, the artists pushed the SNES to its limits on this one giving us a perfect blend of dark and protruding colours leaving the game with a creepy yet exciting feeling to it, I had a blast seeing all of the different areas of the game however I must say that the boss designs took the cake for me, I really enjoyed to designs for Kraid (pictured above) and Crocomire however they were all fantastic and suited their respected areas nicely.

As much as I really enjoyed the first two Metroid games I wasn’t too fond of the soundtracks as I found both of them lacking in tracks and quality, I am pleased to say that Super Metroid has a stellar soundtrack, its creepy and a lot of fun, the game has plenty of music throughout choosing to use slower and more creepier tracks to emphasise the the emptiness and danger of the corridors while using faster and more exciting tracks to pump up the adrenaline for more dangerous scenarios such as boss fights and escape sequences.

Super Metroid is an amazing entry to the franchise and is a fan favourite of many Metroid players, it is better than its predecessors in every regard due to its beautiful and artistic graphics, amazing and scary soundtrack and great controls, the only issue I had with the game is very small and that is trying to perform a move called a wall jump, it was awkward to pull off and at times it had me a little frustrated but its only really needed once in the game so its not so bad, Super Metroid is an amazing journey and it is well worthy of a 9.8/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of Super Metroid if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Dark Skies (2013) Review

Dark_Skies_1-Sht.indd

Dark Skies is a Science Fiction horror movie directed by Scott Stewart and starring Keri Russell, J.K. Simmons and Josh Hamilton.

8RixCaThe Barrett family enjoy the simple life in a quiet American town, that is until strange occurrences begin happening around the house and eventually to themselves.

OwbFtL

After some of the unusual activity becomes very concerning Lacy and Daniel decide to visit Edwin Pollard an alien specialist who tells them that they are being visited by an alien species called the greys who select humans for taking.

S4TG71

The greys tend to take children most of the time and the Barrett family become very concerned that one of their children may have been selected for taking by the greys.

Dark_SkiesThe alien design in Dark Skies isn’t too creative but is immediately recognisable, you will notice that they look rather generic and are very similar to how aliens are portrayed in most media.

dark-skies-4657

Overall the entire cast did a good job of portraying their characters but one person who really stood out was Keri Russel who played Lacy Barrett the mother of the family, she gave a performance which felt real to me almost as if the children in the film were her real children as she comforted and protected them, she also gave an excellent performance throughout all of her other scenes and was genuinely a joy to watch.

Dark Skies was a surprisingly good film, I wasn’t expecting much from it but it managed to cut down on the jump scares and gave a really creepy vibe, the greys are terrifying and the mere presence of them in the film sent shivers down my spine, give it a watch if you get the chance.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Dark Skies (2013) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Alien Resurrection (1997) Review

alien,-la-resurrection-21300Next in the Alien franchise is 1997’s Alien Resurrection which was Directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet and was written by Joss Whedon.

alienres300_zps0b7b56db200 years after the events of Alien 3 Ellen Ripley is cloned and the Alien Queen that was in her chest has been removed.

hqdefaultThe reason Ripley was cloned was because scientists wanted to bring back and clone the Xenomorphs for studying

After an unfortunate issue with the imprisoned Xenomorph clones the creatures manage to escape onto the ship leaving Ripley and a group of mercenaries to find a way to escape and destroy the creatures once and for all.

hqdefault (1)

This movie is by far the most unnecessary and pointless of the Alien films, but in its defence it is way more fun than Alien 3, its extremely silly in so many ways that you have to wonder if it was ever intended to be taken seriously, some of my favourite silly moments include the basketball scene, the scene where Johner shoots a small spider and the ridiculous death of General Perez.

imageedit_1_6671231649The film is not all silliness though as it does have a couple of disturbing scenes, the most memorable has got to be when Ripley finds her failed clones with one in particular begging for death.

alien-resurrection-cast

Even though its fair to say that this movie is not very good I have to admit that I really love the cast, everyone in this movie is over the top and full of sass and one liners even Sigourney Weaver doesn’t seem to take the role too seriously and this overacting from the cast suits the tone of the movie extremely well. Winona Ryder is in the film playing a character called Call, I wouldn’t say this is one of her best roles but she is still good none the less.

Alien Resurrection is considered to be one of the worst films ever put to screen and while I will admit that its not a good Alien movie it is a really entertaining watch, its cheesy, packed with action scenes and is hilarious, it never needed to exist and probably shouldn’t have but if you don’t take it seriously I can guarantee that you will enjoy it.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Alien Resurrection (1997) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.
