Krusty’s Super Fun House (1993) Review

krusty-s-super-fun-house-usa-europe-v1-1

Originally named Krusty World in Japan Krusty’s Super Fun House was a puzzle/platformer developed and produced by Fox Williams and Acclaim Entertainment, the game was released on a whole array of systems including Commodore Amiga, NES, DOS, Master system, Megadrive, Game Boy and SNES.

Krusty the Clown has had a rat infestation at his playhouse and with the help of various Simpsons characters he has to exterminate them.

In the game you play as Krusty, the game plays as a 2D platformer for the most part but the main aspect of the game is puzzles, during the puzzles Krusty must find and direct rats to their doom using different items such as blocks and buckets, if you place an item down on the ground the rats can climb on top of it to reach higher platforms and you need to keep doing this until they enter a machine which kills them.

Krusty can obtain various weapons in the game which can destroy walls and enemies, my favourite weapon is the bog standard custard pie as it has a nice range and is fairly easy to hit your target.

Graphically the game is ok no matter which version you play, the Gameboy version is black and white and the 8 bit versions are slightly less pixelated than the 16 versions of the game, the visuals are quite bland and do get a bit boring later on, the big issue is that a lot of sprite work had been copied and pasted making some of the later levels very difficult to navigate, the game play also varies from each version, they all follow the same formula but some systems ran the game substantially better than others, I played the SNES version of the game which was fine however I have heard that the PC versions such as DOS and Commodore Amiga suffered from a lot of slowdown.

All in all Krustys Fun House is boring, it was a drag having to play through the entire thing and the whole experience was just plain, dull and not very exciting, it has decent controls and ok graphics but its lame game play and looped soundtrack does not help the game shine in the slightest.

3.8/10

Donald Duck: The Lucky Dime Caper (Master System/Game Gear) (1991) Review

Lucky_Dime_Caper_Starring_Donald_Duck.jpgDonald Duck the Lucky Dime Caper is an action platformer which was released in 1991 for the Sega Master System and the Sega Game Gear, the game was one of the many line of games starring Donald Duck in some of video games earlier years.

The evil witch Magica De Spell has stolen Uncle Scrooges lucky dime and has kidnapped Huey, Dewey and Louie, Donald realises that he must find and rescue his nephews and sets off to save them but not before Uncle Scrooge offers Donald a special reward if he also returns his lucky dime.

696304-lucky_dime_caper_proto_sms_10Like I said the game is an action platformer, its fairly basic and what you would expect Donald can jump on enemies to defeat them, he can also use two types of weapons a hammer and a frisbee, the hammer can be used to whack enemies at a close range while the frisbee can be used to attack enemies from afar, you can only hold one of these items at a time which is quite annoying as I wish you could swap between them, apart from that everything is simple enough you need to get from point A to point B and at the end of every stage is a boss battle.

The boss fights are not very interesting and they are all very similar, every one of them gets defeated in the exact same way you either have to hit the boss or something related to that boss a couple of times and they will eventually fall.

The gameplay is basic as you would expect with an old Disney game and the controls are easy enough to learn but one problem I do have is that the game feels just a little bit stiff, making some of the jumps can be very difficult to make because it feels like the game is fighting with you by pushing Donald back which caused me to fall to my death way too many times.

The game looks fantastic the color’s burst out of the screen, the animation is smooth and all of the artistic choices suit the different environments perfectly although some of the character sprites in certain stages would be questionable whether they would be appropriate to use in media today.

ghghgh The music is the usual generic little tunes that you usually get from games that don’t have a massive budget to work with and this is no exception, none of the music is memorable or even that nice to listen too I find that I always get bored of it quickly whenever I play the game.

Overall Donald Duck: Lucky Dime Caper is an ok game, it has great graphics but overall everything else is nothing special and the whole experience can be a little bit boring, out of both versions I would recommend the Master System version over the Game Gear version as the Game Gear port does have some recognizable issues such as item placements being different and not being able to back track, it’s not the worst Donald Duck game out there but it’s definitely not the best 5.4/10

Land of Illusion (1992) (Master System/Game Gear) Review

Land_of_Illusion_starring_Mickey_Mouse_Coverart

Released in 1992 for the Sega Master System and 1993 for the Sega Game Gear Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is the second game in the Mickey Mouse Illusion series.

Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse-3

One stormy night Mickey Mouse is reading book the worlds greatest fairy tales, Mickey starts feeling very drowsy and eventually falls asleep, when Mickey wakes up he is in a fairy tale land, a girl who appears to be Daisy Duck tells Mickey about an evil phantom who stole the magic crystal from her village and because of this the land which was once filled with happiness and laugher has been replaced with sadness, after hearing such a sad tale Mickey decides that he will defeat the phantom and will return the magic crystal to the village.

Land of Illusion is a platform game, the player takes control of Mickey Mouse and its their job to make sure that Mickey survives each of the 14 in game levels.

There are many enemies that Mickey must either avoid or defeat, in order to attack enemies Mickey must either pick up an item such as a block or a nut which he must then throw at the attacking enemy or Mickey can defeat enemies by jumping in the air and hitting the enemies with a ground pound.

Through out the game Mickey will need to defeat multiple bosses in order to rescue the other villagers who are fairytale versions of Mickeys friends such as Donald, Minnie and Goofy, after saving these characters they will often tell Mickey where he can find new items in the game which he will need in order to progress further.

All of these items have different uses

The Flute gives Mickey the ability to exit a level at any time while also keeping any treasures or items he picked up.

The Magic Potion gives Mickey the ability to shrink to a very small size which will allow him to enter small doors and narrow passages.

Tiny Mickey

The Rope gives Mickey the ability to climb walls which makes it easier to reach high areas.

The Shoes are very light in weight and they allow Mickey to walk on top of clouds

And the Magic Beans will grow a beanstalk that Mickey can climb to get to the Phantoms Castle way up in the sky.

The controls are almost perfect and to be honest there is not much I can complain about,  the controls are tight and very responsive to the player, using different items is really easy and only requires very simple button combinations and controlling Mickey is genuinely a pleasant experience.

I do have one issue with the controls for some reason every time Mickey comes to a stop he slides in the direction he is facing, this is very slight but it does cause issues in certain parts of the game,  I would understand if this happened if you were moving fast but this happens every time you move and because of this its a small issue that can cause big problems.

The game looks fantastic considering that it can only run in 8 bit, the colours burst off of the screen and everything is animated extremely well and everything in the game moves very smoothly.

I do wish that the backgrounds of some stages were not as empty as they are, this in no way effects the game play but the levels do genuinely look quite bare and I do believe that adding more things to the backgrounds would make the game more pleasant to look at but this is an issue that only applies to some of the stages.

Bare Background

Every level has many secrets and short cuts to find,  Mickey will also need to solve many different puzzles, avoid many dangerous obstacles and defeat many bosses during his adventure.

ghost bossThe music is nice but that’s about it not one track in this game was memorable to me, a lot of the time the music sounds like a fun little tune on a constantly repeating loop, but even though the music is nothing amazing it is fun to listen too and its not in any way annoying.

Land of Illusion is a charming little game about everyone’s favourite mouse, I cant say that this game is a masterpiece but its a fun little side scroller with mostly great controls, fantastic graphics and animation, a fun and happy soundtrack and an innocent and easy to understand story line that anyone can enjoy.

Not an amazing game but its still loads of fun and is overall a great time 7.8/10
