Spongebob Squarepants: Creature from the Krusty Krab is a 2006 action game based on the Spongebob Squarepants characters and world, it was released in 2006 for the PS2, Wii and Gamecube, there was also a game of the same title released on the GBA, DS and PC however I am purely discussing the console release here.
Its bedtime in Bikini Bottom and we are taken into the dream world of three fan favourite characters Spongebob, Patrick and Plankton. With the game taking place in dreams all possibilities are open and with a clever twist they may all connect with eachother.
This is no ordinary game in the sense that the narrative is all over the place, there is no goal as such and each set of levels is unique within themselves offering the player a large range of gameplay styles and experiences.
I loved the Patrick sections that focused on beat em up gameplay and 3D platforming, the plankton sections focussed mainly on horror, the second part stood out where players were tasked with destroying bikini bottom using the power of an enlarged Plankton.
The main gameplay style that is shown in the game revolves around vehicles and on rail vehicle stages. These are very boring and not too interesting. I suppose you could argue that this was an early attempt at a Spongebob racing game before Nickelodeon Kart Racers would be released many years later.
The visuals are amazing and I don’t say this from a graphical perspective but from its creativity and how it adapts its visuals to fit perfectly into the natural environment that the dream is based on.
The soundtrack is really nice, it fits the environments and tone of the game perfectly, I love the main menu music, it really gets you excited for the game that’s ahead.
Creature from the Krusty Krab is surprisingly a good game, apart from the racing section the entire experience is a lot of fun and the variety of gameplay styles means that there is always something new to look forward too. There are three endings to the game depending on which character you finish the final level with however you can only unlock these by finding all of the characters coloured collectables in the games story mode. I dont actually recommend doing this as all of the endings are mediocre and lead to the same finale either way.
My Favourite Spongebob Episodes – Band Geeks
How could I do a Spongebob Month without talking about the absolute masterpiece that is Band Geeks.
In the episode Squidward is tormented by his rival Squilliam that he was supposed to have his Band play in the Bubble Bowl and sarcastically asked Squidward to bring his band instead knowing that he doesnt have one.
Squidward agrees taking a risk and trying to put together a band consisting of the Bikini Bottom citizens which unfortunately doesnt work out until the very end of the episode when Spongebob convinves them to really try and do a great job for Squidwards sake.
Many memes and fan favourite moments later we are gifted what I consider to most self aware and greatest ending to any Spongebob episode and a sweet victory for squidward.
And that is the end of our Spongebob month of 2020, I hope you enjoyed all of my reviews this month and I cannot wait to do a Spongebob month again in the future, there are so many more games and media I still need to cover so even though it wont be any time soon I can promise we will revisit Bikini Bottom again in the future.
