ICO (2001) Review

Developed by Japan Studio and Team ICO, this game while it now holds a cult following did not meet sales expectations upon its original release, it would later go on to inspire the vast superior Shadow of the Colossus and one of my personal favourite games. I never had a chance to check this one out until recently and I was curious to see what I missed out on.

A young boy with horns is slowly dragged into a deserted castle high on the cliffs to be sacrificed to the Shadow Queen, for centuries children who grow horns have been locked away here and left to starve to death but luckily for Ico he manages to escape from his tomb and with the help of Yorda a Princess of light and they both work together to escape the castle and its labyrinth inspired walls.

The game is unusual for its lack of conventional video game design it has very little focus on combat and player deaths are few and far between, the main aspect is puzzle solving where you need to interact with the castles mechanical engineering, blow open doors and pull levers in order to adjust areas that Yorda is able to climb and to allow her to traverse along the same paths as the much braver Ico.

Yorda is able to use her light to open otherwise inaccessible doors and pathways so keeping her safe is a must, at set moments in the story shadow creatures will grab the Princess and drag her into the darkness, if this happens Ico will turn to stone and die instantly.

These creatures can be defeated by hitting them with a stick or even better a sword, another way is to simply grab Yordas hand and run to a nearby light blocked door, this will kill all shadows in the area but the likely hood of a door even being available is rare and this can only be done in select moments during the story.

Yorda moves very slowly throughout the game which can be frustrating at times, I spent the majority of my playthrough holding her hand so she was forced to run but this can only be done on ground and near the very end of the game due to a story progression it becomes near impossible to run with her as she will keep tripping over.

In essence the best way I can describe the gameplay is that it is almost like a giant Zelda Dungeon with much easier combat and some ways easier puzzle solutions but difficulty is not what the developers had in mind while creating this game.

This is more of an interactive story than it is a action-adventure game as some may call this, the game is pretty easy including its final boss fight, without a health bar or a heads up display dying seems to be less important as Ico doesnt seem to have much of a threat, in fact to my knowledge the shadows can cant hurt him and only really go for Yorda, he can be taken out with basic platforming mistakes but thats about it.

I think this works in the games favour as it makes it stand out and to be honest I think if they did focus more on this being more than an interactive story the game would have had much less of an impact because it wouldn’t hold a candle to other Action-Adventure games of the time.

Graphically the game is very impressive for an early PS2 title and it has a great use of darkness and basic design to help emphasise the eerie sense of being lost in the castle halls, the few outside meadow areas which are safe from the shadows are much more relaxing in design and its rendering of the castle from such a height for example from the top of cliffs to the waters below would have taken a lot of development work in the PS2’s early stages.

Ico’s soundtrack is very limited which works well with the basic game play level design and narrative while traversing the castle and its many yards you will be lucky to find any music which adds to the lonely and rather empty atmosphere of Ico and Yordas journey and any music we do get is basic so it doesn’t take away from the narrative that is being told, a genius decision from composer  Michiru Oshima and is something I would like to see inspiring more games in the future.

Ico is a fantastic game and for what it was aiming to achieve it did a fantastic job of giving us an all around simple game with its story, gameplay and soundtrack but while this is outstanding in many ways and I do truly love the game its simplicity also leads to its biggest downfall.

The game is very short coming in at around 6 and a half hours for a first playthrough, there isnt even any collectibles or much replay value apart from maybe aiming faster completion times which may seem like nit picking for a game that is now 22 years old but we wouldn’t take kindly to a new PS5 game selling at full price and being this short with no side content so why should a PS2 game from 2001 get the exception bearing in mind people would have paid out the nose if they pre-ordered this back then.

Overall Ico is a game well worth playing, at the moment it is included as part of Playstations Classic catalogue and if you are subscribed to the service I recommend giving it a go

Revenge of Creature (1955) Review

The Season of Spooks and fear is among us and even though this year due to unforeseen circumstances parties and trick or treating has been cancelled, we can still enjoy some spooky media so please join me for Halloween 2020 !

Revenge of the Creature is the sequel to the much beloved sci fi-horror classic the Creature from the Black Lagoon

The opening of the film really caught me off guard because it used a mixture of the previous films footage as well as new scenes briefly explaining the events of the last film and this ultimately leads up to the creature being captured and put on display in a sea park.

The majority of the film takes place in this sea park and I have mixed feelings about this because while the film is scripted well enough that the simple environment of the aquarium do work well from a story telling narrative it is difficult to not miss the amazing shots from the North Florida Wakulla Springs.

Compared to its predecessor I would argue that this film is more light hearted and sillier but I think it works more in its favour because of this, a great example of this is the scene in the laboratory, it opens to a monkey painting and then eventually the films shows us a goofy moment regarding a missing lab rat from a scientist played by Clint Eastwood, this film was actually his debut role although he isn’t credited as being in the picture.

In this movie we get see the creature on Land much more than we do in water, he’s also more brutal and more animalistic with his mannerisms and the way he kills his victims, It’s hard not feel sorry for him in this movie because all he wants is to get back to the Black Lagoon and apart from trying to take the female lead with him to the water he doesn’t do anything that doesn’t have just cause, he only really kills people when he feels threatened and doesn’t do much harm to others.

There is a great scene film in this film where the creature escapes its captivity and all of a sudden the humans that imprisoned it panic and do not know what to do, in this scene the creature is only trying to leave the sea park but everyone is so terrified of him that he has to fight through their terror to try and get back to the sea so that he can breathe.

The casting is great in this movie and all of the characters are very likable, the three main cast members give the best the performances and give the most screen time, of course the creature is yet again played by Ricou Browning for the underwater scenes and for the land segments Tom Hennesey takes over the role. The two main love interests and scientists in the film are Clete Ferguson and Helen Dobson played John Agar and Lori Nelson.

I really enjoyed this movie and I like it better than the first, the original film is great but its a little slow in places, I like this version because it has silly moments that mix well with the horror, and with creature now having more screen time and some more on land segments his character is more entertaining and overall more memorable, at least this was the case for me and from what I understand a lot of people would disagree with my opinion as the original is often regarded as a much better film, either way there is still one more movie in this trilogy and I’m going to be taking a look at it later on in October so look forward to that.

Lets Take a Look at Miimoto

So you may be aware that Nintendo recently announced a new line of apps they are creating for smart phones and tablets, this is in my knowledge the second app they have officially released with the first being the rather popular Pokemon Shuffle.

After Pokemon Shuffle’s wide success Nintendo started to advertise a new game called Miimoto which allows players to create a Mii and to keep them inside of their phones or tablets.

Everyone was skeptical of this because Nintendo also admitted that a big portion of the game would need players to buy items with real money, this is very similar to the many online game scams out there such as Habbo Hotel and Club Penguin which are free to sign up for but everything else will cost money.

Miimoto got released today and i decided to download it to see what it is all about.

Please keep note that only some of these images are of my mii, this is because I forgot to take screenshots during the setup of the app.

The first thing you will need to do is sign in with either your Nintendo ID, Facebook, Google Plus or just via the Nintendo Website, then you will need to create a mii for the app, my first complaint is that I couldn’t transfer a copy of my mii from my Wii U to my phone and instead had to start from scratch, this is something I hope they fix in the future

After you have your mii you can either answer questions about yourself to go into polls for example I got asked my favorite food and how I deal with stress, you can buy some clothes for your mii, if you sign up today you get a free Mario hat, you can take photos of your mii which you can then send to friends over social media, email or snapchat, you can add friends either using social media or by scanning that friends QR code other wise they need to be sat right next to you and you can play some mini games to help you earn some free coins for shopping as well as some other goodies.

From here you can view your profile, change clothes, change the way your mii looks, search through multiple greetings, take pictures of your mii and you can also store pictures in a gallery, complete some rather boring Nintendo Missions (Add friends for 100 points, create mii for 50 points etc) you can create a QR code which you can use to send your mii to multiple accounts and devices, look for gifts from friends or Nintendo, and change the apps settings.

When taking a photo you can pose your mii in different positions and you can even change the images background.

Finally what is by far my favorite feature of the app is that your mii can talk to you and they even have a voice which you can customize .

Pros

  • Free to download
  • Fun photo feature
  • Lots of choice for mii creation
  • Minigames are quite fun

Cons

  • Not much to do
  • Not enough freedom of choice
  • Adding friends is difficult
  • Your character seems to be stuck in the room and cant seem to leave at all
  • In game items are not cheap

At the end of the day Miimoto is an ok experience but it needs a lot of work, the biggest issue with the game is that you will get bored quickly due to the lack of things to do.

There are a few things I would do to fix some issues, first of all we need to be able to leave the building so that we can communicate with other mii’s, this could also be a new way to add friends, the shop needs work because at the moment you can only buy fashion items and very few furniture, instead of charging us to play mini-games how about we get one free game a day because at least then we would have more of a motive to boot up the app, giving us free rewards for registering Wii U/3DS games, finally Nintendo you need to add this to the E-shop there is no excuse and it would be much easier to play this on the game pad while looking at the game on the TV.

I know I haven’t been very positive regarding the app but please keep in mind that this is only day one of the apps release, yes it’s true that Nintendo should have given us more things to do before the app was released but that doesn’t mean that things wont get better in the future and when they do I will update this article.
