Ape Escape (1999) Review

Ape Escape is the first game in one of Sony’s most memorable but somewhat forgotten franchise, the game was Developed by Japan Studios as an exclusive for the PS1, it was the first game to ever make the Dual Shock Analog controller mandatory for play. A PSP remake came out in 2005 but was criticised for not being as good as the original with less manageable controls.

Specter a popular primate in a monkey themed amusement park gets his paws on a Peak Point helmet created by a scientist at the themepark, however due to it being a prototype it not only gives Specter human intelligence but also makes him extremely evil with a plot to take over the world.

Specter soon gives all of the monkeys at the park Peak Point Helmets and releases them to take over the Professors laboratory, at the time he and his assistant Katie are testing out a new time machine when our games hero Spike and his best friend Buzz turn up at the lab and end up being sent throughout various time periods with the monkeys!

Buzz is mind controlled to Join Specter leaving Spike alone to travel to the different time zones, capture all of the monkeys, defeat Specter and prevent any damages to the worlds historical timeline.

The gameplay here is definitely unique, in a sense the game itself if a 3D platforming collectathon where players need to collect a set number of items before proceeding to the next level.

There are only two items to find in the game, one of these are the Specter Coins which will unlock minigames for multiplayer purposes and the other is the monkeys themselves.

Capturing the monkeys while simple enough can get rather tricky later on in the game, the apes helmets all have a siren which glows a different colour representing their difficulty to capture blue is calm, amber is alert and red is high alert.

Sometimes the Monkeys also carry guns and will shoot Spike taking some real damage to your health (Cookies or Biscuits).

The gadgets you unlock throughout the game really help to make the capturing process go a lot smoother, there are 9 in the game and each is unlocked at different points throughout the campaign.

The Gadgets in no particular order are:

Net – a basic net used for capturing monkeys on land

Water Net – a device which allows Spike to swim fast underwater but can also be used to capture swimming monkeys

Sky Flyer – allows Spike to reach great heights and hover temporarily

Stun Club – used for stunning monkeys and turning wheels

Slingback Shooter – a slingshot with 3 ammo types, regular, explosive and homing

Super Hoop – Spike can run really fast with this helping to get past timed obstacles and attack enemies from behind.

Magic Punch – another stunning item but his one is more powerful and can destroy some walls.

RC Car – a remote controlled car which can get in to smaller spaces to chase out monkeys and help solve puzzles.

Monkey Radar – will pin point Spike in the direction of monkeys, the sonar gets more aggressive the closer to a monkey he gets.

Catching the monkeys is really satisfying and very addictive, I found myself wanting to keep coming back to the game to try and find as many as I could, as I previously stated some monkeys are hidden behind tricky puzzles but they can also be hidden behind armoured machinery such as flying saucers and giant mechs, these are difficult to defeat without taking much damage but soon became my favourite monkeys to get as they added more additional challenge where the rest of the game was a bit easier to relax too.

The games controls are actually quite innovative for the time, there is some effort made to evoke realism in the gameplay, its nothing revolutionary but the efforts made to have players use the other analog stick to physically pull back the elastic of the sling shot or spin the propeller of the sky flyer and super hoop was a risky choice by the developers considering that this differed from traditional and more simplified controls, it definitely took a little time to get used to but after a while I grew to really enjoy these choices and hope to see them used in more games I check out in the future.

The three minigames you unlock by collecting the Specter Coins are a nice reward to players for going the extra mile the ski game was my favourite and the galaxy game was a fun homage to space shooters of the past but the boxing game I couldn’t even land a hit in, I’m not sure if it was genuinely hard to control or I just sucked but either way it didn’t effect the main campaign or my enjoyment with Ape Escape.

Visually the game is packed full of colour which really helps to enhance the visuals, it takes on a cartoony look and does not put too much emphasis on textures, it still stands out though due to its brighter colours something that a lot of family friendly games of the era would use, a great example of another game which utilizes more colours would be Croc Legend of the Gobbo’s or Spyro the Dragon.

The soundtrack is an abosolute thrill ride with non stop pumping tracks to put you in a energetic and entusiastic mood to go and catch those monkeys !, I loved all of the music in the game but my favourite was always the opening title music.

Ape Escape is an absolute blast and a game I really wish I had growing up. Child me would have loved this one and while I did have so much fun doing this one as an adult back then I found the games I did have extremely difficult and could have done with something a little milder such as this.

What is there to say apart from Ape Escape is a one of a kind game which delivers in all categories from its gameplay, replay value, graphics and soundtrack. It offers reason to collect everything with the minigames and a secret final boss even after finishing everything I just want to start it all over again. Its innovative, made with love and as just about as charming as we could ask for needless to say I would be banana’s to award it any less than a clean 10/10

Silent Night (2002) Review

MV5BMTcxMjUwODU3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTk3NDgzMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR51,0,214,317_AL_

Elizabeth Vincken and her son Fritz seek shelter in a cabin in the woods during World War 2, two American soldiers invade the cabin in hopes of finding a bed for a fallen comrade, its not long until three German soldiers turn up and try to kill the Americans but some how Elizabeth convinces all of the soldiers to leave their guns outside and spend Christmas together.

hqdefault

When I heard that this was based on a true story I was genuinely shocked, the plot seems very far-fetched and you would think it almost impossible that enemy forces in World War 2 could ever become friends even if it is Christmas.

Silent-Night-2002-film-images-6bfa0155-5e97-4879-84cd-1412ff53b93

Like I said almost impossible, this apparently really did happen and if that is the case then this movie being bad would be quite an insult to all of those involved in the real life historical event.

PDVD_019

Luckily this film is fantastic all of the actors do a fairly decent job of expressing convincing emotions of sadness, fear and happiness, the movies only actress Linda Hamilton who plays Elizabeth does an exceptional job in her role as the caring mother who hates the war and only wants peace.

Throughout the movie all of the soldiers slowly warm up to each other and they slowly start to realize that even though they are fighting for different sides of the war all of the soldiers share many similarities.

Silent Night is a wonderful movie, it is surprisingly charming and family friendly for a film that carries such a serious subject matter, very young viewers will likely find the film to be uninteresting and boring but anyone who enjoys a good drama or has an interest in History will surely love this film.

With all 12 Christmas movie reviews finished, this brings Raggle Fraggle Reviews to an end until 2016.

Thank you for joining me on what I consider be the most successful year for the website.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year.

ELF (2003) Review

“I’m a cotton headed ninny muggins”

elf-movie-posterBuddy played by funny man Will Ferrell is a human that was accidentally raised by elves after he climbed into Santa’s sack when he was a baby, Buddy stays with the elves until he is an adult which is when he starts to realize that he is a human.

sara-little-yoga-blog-nyc-buddy

After pondering the idea of leaving the North Pole, Buddy eventually decides to go on a search for his real Dad (James Caan) in a magical land called New York City, of course his father thinks that Buddy is an absolute nut case and refuses to accept that he really is his son but after a positive DNA match Walter Hobbs doesn’t have much choice and tries to accept the reality of his long lost son who has come to visit him.

ELF is brilliant and that’s not just because its funny and has a perfect cast but its more to do with that fact that it should have sucked, we have seen the cliche of someone/something not from our world trying to fit in with our world far too often and far too often it has failed miserably

he-man-movie

ELF is hilarious it has brilliant writing, the jokes are extremely funny and very well paced, Will Ferrell makes this film and honestly if he wasn’t in it, it wouldn’t be the same.

200_s

Fun Fact did you know that this was the film that helped Will Ferrell start is acting career? it’s hard to believe that a Christmas movie could be so good that it could help make someone extremely famous.

ELF is a fantastic, funny and wonderful Christmas movie for all the family, all of the actors and actresses are absolutely perfect for the film, of course none of them can top Will Ferrell but James Caan comes pretty close with his role as the asshole dad.

Watch ELF its even better than spaghetti with syrup.

Building a Ginger Bread House: Featuring What Maff Said

Building a Ginger Bread House so amazing that even Hansel and Gretel would be jealous

hansel and gretel

Christmas is the most beloved and celebrated holiday in existence and of course almost every aspect of Christmas is iconic, one popular aspect to Christmas is the many sweets and chocolates that you can freely consume without much guilt simply because its Christmas, I personally have always loved having an excuse to eat loads of crap and so this year me and another blogger (What Maff Said) decided to team up and build a Ginger Bread House.

Now before I begin explaining the steps we took in order to build our marvelous house, I first need to explain the most important things that allowed the magic to happen.

The Ingredients

Gingerbread (6 of 241)

The most important ingredient was the Ginger Bread House itself, yes we did buy it instead of baking, we did this mostly to save time as it took a long time to put the house together and decorate it without having to bake the ingredients as well.

other ingredients include

Cheap Chocolate Peanuts

One tube of Smarties

One bar of Milka White Chocolate

Marshmallow Biscuit Snowmen

and finally Ginger Bread Stars and Penguins which we bought more for the extra ingredients more than the ginger bread itself.

Gingerbread (54 of 241)

The first thing we needed to do was too construct our house,we used some icing glue that was included with the Ginger Bread House kit, this is me using my pretty swag gluing skills.

Gingerbread (72 of 241)

This is Maff fitting the roof on our Ginger Bread Home, he is a perfect craftsman and hes looking pretty snazzy in his Christmas Jumper.

Gingerbread (90 of 241)

At this point the house was looking quite nice, it was a little bear and could most definitely benefit from some tasty decorations but before that we decided that we needed to scrape away any glue that was leaking through the roof and walls.

Gingerbread (130 of 241)

Next we melted up some of that delicious and creamy Milka chocolate and we then spread the white chocolate on to the roof to help create a snow effect.

Gingerbread (183 of 241)

Once the our chocolate snow roof had hardened we decorated the base of our house with some Peanut M and M’s, we originally intended to do the whole house like this but the M and M’s were much too heavy.

Gingerbread (209 of 241)

Maff had  this brilliant idea of creating a path to our house using tiny marshmallows, in this image you can also see him starting to draw around the doors and windows with red icing to help them stand out more.

Gingerbread (234 of 241)

I decided to take the liberty of adding a smarty to the door knobs of each of the doors, and I also added a pattern of smarties to the top of both the front and back of the house.

gingerbread house final (17 of 40)

And that’s it we finished our epic masterpiece, we finalized the house by adding a lot of icing sugar to the roof to give the snow some fluff, we also added two residents to our home.

Unfortunately we never had time to eat the ginger bread house but I’m sure it would have tasted delicious, if it helps we did each eat a snowman and they tasted vile.

Thanks for reading my first collaboration blog.

Ernest Saves Christmas (1988) Review

“The Name is Santa Claus!!!”

Ernest_Saves_Christmas_Poster

Ernest played by the late Jim Varney (who many of you will recognize as the voice of the Slinky Dog in the Toy Story movies), is a hapless taxi driver working on Christmas eve, he drops a passenger off at the airport and it just so happens that the next person to hop in his cab is Santa Claus.

Santa Taxi

After almost 100 years of service Santa is ready to retire and pass the sack over to someone new, the person he has in mind is ex children’s show presenter called Joe Carruthers.

Joe

Santa tries to explain to Joe who he is but of course everyone thinks he’s crazy which results in him being arrested and ridiculed.

Without giving away all of the best the bits, that’s pretty much the entire movie, Santa needs to convince Joe that he isn’t crazy before 7pm on Christmas Eve because otherwise Christmas will have to be cancelled, and of course only cinemas biggest idiot is able to save the day.

Ernest-Saves-Christmas1

Ernest Saves Christmas is the weirdest Christmas movie I have ever seen, the Jokes are really bizarre and half of the time I’m not even sure if they are jokes, even though this isn’t the best written movie of all time, its really bland and most of time it doesn’t make any sense but somehow it’s really entertaining and I blame that mostly on how genuinely badly written and weird the movie is, of course Jim Varney as usual does a fantastic job as the lovable idiot Ernest and the guy who plays Santa Claus is amazing, he has the perfect look, tone of voice and personality for a Santa Claus character and I don’t think anyone could do a better job.

It’s a terrible and perfect movie that everyone should watch at least once.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites Review

choc_chip_3.1oz

When I first saw these I was amazed at how cheap they were the person I bought these from asked for only 3 dollars which is the equivalent of about 2 pounds.

I am a big fan of Cookie Dough so I could not resist picking some of these up.

Nutrition Facts

DSC_0065

One box of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites contains 2 servings of candy.

Each serving contains

200 Calories

10g of Fat

7g of Saturated Fat

0g of Trans Fat

5mg of Cholesterol

65mg of Sodium

27g of Carbohydrates

0g of Dietary Fibre

20g of Sugar

and 1g of Protein

It does not matter how much you love cookie dough, I’m sure everyone will agree that it is not most nutritional thing you can eat so eating these in small doses is highly recommended.

The company that makes Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites has pasted that the product does not contain egg all over the box, I guess this just to show that this particular candy is safe for vegans too eat as in the list of ingredients they do say that they use milk powder instead of milk from an animal.

DSC_0066

The product its self is an assortment of cookie dough balls covered in milk chocolate they come on various sizes and shapes which is an aspect that I like because it does give me a bit more faith in the product because it makes it seem that it was not just simply made by machines in a factory.

DSC_0067

The milk chocolate is quite flavourless, it does have a very slight chocolate taste to it but in general it honestly just tastes like plastic.

DSC_0068

The cookie dough tastes pretty good but again it does not have much flavour too it, although I will admit that the flavour is much stronger and of better quality compared to the chocolate. The cookie dough has a mixture of salty and sweet flavours and the texture of the cookie dough is quite dry.

My biggest issue with the product is that it’s called Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites and as much as there was cookie dough in bite size pieces I failed to find any chocolate chips, I suppose you could argue that the chocolate covering the cookie dough is the chocolate chip but if that is the case surely the product should be named Milk Chocolate Covered Cookie Dough Bites.

This product was really disappointing it lacked in both chocolate chips and flavour and even though they are quite cheap to purchase I recommend staying away from these. 3/10
