Tomb Raider (1996) Review

Tomb Raider is a 1996 3D platformer-puzzle game developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive. It was released for the Sega Saturn, Playstation 1 and MS DOS. The game was the first release in the popular video game series that sees Tomb Raider Lara Croft solving dungeons to discover treasures.

Relaxing in a Hotel in India, Lara is approached by a texan man named Larson who shows her a video feed to his boss Jaqueline Natla who offers her a job to travel to various countries to seek out the Scion of Atlantis which had been split into separate parts and hidden in tombs across Peru, Greece and Egypt.

The first Tomb Raider game while not limited in it’s environments definitely is forgettable, nothing about these areas stand out much apart from the enemies that you would fight, for example Peru has wolves and bears, Greece has lions and gorillas, Egypt has panthers and Atlantis has bleeding skin demons.

In the game you will have to solve puzzles and commit to some tricky platforming in order to survive the many tombs in the game, unfortunately you would be best playing the game on an original PS1 controller as more modern controllers make the platforming difficult as the game really was made with the Playstation’s original limited controller in mind.

while general control is rather clunky and a little stiff I found that swimming in the game worked really well and controlled smoothly, I believe this is why I enjoyed the underwater segments the most.

For an early PS1 game the graphics are really good and even hold up better than some games released later on in the systems life time, the game focuses primarily on tombs and is actually quite realistic as Lara will die constantly due to small mistakes and the tombs feel like they could exist in real life due to their simplicity by using mainly levers, switches and difficult platforming sections, there is nothing in the game that feels fantasy minus a few additions such as the Lara Doppelganger in Atlantis which is a puzzle in its self.

The soundtrack is great, it uses simple tunes but mixed in with orchestral music that fits perfectly into the lonely tombs and helps to amp up serious moments in what is a very quiet game. The developers decided to not have music playing constantly in the game but to only have it appear on certain cues such as discovering a secret or triggering a boss fight.

Tomb Raider on PS1 is a very important game as it was the introduction of Lara Croft who would go on to become one of video games most famous female icons. I wish the game controlled a little better or at least would save after every challenge as the controls really did make the gameplay unnecessarily difficult, I also wish that the environments were more memorable as apart from Atlantis and the dinosaur section nothing else really stands out. Overall I dont think is one of the best games I have ever played but its far from the worst and I look forward to checking out Tomb Raider 2 in the future.

5.3/10

Final Fantasy VII (1997) Review

Final Fantasy 7 is a JRPG from Square Soft (Square Enix) it was the first game in the series to get a release in PAL regions and before being released on the PS1 it began development for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, later into its developmental cycle it was pushed towards Nintendo 64 however due to the advantages of CD-Rom technology this game was dropped from a Nintendo 64 release making it the first in the series to not get a release on a Nintendo video game system

The game was remade for the PS4 in 2019 however in this review I am purely talking about the original and will review the remake on its own when I get around to playing it.

It is no secret that the plot to this game is insanely complicated so I’m going to try and sum it up the best that I can.

The main party member in the game is Cloud Strife an ex soldier who works with a group of eco terrorists to help save the planet from an evil god like super human named Sephiroth who wants to steal the earths essences.

In the game Cloud meets many characters but the most important and in my opinion best character in the game is a flower girl named Aeris, depending on how you interact with her will determine how Cloud and Aeris’s Relationship grows in the game and her character is so likeable that it makes her final scene even more heart breaking.

I wont into anymore plot details due to spoilers but if you want to watch an excellent video about this game, its influence and the plot then I suggest Clement Remembers Final Fantasy VII, I had no input with the video but it was a great understanding of how special the game really is so please use the links below to watch the video and of course give the creator some love by subscribing to his YouTube Channel.

Channel https://www.youtube.com/user/ClementJ642

Clement Remembers Final Fantasy VII https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_Dq4ysZafU

The main gameplay is nothing new for a JRPG it follows the simple premise of using a world map to run into random battles, visit towns and different areas and drive various vehicles, what this game does do differently is the use of Materia.

Materia are different types of energy that can be collected in the game and assigned into weapon and armour slots, this allows characters to perform different actions including magic casting, commands, summons and other upgrades. I mostly found use in magic and summons but the enemy skill Materia also came in handy. One Important thing to note with magic Materia is the all Materia this when matched with a magic Materia can spread its effects across all enemies or allys instead of just one, this is extremely useful for healing your entire party at once and is one of the most useful Materias in the game.

Its not only battling you can do in the game but with a little exploration you can discover many fun minigames, by far the best is Chocobo racing which is diffciult at first but once you get used to it, it is so much fun, another memorable side game was snowboarding down a mountain which I didn’t enjoy purely because I was terrible at it, apart from this there is an arcade in the game which allows you to play many different types of fun games, it really is a blast and as is an area I often revisit when I want to have a break from the main plot.

In the game Cloud can gather up to eight additional party members which includes two secret characters Vincent and Yuffie who are not necessary for the plot however I recommend grabbing them as they are very good and I actually used them both when taking on the games Final Boss.

The game is so large it’s actually on three disks and took me about 60 hours to finish, because of this as you can imagine the graphics are not amazing but I will say that because of how many different areas are in the game it makes up for it in its variety, there are CGI cut scenes in the game and these are gorgeous and only happen in major plot moments.

The music for the game was composed by Nobuo Uematsu and it is one of the greatest video game soundtracks I have ever had the pleasure of listening too, the music is very atmospheric but a lot of fun in its light hearted moments, the game chooses to not use music at all in certain scenes in order put the focus on very important plot details and that is something that not many games do, its rare that a game will just stop music and the moments Final Fantasy VII chooses to do this are perfect. The best track in the entire game in my opinion is One Winged Angel, it is the only track to my knowledge that uses vocals and this only happens during the true final battle of the game, it gets the player pumped for a very intense fight and it makes sure that you know that this is the moment when you need to truly put everything you learned in the game to the test, the music in this game is absolutely breathtaking and I will never forget it.

I cannot fault Final Fantasy VII because it may be the best JRPG I have ever played, I have not been this invested in a video game in a long time and I cant find much I dislike about the game, it had an amazing yet complicated plot, great characters that are all very likeable in their own ways, had clear objectives and little level grinding was necessary, it allows players to make their own choices which will eventually affect small plot points but will not ruin the main plot and it remains entertaining throughout and not once does it become boring or feel like a chore. If I had to nit pick I would argue that some labelling on the over world map would make navigation a little easier but apart from that this Final Fantasy VII is well worthy of a Final Score of 10/10

Thank you for reading my review of Final Fantasy VII for the PS1

Spyro the Dragon Original Trilogy/Reignited Trilogy Review

Spyro the Dragon was at one time an extremely beloved video game mascot, like Crash Bandicoot at the time Spyro was a name that helped to push the original PlayStation to its immense popularity. The original Spyro the dragon trilogy was three separate PS1 games that were release throughout the systems life, a HD remake of the trilogy was released in 2018 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, a PC and Nintendo Switch version was released in 2019.

In this review we will take a look at the original three games and will then briefly discuss the HD remakes to see if they hold up.

Spyro the Dragon: 1998

ps1-spyro-the-dragon

maxresdefault

During a TV interview the dragons of the Dragon Kingdom catches the attention of Gnasty Gnorc who was recently banished to the Dragons junkyard. During the Interview the dragons call Gnasty simple minded, harmless and ugly which sets him into a rage, he traps all of the dragons in crystal, takes all of the dragons treasures and sends thieves to steal the remaining Dragon Eggs. Spyro was the only dragon that was not crystallised due to his small size leaving him to save the Dragon Kingdom.

hqdefault

In the game players have three main goals, the most important goal in the game is to rescue the dragons. This is the easiest goal but its really satisfying to release the dragons and sometimes they do give you some very useful hints.

8f09d67c3b02966653620ac73bbbea69

The Second goal is to collect the dragons eggs, in some levels you will find these thieves and you need to run after them and attack them to get the eggs back.

Finally every stage has a set number of treasure that you can find in chests, enemies and generally scattered around.

293694-spyro647854-spyro-the-dragon-playstation-screenshot-i-see-stars-ouch

In the game Spyro has two ways to attack enemies, he can either breath fire or ram them, some enemies can only be attacked by one of these and are defensive against the other type so players will need to use strategy to defeat some of the bad guys.

spyro-the-dragon-11-video-games-where-you-play-as-a-dragon

A dragonfly called sparks follows our hero in this game, his purpose is to represent your health, gold is healthy, blue is injured, green is very injured and no dragonfly means one more hit and your dead. You can regenerate health by killing some creatures such as sheep, chickens and lizards to create butterflies for Sparks to eat.

giphy

The boss fights kind of suck in this game, they are all very easy and none of them are really that memorable, the only exception is Toasty because that boss fight is genuinely quite funny and you gotta love him.

maxresdefault (1)

I love that this game has different themed worlds and levels but my biggest issue with the game is that they all feel quite empty even though they have all of the collectables for you to find, none of them look very interesting and all of them are simply forgettable, however this does not mean that the game is not fun because it is really tons of fun even with its rather boring looking levels.

IcyflightThe Flying levels are loved by some and hated by others, they are very frustrating and I feel that Spyro’s flying controls were not yet perfected but I have to say that these are my favourite levels in the game, it is so much fun to try and blast all of the items and go through the rings in the fastest time possible.

I really am not fond of the soundtrack of the first Spyro game, personally I find it boring and not very memorable however I will say that the music suits the environments that it represents quite well its just not a soundtrack for me.

Spyro the Dragon is a good game, its a little lacking in things to do and is very short but it is super fun and collecting is very satisfying and the flying levels are great, I wouldn’t consider it a masterpiece but I think a 7/10 is fair.

Spyro 2 – Ripto’s Rage: 1999

spyro-the-dragon-11-video-games-where-you-play-as-a-dragon

download

Spyro and Sparx want to take a vacation at Dragon Shores, when they enter the portal they do not end up at Dragon Shores but instead the land of Avalar.

Spyro was summoned to Avalar by Hunter the Cheetah, Elora the Faun and a mole professor who want him to save the land from the Evil Warlock Ripto and his two henchman Crush and Gulp, Ripto hates dragons and wants to take over Avalar because it historically has no Dragons, needless to say he is not pleased when Spyro turns up to ruin his chaotic plans.

Spyro-2-Moneybags

With all of the new characters Money Bags is by far the most useful and memorable, hes a greedy rich bear that will sell useful upgrades to levels and Spyro’s abilities. These upgrades can range from creating bridges and elevators in levels and even opening new levels in hub worlds but the best thing you can buy is new abilities for Spyro.

BAZQDn

For me the best ability Moneybags can sell you is diving, now water does not kill Spyro but instead he can dive under the water and seek new gems and pathways. other useful upgrades and climbing ladders and smashing into the ground to destroy certain items and terrain.

The ability to slightly boost in the air when gliding is a useful new ability that is taught the player by Hunter early on in the game.

2WSiDd

1LgS9F

In this game killing enemies does not get you gems but instead you will be awarded a white orb, once you collect a set number of these orbs you will unlock an ability gate. These gates give Spyro super powers for a limited time, examples of these are the super flame, walking on harmful surfaces and ice breath.

Trolley_Mission

When you finish a level you get awarded with a talisman and in the first two hub worlds you need a set number of them to fight the boss, the main goals you want to look out for however are side quests that will bank you a green orb, you need these orbs to unlock doors in the game and during the battle with the final boss. Collecting these orbs is by far the best part of the game, the challenges are a lot of fun and range in difficulty, my favourite was an ice hockey challenge and another memorable challenge was riding a vehicle to collect gears. Collecting all of the gems and orbs in the game will give Spyro a very special and permanent upgrade at the end of the game.

hqdefault

The boss fights in the first game were a little bit boring and all required chasing but here they are much more fun and are a lot more challenging.

Oceanspeedway

Flying levels returned and were just as fun as the last game but they each have one hidden challenge in Spyro 2. After beating the main stage players could return to find a bonus mission that would award them a green orb. These missions are all fun but my favourite was catching the gems from the cat burglars.

I still wasn’t a fan of the soundtrack here but I do not think its a bad soundtrack, again its suits the game perfectly I just don’t think its for me.

Spyro 2 – Ripto’s Rage is a fantastic game and is a wonderful sequel to the first game. I much preferred the mission based structure of the levels and how much personality the developers added to each land with unique characters and lovable cut-scenes. The only odd thing about the game was that there are three hub worlds and each are based on seasons Summer, Autumn and Winter. There is no Spring hub world but the Autumn hub world has twice the amount of stages as the other two so it seems a little weird that a fourth hub world for spring was missing. I’m not going let this affect the games score though as its just nit picky and would be unfair as in reality this game is perfect and nothing is bad about it which makes it an easy 10/10 for me.

Spyro – Year of the Dragon: 2000

Spyro-year_of_the_dragon

spyro-year-of-the-dragon-06

Its the year of the dragon and Spyro and the other dragons are celebrating the event with a collection of new Dragon eggs that are to be hatched, however  a new character named Bianca steals the eggs and takes them back to the new antagonist a female dinosaur who wants too use the baby dragons wings to create a spell that will let her live for eternity.

hqdefault

The gameplay for Spyro is similar to the other games and he keeps all of his abilities from Spyro 2: Riptos Rage, however new styles of minigames allow him to use different types of items and vehicles, the best new gameplay style for Spyro is skateboarding, these sections are really fun and easy to control and perform tricks.

spyro3-67

The flying sections now have three missions each allowing you to win a Dragon Egg, the only new thing in these sections are the races, these are very challenging and really fun once you get the hang of how to get ahead of your opponents.

Spyro-DS3

Money bags will want gems to unlock new paths in the game as well as new playable characters who each have their own sections in the game.

maxresdefault

Sheila the Kangaroo can jump very high and kick enemies to attack.

hqdefault (1)

Sargent Byrd can fly with his jet pack and shoot projectiles.

x240-FP9

Bentley moves slowly but is incredibly strong using his club to wack enemies and hit back projectiles.

PLAYSTATION--Spyro Year of the Dragon _Jul9 22_54_05

Agent 9 uses a gun weapon and bombs to clear out areas of enemies and shoot targets.

maxresdefault (1)

Finally Sparx is playable in birds eye view gunning sections where he needs to blast bugs and find dragon eggs.;

maxresdefault (2)

Mid-bosses mixed in with the main battles was a nice addition in this game, I actually think that these fights were much more memorable and fun than the others, the Twin Dragons was particularly fun but very time consuming and challenging.

Again I really was not fan of the music and this one was the worst in my opinion, I didn’t feel that the music suited the games areas at all and the amount of recycled music did not help, I heard that a different edition of the game was released with more variety in music but I still don’t think I would enjoy it

I really love this game but even with all of the new content and gameplay variations, I felt like something was missing, I think the new characters were all great but I didn’t like all of the back tracking I had to do after rescuing them and I really did not like the Sparx sections as I thought they were extremely boring compared to the rest of the game. However the game was still really fun and getting all of the eggs was challenging and gave you a feeling of satisfaction that I didn’t quite get with the first game, I still prefer Spyro 2 but this one is a close second favourite for me 9/10

81X93DGG6sL._AC_SL1500_

In 2018 we got the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, it was HD remakes of the first three Spyro games, it was developed by Toys for BOB and published by Activision.

spyro_reignited_trilogy_1_1101027

_hero_SQ_Spyro-Reignited-Trilogy-Playstation-4-Game-1-c26ee668326743c2959657c3b99be25e

I think most would agree that these games are the definitive version of Spyro all of them look gorgeous and even the first Spyro which felt a little bare had more details added to the environments, new voice actors also help to make the game feel more immersive, the core gameplay hasn’t really changed between the games, very small updates such as new camera controls, more fluent gameplay and censors such as changing bullets to goo in some sections are the only major differences.

45904724101_3980ed9c71_b

The only thing I don’t like about this collection is that the flying sections seem to have been handled much worse, they are not as smooth as they used to be and this makes some of them unnecessarily stressful and annoying.

I much prefer the new music style used in the reignited trilogy, I found the tracks a lot of fun to listen too and in my opinion I think they are much better then the originals, I know this is not the common opinion but if you prefer the original music you can switch between the two in the options menu.

Overall the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a fantastic package of three wonderful video games, the only downside is the slightly worse flying controls and longer load times, I feel these things could have been polished before release but everything else is much better and the best Spyro experience 9.5/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of The Spyro Original and Reignited Trilogy

Rayman (1995) (Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, PS1, GBA, PC) Review

501886-s_rayman_1

The recent Rayman games Origins and Legends have gotten a lot of praise since they have been released and they are very popular among both old and new fans of the series, I recently ordered a copy of Rayman 2 and I’m still waiting on that to arrive and while I am waiting I figured it would be a good idea to revisit the original game and too see if it still holds up today.

316px-R1Intro_004

Rayman has a fairly simple plot, Mr Dark steals a ball of energy called the Great Protoon, due to the Great Protoon being taken away smaller balls of energy called the Electoons are scattered across the land and are stuffed into cages by Mr Dark’s minions, a local magician calls upon Rayman to find and rescue all of the Electoons and to defeat Mr Dark returning the Great Protoon back to its resting place.

s_Rayman_2

Rayman is an action/adventure platformer with a twist, your job is not too simply get to the end of each stage but too also find and rescue six Electoons in every level.

images

This may seem like a farily easy task but I guarantee that this will be one of the most difficult games you have ever played, Rayman has no mercy not only are the majority of the cages hidden in ridiculous locations but most of them require you to find small sparks in order to make the cages appear and these sparks are very easy to miss due to their small size, for example one stage requires the player to jump off a cliff to a cloud below, they then need to crawl under a small spike covered roof and then fight a rock troll only to be brought to a dead end, the player will need to walk to the left wall and look up they will then see the spark which they must jump up to grab, they now need to back track to the top of the cliff where the cage will be waiting.

Fleurtentaculecrache

Not only is getting the cages difficult but the general game play will also provide quite a challenge, the world that surrounds Rayman may seem innocent but almost everything is out to kill you, Mr Dark’s Minions are not too dangerous as most of the time they can be taken out with a couple of punches, the biggest threat is the environment I tended to be killed the most by pitfalls and spikes as this is a very difficult platformer which requires precise jumps and good reflexes in order for you too survive.

BetillaTelescopicFist

But fear not as a fairy called Betilla will help Rayman through out his quest by occasionally giving him new powers.

  • Telescopic fist: This ability allows Rayman to attack his enemies by literally throwing his fist.
  • Hanging: This ability allows Rayman to hang off of ledges, this is very useful for helping rayman reach far platforms as well as avoiding enemy attacks
  • Grappling Fist: This ability allows Rayman to swing from these floating pink and red rings, some sections of the game require this ability to complete
  • Helicopter: This ability allows Rayman to hover temporarily
  • Running: This ability allows Rayman to sprint

raymoskito4

Rayman does have its fair share of Boss fights, all of these battles are very creative and each is unique in how it attacks and how it can be defeated, my favorite battle is against the Mosquito in world 1.

With a game as difficult as this tight and responsive controls are extremely important, luckily Rayman’s controls are perfect, the game runs smoothly with responsive controls so if you die it will always be your fault no matter how difficult the game gets.

Graphically the game looks outstanding, the game goes for a cartoon style look and it really pays off, it suits the silly atmosphere of the game perfectly some of the finer details really help the game feel more realistic than it needs too which is a nice touch, while playing you will notice plants blowing in the wind and when Rayman steps on a light platform you can see the effect that his weight has on those platforms, these days such small details may not seem too special but for a game that came out over 20 years ago this is very impressive.

Even more impressive is the games soundtrack, this is in my opinion the best part of the game and its definitely what I look forward too the most when I play, you can sense the amount of love that went into every track in the game, almost every world uses a different music style to help fit the atmosphere from the charming and happy music of the first world all the way to the rock and roll soundtrack that accompanies the final boss all of it is amazing.

Listen to its glory right here

The original Rayman is one of the greatest games ever made, sure its hard and it can be a real pain in the butt especially when it comes to collecting all of the cages, but with all that aside you still have a fantastic platformer and if collecting the cages is putting you off playing the game then I recommend you use the cheat to unlock em all because honestly that’s what I usually do as I hate collecting the cages and some of them are just too hard to find which is the games only real flaw.

Different Versions of the game obviously do have some big differences due to console restrictions but if you want to play the game in all its glory I recommend either you pick it up on PS1, PSN or PC, some of the handheld versions of the game are very restrictive but the best version in opinion is the GBA port (Rayman Advance), its lacking in the awesome soundtrack, and a few levels are completely missing but apart from that everything is essentially the same and I recommend picking it up as its quite cheap.

Rayman still holds up today and is still mostly a fantastic game the only problem is how cryptic getting some of the cages can be, other than that this is a game I highly recommend

8.6/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of Rayman

Metal Gear Solid (PS1) Review

First of all a big thank you to Martin for sending us this game, Martin never gave us his last name when he sent us the game, but if your reading this Martin and you want to email me your last name to zeroslayer911@gmail.com I will be more than happy to edit the blog and put your last name in this review.

Now with all the thank you’s out of the way lets talk about Metal Gear Solid

Game Case
Game Case

I had never played Metal Gear Solid until a few months back, yeah ok you can shoot me.

This is because from what I saw in game magazines and snippets of game footage I thought Metal Gear Solid was just your average shooter. But oh boy was I wrong because Metal Gear Solid is one of the most well directed video games I have ever played. Everything about the game is so well made and pieced together its like that sweater your nan knits you every Christmas.

Your probably wondering what the game is about well I am going to describe the plot to the best of my abilities,
you take the role of Solid Snake fans of the original metal gear games know who I am talking about

Solid Snake

Solid Snake is a stealth agent on a mission to stop a nuclear weapon (Metal Gear) from destroying the earth, upon being briefed on the situation by Colonel Roy Campbell a former friend of Snake and retired fox hound member, he sends Snake into the enemy base to find and rescue The DARPA (The Defence Advanced Research Project Agency) Chief and the Armstech President, After finding the Darpa Chief in a jail cell, Snake questions if he gave Fox Hound the Password or not, The chief explains that Fox Hound Member Psycho Mantis has the ability to read minds and got the password from the chief by reading his mind. The Darpa Chief then appears to die from a heart attack, the same happens to the Arms Tech President after snake rescues him after Snake defeats another Fox Hound member called Revolver Ocelot with the help of a mysterious ninja. Before he dies the President explains to Snake that it is not heart attack that he is suffering from but that it is the effects of something called Foxdie. After discovering the truth behind these mysterious deaths and learning that the President also gave Fox Hound his password Snake calls Colonel Campbell and explains the situation. Snake is then told to call the Chiefs Niece Meryl, getting her codec is one of the ways the game breaks the fourth wall by making the player check the back of CD case to get her codec code. Snakes mission now is to defeat all of the remaining members of Fox Hound and to find a way to stop the nuclear weapon from striking the earth.

Metal_Gear_Solid_ back of CD Case

That’s a brief explanation of the plot, if talked about the whole plot I would giving away too many spoilers and also I would be writing for decades as the plot is very in depth. The plot gets really good towards the end of the game when in delves into Snakes past and the reason for his existence.

Another great aspect to this game is the music, Metal Gear Solid has a beautifully well orchestrated sound track, the music that plays when the Konami logo is Presented, is an extract from a previous game called police Nauts the track is called End of the Dark. Police Nauts is a previous game from metal gear creator Hideo Kojima. Like I said the music in Metal Gear Solid is amazing and it really suits the game and its atmosphere very well

This is an example of some music from Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid Opening Theme

Speaking of Audio the voice acting in Metal Gear Solid is amazing, the English dub of the original Japanese Voice acting is so well done that it honestly makes the game feel like an intense action movie. The voice acting can be heard countless times in the game but it is mostly through codec calls, the codec is what Solid Snake uses to contact his comrades for advice.

The codec calls are also what adds alot of really funny comedy to the game for example later on in the game when you follow Meryl into the ladies bathroom if you get into the bathroom before Meryl and call Mei Ling she calls you pervert and wont allow you to save your game for the rest of the mission.

By far my favourite part of the game is the boss fights, they are very creative and really make the player have to think to figure out the best methods of taking the bosses out. Here are a few of my personal favourites.

Revolver Ocelot

Revolver Ocelot

A well known boss in the MGS franchise, he’s a crack shot with his revolver and a hell of a lot of fun to fight

Sniper Wolf

Sniper wolf

A killer with a love of animals, I love this boss because out of all of the bosses after killing her and hearing her life story, I truly understood why she is killer and what drove her to be the way she is

Vulcan Raven (Second Encounter)

Vulcan Raven

Not so fond of his first encounter but the second time you fight him, he is really challenging but also really fun, also this boss fight is a really good opportunity to use the missile launcher my second favourite weapon in the game, my first being Snakes bare hands

Favourite boss in the game (Psycho Mantis)

Phycho Mantis

This guy is awesome he is so much fun to fight, the game breaks the fourth wall twice in this boss fight, once when Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and talks about previous Konami titles you’ve played and the second time I wont ruin for you as it is needed in order to beat Psycho Mantis but I promise you wont be disappointed.

Final Verdict

Metal Gear Solid is one of the best games I have ever played and currently my favourite PS1 game of all time. It never gets boring I have personally beaten the game a few times now and every time the plot is still very interesting and really makes me want to help Snake save the world. My only minor complaint is that if you skipped all of the cut scenes and codec calls the game is only two to three hours long, but unless your a speed runner you probably wont skip any cut scenes so this wont be much of a problem. I rate Metal Gear Solid a Solid 10/10. A fantastic game which really shows the ability video games have on the media and just how good video games can be, all hail Kojima.

On a final note the game has two endings, during the torture scene if you resist the torture you will get the Good Ending and if you submit you will get the not so good ending but a Comical ending with a reference to 2001 a space odyssey. THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME!!! Highly Recommend it.

Hope you enjoyed this review, if you respect my opinion I will respect yours

Rugrats Studio Tour (PS1) Review

Back in my youth I had a slight obsession with the Rugrats I used to own all of the videos and I had posters all over my room, I also remember owning quite a few Rugrats video games which as a kid they were amazing but when I come back to most of them as an Adult I seem to find issues which I never noticed before, on the bright side a few of them still remain to be pretty fun and one of those fun games is Rugrats Studio Tour for the Playstation 1.

Story

Tommy, Dil, Chuckie, Phil, lil, Angelica and Susie are all going on a movie studio tour but while they are there the Rugrats get up to their usual antics and they wander off by themselves, In the process of them leaving the grown-ups they lose Dil and he gets locked behind a door and the security guard loses the keys it doesn’t help that Dil took them off of him before he got locked in. The Rugrats want to get Dil back so they go around the movie studio to find keys that will fit in the door so that they can save Baby Dil.

Game play

So the babies venture off on their adventure through the movie studio to save Dil luckily while you a controlling the characters the controls are not too bad their not perfect though I do personally find them be a little bit loose but let that put you off playing this game. While playing through the game you will have to play as each of the characters which each have their owned themed world.

Phil and Lil- Diapers of thunder

Diapers of thunder is a race car themed world all of the levels consist of kart races this is one of my favorite worlds because its sort of like a crappy version of Mario Kart  instead of mushrooms, turtle shells and banana peels get ready to use baby bottles, eat cookies and throw diapers.

Angelica- Captain Cookies

Pirate Themed world

Treasure hunt scenes- Collect a specific amount of Reptar bars or you may have to open a big chest, don’t forget to avoid the evil Crab and the evil Clown Dolls

Treasure collecting scenes- Play as Angelica, Tommy, Chuckie and Tommy in these areas and collect as much treasure as you can before the timer runs out

Pirate Golf Scene-To win you must pot under par or on par you can also win keys by collecting a certain number of Reptar bars you play as all of the Rugrats in this area

Footrace scene- This the same as the Phil and Lil levels only difference is Angelica is on foot to get the key come first place.

Tag scene- Simply a game of tag, tag all of the babies to win a key

Susie- Lazy Saddles

Western Themed World

Gold Mine Scenes- To win keys the player must collect Reptar bars or collect all of the gold in the Level, There is a time limit in each area you can play as Tommy, Susie and Chucky

Round up Scenes- The player must round up all of the animals within a time limit to win keys in this area you can play as Susie, Angelica, Chuckie and Spike (Tommy’s Pet dog)

Western Golf Scenes- Same as the Pirate version just western themed either score par or below/ collect a certain number of Reptar bars to win keys

Milk Squirting Scenes- Get ready aim and fire milk at moving targets to win keys, I find the game hard to control when doing this as the controls feel all stiff for some reason.

Chuckie- outside Space (Pretty creative name right there)

A space themed world

Loonie Lander Scenes- What the hell is a loonie lander? That’s what my first thoughts were when I heard the name of this scene out turns out it some sort of alien hover craft damn I was hoping for something more awesome. Drive around and collect all of the aliens to win keys in this area you play as Chuckie, Tommy, Lil and Angelica

Zero Gees Scenes- Aliens have taken over your spacecraft. Escape to win a Key or by collecting Reptar Bars. Play as Chuckie, Phil and Susie

Lazy Beam Scenes Beam Scenes to win a key you must shoot lasers at targets this is similar to the milk squirting games

Tommy- Once you collect enough keys you can enter the final place where you will have to finish 2 games before you can find Dil.

Shirley Lock Holmes- There are two parts to this level in Part 1 you must play as angelica and find 4 keys which you can use to open the big door and in Part 2 you must climb a huge bookcase to find Dil too bad he enters another scene

Okey Dokey Jones- Play as Tommy and Follow the paths to find Dil

Reptar Scene- Reptar is a big green Dinosaur and for some reason he is pretty pissed at the Babies because he wants to eat them I guess its revenge for eating all the Reptar bars. Drive the Reptar Wagon and escape his evil clutches

Graphics

For a Ps1 game I have got to admit I am impressed, the graphics could have been improved when comparing to games such as Metal Gear but come on its Rugrats there is not exactly such a hype for Rugrats games and trust me compared to a lot of other Rugrats games the graphics are at least nice enough to not make you want to throw up so yeah well done game.

Music

Now the music I’m not so impressed with, ok I will admit the music is not terrible I just find it to be a little bit basic compared to other PS1 games, I understand that there may not have been a big budget for the making of this game and I guess since there was no computer software back then to electronically make the music it’s not too bad it just could be better in my opinion.

Final Verdict

I never thought I would say this about a Rugrats game but this one is worth buying, the controls may feel a little stiff and loose in some parts and the music isn’t brilliant but the overall game play is fun and that’s one of the most important factors to a video game so if you have a PS1 I recommend giving this game ago especially if you have kids. I am going to rate Rugrats Studio Tour a 7/10 because it may not be perfect but it sure is pretty damn good

I hope you enjoyed this review of Rugrats Studio Tour this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.
