Scooby-Doo, Where are you!(1969-1970) Review

Scooby-Doo, Where are you! is an animated series about four teenagers and a great dane that work together to solve spooky mysteries.

The show was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and it was directed by Joseph Barbera and William Hanna.

The show starred five primary characters Shaggy a hippie, Velma a brainac, Daphnie a pretty girl with red hair that often needed rescuing, Fred a jock and the natural leader of the group, Fred also drives the gangs vehicle the mystery machine and finally Scooby-Doo a silly, loyal and cowardly great dane.

Great characters need a good voice cast and luckily the casting here was perfect – unfortunately a lot of the original voice actors have now passed away but their legacy will always live on.

scooby-doo

Im not going to review every episode of the show as they are all very similar in premise and follow the same formula which is.

A paranormal monster is scaring away locals.

The Mystery Gang find a clue and decide to solve the mystery.

Mystery gang speak to someone who has seen the monster

Gang splits up and searches for clues

Shaggy and Scooby do something comedic

A gang member finds a clue which shows that the paranormal monster is not real

The gang sets a trap and catches the monster

Velma explains how they caught the monster to the authorities

Fred removes the mask and discovers its the person they spoke to earlier.

A simple formula but very effective, but this formula would not have been as great with out some outstanding monster designs and Scooby-Doo, Where Are you! had lots of great monsters. Below are some of my favourites.

The Puppet Master

Spooky Space Kook

Compared to later versions of Scooby-Doo some of the visuals in this version are actually quite scary, especially some of the monsters, The Space Kook is particularly terrifying which is one of the reasons why its one of my favourite Scooby-Doo baddies.

The shows iconic theme song didn’t actually start until the second season which is something I didn’t realise until I re-watched the series ready for this review.

The second season also introduced some original music that played during chase sequences, this is something that becomes a series staple in some future versions of the show.

For its two season run Scooby-Doo, Where are you was an outstanding start to what would eventually become a massive franchise that is still relevant to this day and while its comedy and some of its dialogue may feel a little outdated now it still manages to withhold its charm and overall likeability making this a show that has really stood the test of time.

There was a revival third season that was released in 1978 however I will cover this in a future Scooby-Doo Review

I hope you enjoyed this review of Scooby-Doo, Where are you!

Cartoon Dogs

Cartoon dogs

Cartoon human beings are better than real life human beings because well you know there cartoons and they are in kick ass TV shows like Adventure Time and Pokémon, but do you know what’s better than cartoon humans, cartoon dogs why you may ask well you know there dogs and dogs are cool. We all have a favorite animated dog from our childhood but today I’m going to talk about the three which I grew up with and loved as a child.

Scooby Doo

Scooby Doo in a blog about Cartoon dogs is a no brainer. What makes Scooby Doo so great he’s the Sherlock Holmes of the Animal Kingdom I guess you could call him Sherlock Bones I’m sorry that joke was terrible. Scooby Doo has a really funny personality like his need to eat all the time I blame Shaggy that guy is totally a pot smoker, Scooby also is a pussy cat at heart since he scares easily and when he does get scared he jumps into Shaggy’s arms and cuddles up to him it quite adorable when you think about it. Did I mention Scooby Doo can talk yep that’s right and the gang (Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy) all understand him they don’t think this is weird or anything you know because all dogs can talk. I don’t think Scooby can talk at all I just think they are constantly high on shrooms think about it they run around the town chasing people dressed as ghosts, they have intellect conversations with a dog, Both Shaggy and Scooby constantly need to eat and the entire gang drive around in hippy van if that’s not drugs for you then I don’t know what is

Muttley

Image

Muttley made his first appearance in 1968 in a well known show called the Wacky Races he played the role of a side kick for the shows idiotic villain Dick Dastardly. Most people know Muttley from the Wacky Races but he was also in other Hannah Barbara shows such as Dastardly and Muttley in Their flying Machines in this show Muttley earned Many Medals and wanted more from Dick Dastardly from following his commands. I personally know Muttley from the Wacky Races and you wanna know what makes him so great, his laugh Muttley’s laugh is brilliant check this out.

Snoopy

I love Snoopy even though I don’t know much about him apart from he’s Charlie Browns pet dog, he writes a book and he has a small bird called Woodstock (Named after the popular festival back then). So you’re probably wondering why snoopy is on this list if I don’t know all that much about his character, to be honest I just love Snoopy I read the original comics and I still watch the old TV series I don’t know much about him but he’s a lovable character none the less and as a kid I loved him more than both Scooby Doo and Muttley and that has earned Snoopy a place in this blog. If you really want to know more about who Snoopy is this how his creator explains him

The wildly imaginative, supremely confident, world-famous beagle is a canine master of disguise. As Joe Cool, he’s aloof, unflappable, above the fray, the hip dog we’d all like to be. As the World War I Flying Ace, he engages in aerial combat with the notorious Red Baron. While pondering life from the top of his doghouse, he writes the great American novel, travels to the moon, and plots revenge on the cat next door.
