The Last of Us Part 2 (2020) Review

The Last of Us Part 2 is the sequel to the excellent 2013 hit The Last of Us, the game was developed by series creator Naughty Dog and was published exclusively by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4.

The game this time focuses on two main characters Ashley Johnson reprises her role as Ellie and Laura Bailey was brought in to play Abby.

Ellie’s main goal in the game is to kill Abby after she kills Joel by beating him over the head with a golf club, the reason for killing Joel is revealed later on in the game and is a plot point I will not spoil here. Joels brother Tommy heads to Seattle on a Solo mission to hunt down his brothers killer, Ellie and her new girlfriend Dina leave to find Tommy and help him get revenge for Joels death.

Abby is playable in the second half of the game, her journey takes Abby to try and rediscover the purpose in her life after she kills Joel. Her reasons for the the violent way that Joel died are revealed during these chapters along with showing us her relationship with boyfriend Owen and pregnant friend Mel.

Purpose is a theme played with heavily throughout the game and both playable protagonists have to try and get to grips with what is important in life. Revenge is something which effects both characters Ellie is desperate to kill Abby hoping that it will heal her pain from losing Joel, she is so hell bent on this fact that she is blind to the world around her.

Abby is having the exact opposite problem she has killed the person she was after but she is still pained, she realises that her emotions are not going to heal, everything will never be ok again so she is desperate to try and make the most of what she can, later on in the game she even teams up with an enemy of her group and has to choose which path she wants to follow.

Ellie is painted very differently in this game compared to the first and thanks to the excellent writing by Naughty Dog you will be rooting for her in the beginning and later on realising that Ellie is very slowly becoming dangerous, I never knew how the story was going to affect me, at first I hated Abby but by the end of the game I was disagreeing with Ellie and having more sympathy with the person she was trying to kill.

For reasons I don’t particularly understand Ellie’s blood can no longer be used to save humanity so for the most part she isn’t under the danger of being experimented on and is spared multiple times in the game because of this, I wish they explained how its different in this game compared to before but maybe that is something we will discover when the TLOU 3 eventually comes out.

The gameplay follows on from the prior title with its survival horror and moments which require stealth, compared to the first game though I would argue that there are much less infected to deal with compared to human enemies, this of course ties into the main themes and story of the game, there is a big conflict happening here between former firefly’s now known as the WLF (Washington Liberation Front) and the Seraphites a religious cult who want humanity to live off the land and get rid of technology after teachings from their prophet stated that the fungal virus was only brought upon humanity as a punishment for all of its sins.

A new dodge mechanic was added into this game and was extremely helpful during combat especially with the infected, it made the combat a little easier at times without taking away from the games overall difficulty.

Both Ellie and Abby are able to upgrade weapons at workbenches, this will allow for faster reloading, scopes, more penetrating shots and much more.

Skill paths can be purchased with medication, these will allow you to gain new skills based on different play styles focusing on health, explosives, firearms, field tactics, endurance etc.

Collectibles are a massive part of the game this time around with even more things to collect and unique items which tie to both of our playable protagonists.

Ellie is able to find collectible playing cards of people with special powers similar to the X-Men and what I am assuming inspired these. She can also find notes and write down entries in her journal.

Something very cool Ellie can do is play the guitar and while some songs are played as part of the story, if you try out different combinations you can actually play a catalogue of songs from artists such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Metallica and more.

Apart from notes the only other collectible Abby can find are coins each representing different states in America, these were fun to hunt down but its hard not be a little disappointed compared to how much effort was put into Ellie’s half of the game.

A creative choice I would have made is to still have the two campaigns but mix them in together, one chapter of Ellie then one chapter of Abby and so on.

Visually the game is extremely impressive graphically it is one of the best looking games on the system. There has been a big upgrade compared to the first game with Naughty Dog using techniques such as motion matching and advanced light sourcing technology to make the game run smoothly in 1080p and 4K, the game now has new environments to work with, there are still depressing, dark and abandoned areas to explore but also more uplifting and less intense places more prominently seen in flashbacks and my favourite chapter “The Farm”.

Naughty Dog do a fantastic job with making sure that the graphics do not disappoint from start to end with realistic particle rendering of small details such as realistic uses of dust or dirt particles, the realistic movements of flames, and the almost life like visuals of the infected and fungus makes this one of the best looking games for the PS4 and to be honest I think it could even be pulled off on PS5 while it is still in its early lifespan.

Music has a more prominent role in this game compared to the first, In my review of the original game I spoke about how music tracks are few and far between with a higher focus on immersive gameplay. Here we can say the same thing but in a brilliant move by Naughty Dog Joel gifts Ellie her guitar, because of this we can now have these wonderful and emotional renditions of real world songs which not only have a meaning that ties to Ellie’s story but they added more music without taking away from the immersive gameplay as players still feel isolated and lost in this rather depressing chapter in the Last of Us franchise.

I held off from playing this game for a long time, its no secret that a lot of people were disappointed with the game for various reasons including Joels Death, how we are supposed to feel a connection with Abby and some sad saps had a problem with LGBTQ in the game as Ellie and Dina are in a lesbian relationship.

I am pleased to say that I had none of these issues, at first I was upset with Joels death but after the story unfolded I began to understand why Abby wanted him dead and yes I began to feel bad for her, I felt a connection with both and it gave me conflicted feelings I didn’t know who’s side to be on and by the end of the game I was secretly praying that the two could just be civil so I didn’t have to witness either of them die.

The gameplay is addictive, the story will have you on edge of seat and the morals and narratives will have you wondering who the real hero is, you will question many moments and may even see certain characters in a different light, but to truly know how the Last of Us Part 2will affect you is by playing it yourself and that is something I recommend as just like its predecessor this is well worthy of a clean 10/10

ICO (2001) Review

Developed by Japan Studio and Team ICO, this game while it now holds a cult following did not meet sales expectations upon its original release, it would later go on to inspire the vast superior Shadow of the Colossus and one of my personal favourite games. I never had a chance to check this one out until recently and I was curious to see what I missed out on.

A young boy with horns is slowly dragged into a deserted castle high on the cliffs to be sacrificed to the Shadow Queen, for centuries children who grow horns have been locked away here and left to starve to death but luckily for Ico he manages to escape from his tomb and with the help of Yorda a Princess of light and they both work together to escape the castle and its labyrinth inspired walls.

The game is unusual for its lack of conventional video game design it has very little focus on combat and player deaths are few and far between, the main aspect is puzzle solving where you need to interact with the castles mechanical engineering, blow open doors and pull levers in order to adjust areas that Yorda is able to climb and to allow her to traverse along the same paths as the much braver Ico.

Yorda is able to use her light to open otherwise inaccessible doors and pathways so keeping her safe is a must, at set moments in the story shadow creatures will grab the Princess and drag her into the darkness, if this happens Ico will turn to stone and die instantly.

These creatures can be defeated by hitting them with a stick or even better a sword, another way is to simply grab Yordas hand and run to a nearby light blocked door, this will kill all shadows in the area but the likely hood of a door even being available is rare and this can only be done in select moments during the story.

Yorda moves very slowly throughout the game which can be frustrating at times, I spent the majority of my playthrough holding her hand so she was forced to run but this can only be done on ground and near the very end of the game due to a story progression it becomes near impossible to run with her as she will keep tripping over.

In essence the best way I can describe the gameplay is that it is almost like a giant Zelda Dungeon with much easier combat and some ways easier puzzle solutions but difficulty is not what the developers had in mind while creating this game.

This is more of an interactive story than it is a action-adventure game as some may call this, the game is pretty easy including its final boss fight, without a health bar or a heads up display dying seems to be less important as Ico doesnt seem to have much of a threat, in fact to my knowledge the shadows can cant hurt him and only really go for Yorda, he can be taken out with basic platforming mistakes but thats about it.

I think this works in the games favour as it makes it stand out and to be honest I think if they did focus more on this being more than an interactive story the game would have had much less of an impact because it wouldn’t hold a candle to other Action-Adventure games of the time.

Graphically the game is very impressive for an early PS2 title and it has a great use of darkness and basic design to help emphasise the eerie sense of being lost in the castle halls, the few outside meadow areas which are safe from the shadows are much more relaxing in design and its rendering of the castle from such a height for example from the top of cliffs to the waters below would have taken a lot of development work in the PS2’s early stages.

Ico’s soundtrack is very limited which works well with the basic game play level design and narrative while traversing the castle and its many yards you will be lucky to find any music which adds to the lonely and rather empty atmosphere of Ico and Yordas journey and any music we do get is basic so it doesn’t take away from the narrative that is being told, a genius decision from composer  Michiru Oshima and is something I would like to see inspiring more games in the future.

Ico is a fantastic game and for what it was aiming to achieve it did a fantastic job of giving us an all around simple game with its story, gameplay and soundtrack but while this is outstanding in many ways and I do truly love the game its simplicity also leads to its biggest downfall.

The game is very short coming in at around 6 and a half hours for a first playthrough, there isnt even any collectibles or much replay value apart from maybe aiming faster completion times which may seem like nit picking for a game that is now 22 years old but we wouldn’t take kindly to a new PS5 game selling at full price and being this short with no side content so why should a PS2 game from 2001 get the exception bearing in mind people would have paid out the nose if they pre-ordered this back then.

Overall Ico is a game well worth playing, at the moment it is included as part of Playstations Classic catalogue and if you are subscribed to the service I recommend giving it a go

8.5/10

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001) Review

220px-Jak_and_Daxter_-_The_Precursor_Legacy_Coverart

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is an open world plat-former, it was developed by Naughty Dog and was published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2.

hqdefault

Jak an adventurous young boy and his best friend Daxter are spying on a private operation on the misty island, they discover that two dark figures are commanding lurkers to harvest Dark Eco and Precursor Artefacts, before the boys can leave the island to inform the sage Samos of their discovery they are both spotted by a lurker guard which Jak manages to kill with a bomb.

JswZtB

Unfortunately the explosion caused Daxter to fall into a large body of Dark Eco which turned him into ottsel (half weasel and half otter) after returning to the sage the boys are told that only the dark sage Gol Acheron can turn Daxter back into a human leaving the boys no choice but to journey into the dangerous world to find him.

jak8

The main game play is a collectathon so there is a lot of things to find, the main collectable are power cells there are 101 in game and you can get some by completing tasks and purchasing them with precursor orbs the most satisfying collectable in the game. Precursor Orbs are egg shaped and are spread throughout levels, each stage has between 50 and 200 of these and finding them all can be very challenging  and at times infuriating due to how spread out they can be, sometimes they are hidden in really unnecessary places.

Locked_box

The final collectable in the game are scout flies, these are small flies that are trapped in red boxes hidden within levels, there are seven in each stage and collecting a stages flies will reward the player with another power cell.

jak-daxter-the-precursor-legacy-screen-08-ps4-us-22aug17

Throughout your adventure you will encounter many different enemies that you will have to defeat, luckily Jak has many moves that he can use in the game, this includes punching, spin kicking and a slam move.

maxresdefault

There are three types of energy you can collect in the game, the blue energy allows you to move very quickly and can also activate certain items, the yellow energy allows the player to shoot a projectile at enemies and the red energy gives the player higher strength all of these are only temporary so must be used quickly.

3

There are some vehicle sections in the game which are all very fun but I would argue that when you are collecting things during these sections its not very well designed due to the vehicles being a little too fast and the way the items are spread out makes it hard to collect them with out dying due to some of these areas being timed such as the lava sections.

large

There are some mini games hidden within the main game and these are all ok and have a fair and balanced difficulty but they are my least favourite part of the game as I do feel they don’t really fit here.

The soundtrack definitely has inspiration from Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot games and is in a very similar style however its not as good here and while the music is a lot of fun to listen too none it is very memorable, I cant recall any of the music from the game but it is still quite good.

Jak and Daxter the Precursor Legacy was the beginning of Naughty Dogs new journey after the masterful Crash Bandicoot games on the PS1, this game is a fantastic start on what would become an extremely beloved franchise. I think this game is great and it has a lot of memorable characters with great personalities and while this game is a little flawed with the way items can be spread out and a fairly forgetful soundtrack it makes up for it with outstanding visuals, smooth game play and very few load screens, the game is very satisfying to play and never gets boring 8.9/10

Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception (2011) Review

81efDMCaMoL._AC_SX385_

Released in 2011 and Developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 3, Drakes Deception is the third game in the Uncharted video game series.

london-deal-cutter-drake-2-1280x720

In a London bar Nathan Drake and his partner Victor Sullivan are meeting with a man named Talbot who wants to Purchase the ring that Nate carries around his neck due to it once belonging to Sir Francis Drake. After a quick fight we are introduced to the games man antagonist Katherine Marlowe, Marlowe wants Nate’s ring to help her discover the Atlantis of the Sands a long lost city filled with un-measurable wealth, after realising Marlowe’s plan, Nate, Sully, Chloe and their new friend Charlie try to find the city before Marlowe and her crooks.

maxresdefault

Very similar to its predecessor the best part of the game is exploring the various locations and the action based game-play, with a few tougher and more dangerous enemies thrown into the mix this time uncharted 3 is by far much more difficult but a lot more satisfying to finish.

maxresdefault (1)

The puzzles are great here and are some of the best we have seen in the series so far, I really enjoyed the variety of puzzles available, all of them were very challenging and cleverly designed to have you scratching your head in frustration but still be fun. My favourite puzzle took place in a car garage and had players trying to discover a secret passageway.

43048242681_8891485978_b

There was one chapter in this game that stood out compared to rest and that was because it was a flashback where we played as a much younger Nathan Drake, the chapter helped introduce us to the back story of the games plot and villain but also showed how Drake and Sully first met, it was really cool and I would love to see a game that covered more of Drakes past in a future release.

Greg Edmonson was brought back to compose the soundtrack of Uncharted 3 and this is definitely the best soundtrack out of the original PlayStation 3 trilogy. The first two games had outstanding music as well but something about the music here is really special it not only captured the atmosphere and story progression perfectly but it was genuinely more memorable and overall fantastic.

Even though this is an excellent game I would argue that it is the least interesting out of them all and while its graphics and visuals are stunning and its soundtrack phenomenal it lacks in a very compelling story and I feel it has far too many new characters who with the exception of Marlowe are not very interesting. Overall a very good game just not as great as its predecessors.

7.5/10

The Last of us (2013) Review

Video_Game_Cover_-_The_Last_of_Us

The Last of us is a action-survival game that was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony for their Playstation 3 video game system, the game was also remastered for Playstation 4 however I am purely basing this review on the original version of the game.

6qdmw4

The last of us begins with a man and his daughter trying to survive in the United States after an outbreak of a dangerous mutant disease is infecting people, Joel (the main protagonist of the game ) grabs his daughter Sarah and attempts to flee along his brother Tommy, unfortunately they are spotted by military who end up shooting Sarah who passes away.

obZWqv (1)

20 years later and Joel is working as an illegal smuggler, him and his partner Tess take out a arms dealer to retrieve a stolen weapons cache, the dealer doesn’t have the cache anymore and explains that he traded it with the fireflies, this then leads to Joel and Tess meeting Marlene the fireflies leader who offers to give them double the weapons cache if they can transport a 14 year old girl named Ellie to other Fireflies, Ellie is immune to the disease and she may hold the cure. This is the main goal of the game and is where it really starts to get good.

The_Last_of_Us_Listen_Mode

For best chance of survival you want to try and sneak past enemies if you can, this will save ammunition which is limited in the game and because Joel and Ellie take damage very easily you will want avoid as much confrontation as possible, the game uses a crafting system to make weapons such as shivs and Molotov’s out of materials you find, you can make health kits as well but the materials to make these things are also quite limited and you will want to craft wisely making sure not to only craft one item.

Discovering where enemies are is made easy using Joel’s listening ability, doing this allows the players to see where close enemies are at all time even if they are not in the same room or are hidden behind walls.

e29a5696307762298148eb73031c7dd5-1200-80

Out of all of the weapons in the game, the most useful is by far the bow and arrow, its the only weapon that is silent, its really helpful to take out enemies silently without others hearing what happened, you can even get some of your arrows back providing they didn’t break on impact.

maxresdefault (1)

The game looks beautiful and the environments while mostly quite depressing are full of details that you will want to take in. the forest is my favourite area in the game because of this.

The soundtrack of the game is nothing spectacular although it is very good, the music only appears in certain moments as the game wants to be as immersive of an experience as possible and it does do this extremely well, and sparing the music really helped to make the game as fantastic of an experience as it was.

The Last of Us is one if the best video games I have ever played, it is a really interesting game because it feels more like an interactive movie than a game, it does have game-play but its biggest focus is the cut-scenes which tell the story, these cut-scenes are really deep in character development and are truly amazing. Overall I really love this game it has a lot of collectables that are difficult to find and one day I will go back and collect them all but if you haven’t played this then you are missing out on one of the best PlayStation exclusives of all time 10/10.

I hope you enjoyed this review of The Last of Us

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009) Review

61bfoo-Z9cL

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the second game in the Uncharted video game series. It was developed by Naughty Dog and was published by Sony for the Playstation 3.

20180627_124032

Set two years after the events of Drakes Fortune, Uncharted 2 begins with Nathan Drake brutally injured on a train carriage that is hanging over an icy cliff.

s9FmAh

After the beginning level of the game, a flash back explains the main plot and this is where things start to get really interesting.

In the flashback Drake is visited by an old friend and former treasure hunter Harry Flynn along with his Girlfriend Chloe Frazer.

Drake and Flynn break into a museum to steal a Mongolian oil lamp that once belonged to Marco Polo, they find a map inside of the lamp that illuminates a message explaining that a ship was shipwrecked in Borneo that was carrying a large sapphire called a Cintimani Stone. Unfortunately Flynn turns on drake and gets Drake arrested, three months later Drake is bailed out of prison by Sully and an adventure to find the Cintimani Stone begins.

uncharted2-03

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is an Action-Adventure game just like its predecessor however this one is a little more ambitious and in my opinion a lot better. You will still be climbing buildings and traversing your way through dangerous environments using clever thinking and stealth to survive and not fall to your death.

maxresdefault (2)

What I really loved about the game-play here is how much the environment changed, it was a huge upgrade to the first game that stuck to the same setting. The exploration side of the game never got boring and it always kept me eager to explore, the gun play was all very similar to the last game, there were a few new weapon types available and a variety of new enemies to fight some were much tougher than others. The puzzles here were very challenging and really made me have to scratch my head at times and so they should in a game like this.

Uncharted-2-Among-Thieves-uncharted-3784794-1280-720

The game looks absolutely gorgeous, it takes place in various locations and all of them are beautiful, I particularly love how the colours in the city really pop off the screen, the details that the designers put into the layout and design of the city gives it plenty of personality, I love the design of the entire game but the city is my favourite.

Another breathtaking soundtrack by Greg Edmonson accompanies the gameplay, every track fits the environment and atmosphere of the game perfectly.

Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves is an outstanding game which is often called the best game in the Uncharted series by fans, so far this is best one I have played and I honestly could not find a single thing I did not like about the game, it kept me invested and had a great cast of characters. The story was fantastic and would make a great film one day if they ever made an adaptation. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a video game adventure of a lifetime that you will not want to miss 10/10

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (2007) Review

Uncharted_Drake's_Fortune

Developed by Naughty Dog and Published by Sony as an exclusive for the Playstation 3, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune was the first game of the now very popular video game series.

uncharteddrakesfortune_review

Treasure hunter Nathan Drake is on a fishing boat along with reporter Elena Fisher, Elena is trying to film a documentary while Nathan wants to discover his dead ancestor Francis Drakes coffin to try and find a clue to finding the lost city of El Dorado.

After an Attack from Pirates they are rescued by Nathans long time friend and father figure Victor Sullivan. The two adventurers ditch Elena to try and find the treasure together but not long into the adventure Sully is shot and Elena shows up leaving her and Nathan to try and discover El Dorado and escape the island they are trapped on.

uncharted-drakes-fortune-20070517035114423

I can confidently say that Uncharted is heavily inspired by Tomb Raider but it has a few differences which I really enjoy, you will be climbing buildings and cleverly figuring out the safest and best way to get across dangerous terrain and unstable structures which is easy enough to do and is a lot of fun.

518606260.jpg

The game-play is varied throughout the adventure, you have action segments, beautiful environments to explore with treasures to discover and really fun driving areas, I particularly enjoyed the speed boat area because you had to be careful as well as fast to avoid explosions and shoot the bad guys.

maxresdefault (1)

There are a few puzzles in the game but they are far too easy, I figured them out within about 10 minutes and none of them were challenging,  they helped to advance the plot but I would have preferred trickier scenarios.

Uncharted-PS4-6-3

The majority of the game is action based and requires the player to shoot down enemies to progress, I really enjoyed this part of the game, all of the guns are fun to use and racking up head-shots was very satisfying.

uncharted_still_1239726

The story of the game is really good and very memorable but the villains kind of suck. I never really felt that they were that threatening and I couldn’t even remember their names, It really is annoying because the rest of the plot is so good that a great villain really would of made the story fantastic.

The soundtrack was composed by Greg Edmonson who also did the soundtrack for the TV series Fire Fly. The music in this game is without a doubt absolutely breathtaking. Every track fits the mood and atmosphere perfectly and this is one of the best video game soundtracks I have ever heard its atmospheric and genuinely beautiful.

It may seem that I have really complained a lot about this game but I want to make it clear that I do think it is a great game I just wish that it had better antagonists and that the game as a whole felt more like an adventure with more difficult puzzles to solve and a little less action while focusing more on exploration and discovery. I don’t really think its fair to compare the game to Tomb Raider even though the inspiration is clearly there. Uncharted is a great game it is addictive and a lot of fun to play through, it is very short but overall the experience is very satisfying 8/10

Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) Review

220px-Rise_of_the_Tomb_Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the 2013 Tomb Raider game, just like its predecessor Rise of the Tomb Raider was developed by Crystal Dynamics and it was published by Square Enix who are most famous for the Final Fantasy Series.

Four years ago I reviewed the 2013 Tomb Raider game, you can check out that review here

https://ragglefragglereviews.com/2014/07/07/tomb-raider-2013-pc-360ps3-review/

TombRaiderpic14

The game takes place one year after the events of the first game, Lara is suffering from PTSD due to the trauma she suffered while on he last adventure. In order to seek answers to help explain the supernatural events that happened on the island she decides to follow her late father Richards research in order to find a lost city called Kitezh, according to her fathers widow Ana, Richard Crofts obsession with the lost city drove him to madness and suicide and she try’s to prevent Lara from going on the mission but Lara ultimately decides to go anyway in order to finish what her father could not.

JbOSQV

Rise of the Tomb Raider is an Action- Adventure game which uses stealth and combat as major elements to its game-play, finding the tombs and discovering the secrets of the lost city are only a small part of the game, there are a lot of enemies who want Lara dead so players need to use quick thinking and good reactions to survive.

maxresdefaultLara has a huge arsenal of weapons she can use including a bow and arrow, pistols, a shotgun, incendiary grenades and many more.

Lara can stop at various campfires throughout the game in order to gain new skills and in order to level up her equipment, the camp fires can also be used to fast travel between various locations in the game.

baba-yaga-45In a similar manner to the first game the most useful weapon is the bow and arrow which can be used for multiple uses including taking out your enemies, firing various types of arrows which can be modified for use with various element including but not limited too poison and fire. Lara can also shoot arrows tied to rope in order to bring down obstacles and too create rope bridges.

2B5GwjWith all the traversing, sneaking and combat you need to do in the game, its really important that it controls well and I can say that Rise of the Tomb Raider has fluent controls which interact with the player and the environments perfectly, once or twice when jumping between ledges I would fall to my death and it did seem a bit unfair although this hardly ever happened.

The Soundtrack was composed by Bobby Tahouri and is outstanding, in my last review I stated that the soundtrack sounded like it was composed by John Williams and I can say the same here, it has emotional and slower tracks for the more serious parts of the game and faster more intense tracks for the more adventurous segments of the game and overall it is fantastic.

Rise-of-the-Tomb-Raider-Preview-Screenshot-31Rise of the Tomb Raider is an amazing game, I loved the first game but I enjoyed this more as it had a more in depth look at Lara and her fathers relationship before he passed away and I found the adventure as a whole to be more thrilling, it has a wonderful soundtrack, crisp and fantastic visuals and fluent controls, Rise of the Tomb Raider is one excellent expedition. 9.7/10

Metal Gear Solid (PS1) Review

First of all a big thank you to Martin for sending us this game, Martin never gave us his last name when he sent us the game, but if your reading this Martin and you want to email me your last name to zeroslayer911@gmail.com I will be more than happy to edit the blog and put your last name in this review.

Now with all the thank you’s out of the way lets talk about Metal Gear Solid

Game Case
Game Case

I had never played Metal Gear Solid until a few months back, yeah ok you can shoot me.

This is because from what I saw in game magazines and snippets of game footage I thought Metal Gear Solid was just your average shooter. But oh boy was I wrong because Metal Gear Solid is one of the most well directed video games I have ever played. Everything about the game is so well made and pieced together its like that sweater your nan knits you every Christmas.

Your probably wondering what the game is about well I am going to describe the plot to the best of my abilities,
you take the role of Solid Snake fans of the original metal gear games know who I am talking about

Solid Snake

Solid Snake is a stealth agent on a mission to stop a nuclear weapon (Metal Gear) from destroying the earth, upon being briefed on the situation by Colonel Roy Campbell a former friend of Snake and retired fox hound member, he sends Snake into the enemy base to find and rescue The DARPA (The Defence Advanced Research Project Agency) Chief and the Armstech President, After finding the Darpa Chief in a jail cell, Snake questions if he gave Fox Hound the Password or not, The chief explains that Fox Hound Member Psycho Mantis has the ability to read minds and got the password from the chief by reading his mind. The Darpa Chief then appears to die from a heart attack, the same happens to the Arms Tech President after snake rescues him after Snake defeats another Fox Hound member called Revolver Ocelot with the help of a mysterious ninja. Before he dies the President explains to Snake that it is not heart attack that he is suffering from but that it is the effects of something called Foxdie. After discovering the truth behind these mysterious deaths and learning that the President also gave Fox Hound his password Snake calls Colonel Campbell and explains the situation. Snake is then told to call the Chiefs Niece Meryl, getting her codec is one of the ways the game breaks the fourth wall by making the player check the back of CD case to get her codec code. Snakes mission now is to defeat all of the remaining members of Fox Hound and to find a way to stop the nuclear weapon from striking the earth.

That’s a brief explanation of the plot, if talked about the whole plot I would giving away too many spoilers and also I would be writing for decades as the plot is very in depth. The plot gets really good towards the end of the game when in delves into Snakes past and the reason for his existence.

Another great aspect to this game is the music, Metal Gear Solid has a beautifully well orchestrated sound track, the music that plays when the Konami logo is Presented, is an extract from a previous game called police Nauts the track is called End of the Dark. Police Nauts is a previous game from metal gear creator Hideo Kojima. Like I said the music in Metal Gear Solid is amazing and it really suits the game and its atmosphere very well

This is an example of some music from Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid Opening Theme

Speaking of Audio the voice acting in Metal Gear Solid is amazing, the English dub of the original Japanese Voice acting is so well done that it honestly makes the game feel like an intense action movie. The voice acting can be heard countless times in the game but it is mostly through codec calls, the codec is what Solid Snake uses to contact his comrades for advice.

The codec calls are also what adds alot of really funny comedy to the game for example later on in the game when you follow Meryl into the ladies bathroom if you get into the bathroom before Meryl and call Mei Ling she calls you pervert and wont allow you to save your game for the rest of the mission.

By far my favourite part of the game is the boss fights, they are very creative and really make the player have to think to figure out the best methods of taking the bosses out. Here are a few of my personal favourites.

Revolver Ocelot

Revolver Ocelot

A well known boss in the MGS franchise, he’s a crack shot with his revolver and a hell of a lot of fun to fight

Sniper Wolf

Sniper wolf

A killer with a love of animals, I love this boss because out of all of the bosses after killing her and hearing her life story, I truly understood why she is killer and what drove her to be the way she is

Vulcan Raven (Second Encounter)

Vulcan Raven

Not so fond of his first encounter but the second time you fight him, he is really challenging but also really fun, also this boss fight is a really good opportunity to use the missile launcher my second favourite weapon in the game, my first being Snakes bare hands

Favourite boss in the game (Psycho Mantis)

Phycho Mantis

This guy is awesome he is so much fun to fight, the game breaks the fourth wall twice in this boss fight, once when Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and talks about previous Konami titles you’ve played and the second time I wont ruin for you as it is needed in order to beat Psycho Mantis but I promise you wont be disappointed.

Final Verdict

Metal Gear Solid is one of the best games I have ever played and currently my favourite PS1 game of all time. It never gets boring I have personally beaten the game a few times now and every time the plot is still very interesting and really makes me want to help Snake save the world. My only minor complaint is that if you skipped all of the cut scenes and codec calls the game is only two to three hours long, but unless your a speed runner you probably wont skip any cut scenes so this wont be much of a problem. I rate Metal Gear Solid a Solid 10/10. A fantastic game which really shows the ability video games have on the media and just how good video games can be, all hail Kojima.

On a final note the game has two endings, during the torture scene if you resist the torture you will get the Good Ending and if you submit you will get the not so good ending but a Comical ending with a reference to 2001 a space odyssey. THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME!!! Highly Recommend it.

Hope you enjoyed this review, if you respect my opinion I will respect yours

Rugrats Studio Tour (PS1) Review

Back in my youth I had a slight obsession with the Rugrats I used to own all of the videos and I had posters all over my room, I also remember owning quite a few Rugrats video games which as a kid they were amazing but when I come back to most of them as an Adult I seem to find issues which I never noticed before, on the bright side a few of them still remain to be pretty fun and one of those fun games is Rugrats Studio Tour for the Playstation 1.

Story

Tommy, Dil, Chuckie, Phil, lil, Angelica and Susie are all going on a movie studio tour but while they are there the Rugrats get up to their usual antics and they wander off by themselves, In the process of them leaving the grown-ups they lose Dil and he gets locked behind a door and the security guard loses the keys it doesn’t help that Dil took them off of him before he got locked in. The Rugrats want to get Dil back so they go around the movie studio to find keys that will fit in the door so that they can save Baby Dil.

Game play

So the babies venture off on their adventure through the movie studio to save Dil luckily while you a controlling the characters the controls are not too bad their not perfect though I do personally find them be a little bit loose but let that put you off playing this game. While playing through the game you will have to play as each of the characters which each have their owned themed world.

Phil and Lil- Diapers of thunder

Diapers of thunder is a race car themed world all of the levels consist of kart races this is one of my favorite worlds because its sort of like a crappy version of Mario Kart  instead of mushrooms, turtle shells and banana peels get ready to use baby bottles, eat cookies and throw diapers.

Angelica- Captain Cookies

Pirate Themed world

Treasure hunt scenes- Collect a specific amount of Reptar bars or you may have to open a big chest, don’t forget to avoid the evil Crab and the evil Clown Dolls

Treasure collecting scenes- Play as Angelica, Tommy, Chuckie and Tommy in these areas and collect as much treasure as you can before the timer runs out

Pirate Golf Scene-To win you must pot under par or on par you can also win keys by collecting a certain number of Reptar bars you play as all of the Rugrats in this area

Footrace scene- This the same as the Phil and Lil levels only difference is Angelica is on foot to get the key come first place.

Tag scene- Simply a game of tag, tag all of the babies to win a key

Susie- Lazy Saddles

Western Themed World

Gold Mine Scenes- To win keys the player must collect Reptar bars or collect all of the gold in the Level, There is a time limit in each area you can play as Tommy, Susie and Chucky

Round up Scenes- The player must round up all of the animals within a time limit to win keys in this area you can play as Susie, Angelica, Chuckie and Spike (Tommy’s Pet dog)

Western Golf Scenes- Same as the Pirate version just western themed either score par or below/ collect a certain number of Reptar bars to win keys

Milk Squirting Scenes- Get ready aim and fire milk at moving targets to win keys, I find the game hard to control when doing this as the controls feel all stiff for some reason.

Chuckie- outside Space (Pretty creative name right there)

A space themed world

Loonie Lander Scenes- What the hell is a loonie lander? That’s what my first thoughts were when I heard the name of this scene out turns out it some sort of alien hover craft damn I was hoping for something more awesome. Drive around and collect all of the aliens to win keys in this area you play as Chuckie, Tommy, Lil and Angelica

Zero Gees Scenes- Aliens have taken over your spacecraft. Escape to win a Key or by collecting Reptar Bars. Play as Chuckie, Phil and Susie

Lazy Beam Scenes Beam Scenes to win a key you must shoot lasers at targets this is similar to the milk squirting games

Tommy- Once you collect enough keys you can enter the final place where you will have to finish 2 games before you can find Dil.

Shirley Lock Holmes- There are two parts to this level in Part 1 you must play as angelica and find 4 keys which you can use to open the big door and in Part 2 you must climb a huge bookcase to find Dil too bad he enters another scene

Okey Dokey Jones- Play as Tommy and Follow the paths to find Dil

Reptar Scene- Reptar is a big green Dinosaur and for some reason he is pretty pissed at the Babies because he wants to eat them I guess its revenge for eating all the Reptar bars. Drive the Reptar Wagon and escape his evil clutches

Graphics

For a Ps1 game I have got to admit I am impressed, the graphics could have been improved when comparing to games such as Metal Gear but come on its Rugrats there is not exactly such a hype for Rugrats games and trust me compared to a lot of other Rugrats games the graphics are at least nice enough to not make you want to throw up so yeah well done game.

Music

Now the music I’m not so impressed with, ok I will admit the music is not terrible I just find it to be a little bit basic compared to other PS1 games, I understand that there may not have been a big budget for the making of this game and I guess since there was no computer software back then to electronically make the music it’s not too bad it just could be better in my opinion.

Final Verdict

I never thought I would say this about a Rugrats game but this one is worth buying, the controls may feel a little stiff and loose in some parts and the music isn’t brilliant but the overall game play is fun and that’s one of the most important factors to a video game so if you have a PS1 I recommend giving this game ago especially if you have kids. I am going to rate Rugrats Studio Tour a 7/10 because it may not be perfect but it sure is pretty damn good

I hope you enjoyed this review of Rugrats Studio Tour this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.
