Acme Antics and Dizzy Driving GBA Review

Unfortunately I cant get a lot of information about this game, what I have learned from playing it though is that it is a bundle of two short games based around Looney Tunes, one game is reaction based game and the other is a top down kart racer.

It was developed by Way Forward who you might know from the latest Donkey Kong Country Games and was released in 2005.

I’m going to review each game as I play them, I started with Acme Antics mainly because it was first one that was highlighted when I booted the game up.

This is a very beautifully animated game where you play the role of Road Runner escaping the claws of that greedy Wile Coyote.

The game looks amazing and feels very close to one of the cartoons in its animation and well chosen colour palette, the GBA always looked really great when developers put effort into the visuals and this is one of the best I’ve seen.

The only real issue with this is that the whole experience is very repetetive, the backgrounds are mostly the same and the music loops, when Wile shows up it gets a little more creative as he will start using ACME products to try and get the bird, he even has boss fights which again shake up the gameplay enough to keep it enjoyable, the whole thing is only about a half hour long but it is fun, they should have added a points system though so you could try and beat your high scores the next time you played.

Up next is Dizzy Drivers, I feel this will be a fairly short review so hopefully this next game has a bit more meat on its bones.

I actually really enjoyed this one Dizzy Drivers is as expected a kart racer and in the game your goal as your selected character is to come first in the races. I of course picked Foghorn Leghorn my favourite Looney Tunes character and considering he is the fastest in the game it was really quite easy to control. The game is not forgiving if you mess up and the other racers get a good lead on you, you haven’t got a chance in catching up so you really to master the controls to fully enjoy the game.

The music changed here too it wasn’t very good tracks but at least there was variety.

There are weapons in the game but they are not very memorable and most of them are hard to get hits with, I mostly just ignored them in the game but what you could expect was the obvious bombs, rockets and oil spills that come with every Kart Racer, a missed opportunity for some really cool themed things like Marvin the Martians shrink ray, Wile’s inventions, Taz wasn’t playable so he could be thrown at players and so on, none of those were used and I came up with those in about 15 seconds so I don’t really think there is much excuse for the lack of variety here.

So thats really all you get with this GBA title, I couldn’t say much because there wasn’t really much here, this is not a game I would say you have to play but if you did go straight Dizzy Driving because personally I think a more fleshed version of that without the Acme Antics game would have been better.

I think the most fair score I can give this is a 5/10 it controls well, it looks great and for a quick pick me up it is a pretty fun game but there isn’t a lot here and I think most people would get bored after a few play throughs. A good effort from way forward but cramming two tiny games into one cartridge when they could have had a much better fleshed out kart racer really takes away from this one.

That leaves just one more game and more movie for this second edition of Looney Tunes month. stay tuned over the next 10 days and hopefully the month will go out with a bang and with the next game I’m reviewing I really think it might make up for the less than impressive game choices this month !

See you then

Bugs Bunny’s Third Movie: 1001 Rabbit Tales Review

Welcome to the first Edition of Looney Tunes Month 2, throughout this month I will be looking at the next 3 Looney Tunes films, and 3 more video games.

If you missed the first Looney Tunes Month here are links to each review in their release order

Looney Tunes Month 1

Bugs Bunny’s Third Movie: 1001 Rabbit Tales is a 1982 Looney Tunes Anthology film, the movie contained animated shorts which had been abridged with new scenes to help sell the narrative of an original story. It was directed by Friz Freleng who did the new scenes and added in cartoons by Himself, Chuck Jones and Robert McKimson.

The films main plot involves both Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck having been assigned a job selling Story Books for the Rambling House Book Company. Both Characters are sent to different locations but antics from the various animated shorts eventually has them meeting up more than once before they both wind up at the Palace of the Sadistic Yosemiti Sam and his Son Prince Abba Dabba where the Fairytale shorts playout.

The Main plot works well enough and is very cleverly written so that the shorts blend in extremely well, in fact before writing this I actually assumed that most of the film was an original movie.

As for the Animated shorts I will go over each of them briefly and give my thoughts.

Cracked Quack

This a great short from Friz Freleng, it stars Daffy Duck who replaces a stuffed Duck in posh house in order to get free room and board for the winter.

Of course the family dog begins to catch on and tries to kill Daffy but unfortunately his owner Porky Pig still thinks this is his prized Stuffed Duck

Over all this a very funny cartoon with some great gags and is one of the highlights of this movie.

Apes of Wrath

Another Friz Freleng short Apes of Wrath is included here, in this cartoon Bugs is delivered to gorillas in disguise of a baby. Bugs takes advantage of the situation and causes hell for the father who has caught onto him and keeps running to the mother who is none the wiser. Fun short but I didn’t like how this one was shortened here even though it makes sense the original ending is very funny and this doesn’t quite feel right without it.

Wise Quackers

I was bit gutted about this one because the original short about Daffy Duck becoming Elmer Fudd’s slave to avoid being eaten is hilarious and is a classic Looney Tunes short but because the entire middle part was cut out of this it makes this section the most forgettable part of the film which is a shame because I don’t understand why they cut it down so much.

Ali Baba Bunny

Ali Baba Bunny is considered one of the greatest animated shorts of all time so it is only fitting that it was included, in the short Bugs and Daffy accidently take a wrong turn and end up in the Cave of Ali Baba, a treasure room which holds many riches and the Genie of the Lamp, Daffy gets greedy and wants all of the treasure for himself and keeps getting himself in bad situations which Bugs has to help him get out of.

This is a great short but again a good chunk of it is missing and while this is not as bad the previous cuts the most memorable scene is gone and of course the ending had to be cut as well to fit the narrative of this movie. This one is still good though with the few parts they left in so this Chuck Jones Cartoon still has a lot of charm.

Tweety and the Beanstalk

This cartoon has a really unique take on Jack and the beanstalk, I liked that Tweety was the bigger character here and Sylvester small it was a nice change to the usual flow of these cartoons. Nothing much was changed here apart from the removal of a racist sterotype at the end and in my book that is a change I can support.

Goldimouse and the Three Cats

A retelling of the Goldilocks story with Sylvester and his family, Im not a fan of this one I found the child character annoying and none of the jokes really worked for me so I found this one a little boring and uninspired.

Bewitched Bunny

I adore this short so much, its one of my favourite Chuck Jones Cartoons, its based on Hansel and Gretel and has so many great gags that land flawlessly, the ending was cut out of this version which is a shame because the last line of the cartoon while a little dated had me in stiches.

Red Riding Hoodwinked

A wacky take on the Red Riding Hood story, the main difference here is while the Wolf is chasing down Red, Sylvester the Cat is after her pet Tweety Bird, so the cat and the wolf end up in competition which ultimately ends with a really fun chase sequence at the end, I like this one but it isnt very memorable to me and generally I didn’t find it that funny but it is far from a bad cartoon.

The Pied Piper of Guadalpe and Mexican Borders

This next cartoon is a combination of two Speedy Gonzales Cartoons that were cut up and stitched together creating a very unique telling of both of these, it works surprisingly well and to be honest I prefer watching both of these cartoons this way because while alone they are each excellent, this is another fun way to see some of their best parts without you even knowing they were edited or even separate stories.

One Froggy Evening

Easily one of the best Cartoons ever made, One Froggy Evening is the hilarious tale of a man who finds a singing and dancing frog which only sings when they are alone and remains normal among other people, this gets the man in all sorts of trouble including being sent a mental intuition, the short is very well made with good timing on the jokes, they did cut the ending but it hardly makes much difference and honestly I think this works a little better without it.

Aqua Duck

A very small clip was used from this Cartoon and the rest was not in the movie, I feel it worth mentioning this as it was included but was a such a small part that it doesn’t really count as part of the compilation.

1001 Rabbit Tales is a good movie but its not as good as the likes of the Bugs Bunny/ Road Runner film, I think where this one falls short is all of the cuts it made to otherwise perfect cartoons but If you can appreciate how well Director Friz Freleng did to stitch this all of this together to make one long movie it is honestly quite impressive.

Is this one of my favourite Looney Tunes movies? I want to say no but I can see myself returning to this one again, I liked the majority of it and while I was little upset with the edits as long as you watch the original cartoons as well this movie is one I can definitely recommend.

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal (2007) Review

51pbB9Yj0EL._AC_

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal is a platforming shooter game starring various Looney Tunes characters, it was developed by Redtribe and was published by Warner Bros. Games it was released for the PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii.

maxresdefault

The Evil Dr Frankenbean has sent a robot army to multiple time periods in order to wipe out the Looney Tunes ancestry, now everyone’s favourite Looney Tunes characters need to travel through time to save their ancestors and to keep their own existence.

_-Looney-Tunes-Acme-Arsenal-Wii-_looneytune259084

The base game is a third person shooter, there is a quite a lot of platforming needed to get through the levels but you will find that most of time you will blasting the robotic enemies in the game with various guns ranging from regular firearms to more Looney Tunes and cartoon inspired weaponry.

xtwy7l

The other type of level in the main campaign are vehicle sections where you are timed to complete the stage while blasting through enemies as well as collecting clocks to keep increasing your time limit.

hqdefault

The games does have a multiplayer battle mode and 2 players can work together simultaneously in the main campaign, it should also be noted that during the main campaign you can use the money you collect to pay for various items these can include new skins for the multiplayer.

The soundtrack is quite uninspired, the music is not terrible but after a few minutes of the same loud and annoying tune repeating itself on a loop, I found myself muting the Television after sampling each of the tracks.

Looney Tunes: ACME Arsenal is one of the worst video games I have ever played, this is one of the most uninspired pieces of crap to come out out Warner Bros, in my opinion the game has no redeeming values at all, the graphics are mediocre at best and the soundtrack is not much better, the game play is really boring and nothing in the game is funny or carries any of the Charm of the Looney Tunes characters even the cut-scenes are boring and have had little effort put into them, I am ashamed to own this game and I will probably never play it again , it may not be the worst game I have ever played but it is definitely the worst piece of Looney Tunes Media I have witnessed so far. 2/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal

The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie (1981) Review

51HZP06X2RL._AC_SY445_

Directed by Friz Freleng the Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie is a compilation film of Looney Tunes shorts, it is the third Looney Tunes Theatrical film but is different when compared to the two films that came before it.

MV5BNjlmODFmMDMtZmUyNi00ZGExLWE2YTUtOTk0NDc4NWYzM2ViXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDgyODgxNjE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1368,1000_AL_MV5BOTg0N2E1NGMtNjBlMy00OTI0LTg5YTgtNjgzMDU5YThiYjMzXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDgyODgxNjE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1368,1000_AL_

The film opens with a very funny short film from 1958 titled Knighty Knight Bugs, this was a great way to introduce us to the film and is in my opinion one of its biggest highlights.

The rest of the movie is split into 3 acts each with classics shorts that have been edited to work as one long cartoon when put together, because of this instead of talking about my favourite shorts from the film I’m going to discuss each segment.

ACT 1 Satan’s Waitin

The-Looney-Looney-Looney-Bugs-Bunny-Movie-images-66eca51a-4038-4754-8c7d-ded6f4304bd081024-013

Using a premise from a short of the same name this act is about Yosemite Same trying to kill Bugs Bunny but constantly failing in many comedic ways each leaving him being sent back to hell. In my opinion this act stands out by showing a caring side to Bugs that we havent really seen in the past feature films. It begins with Bugs wanting to protect granny from Sam after she inherits 50 million dollars, each time Bugs manages to take out Sam, Sam is sent to a new time period by Satan to try again eventually leading to him giving up completely and accepting his fate.

I didnt really like this segment, at first it was great but the premise really dragged out longer than it needed too, it doesn’t help that I am a big fan of the original Sylvester and Tweety short that this is loosely based on and a short that I think is a lot funnier in comparison.

Act 2 The Unmentionables

MV5BNTRhYzVkZmMtMDY0ZC00MzJlLThlZGItZGEyZjU1YTgyMDhiXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMDM0MzU2NA@@._V1_MV5BNDI2NDQ3MjktZTk2NC00ZDRkLWExOGUtZTA5ZTc5ZDYwNTA3XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyODQyMTA1Mjg@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1666,1000_AL_

This Act is really great and is by far my favourite part of the movie, it includes three shorts starring the gangster Rocky, these shorts are each spliced together with clever narration and direction to make it work smoothly.

Golden_Yeggs_TitleThe-Looney-Looney-Looney-Bugs-Bunny-Movie-images-5f1c2f0f-9acd-412f-9963-e1886de2394

This section does use one of the funniest Daffy Duck shorts Golden Yeggs, in this short the gangster Rocky steals Daffy Duck after he is expected to lay 24 carrot gold eggs, if you enjoy seeing Daffy Duck in an extremely uncomfortable situation and under serious stress then this is definitely the short for you.

Act 3 The Oswalds

081024-007MV5BOWQwOGFlZmMtMDRkNy00MzBlLTk3MDMtZDZmMzUxMDczNWFhXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTI4ODc2NDY@._V1_

The final act of the film is an awards cermony hosted by Bugs Bunny, an Oswald is an award given to an animated character for their performance in a short, I actually think this concept is really cool and I wish something like this did exist as a fun award ceremony for children to enjoy although to be honest I would probably still watch it myself.

9735125f6c56ebd4c1524b101926759cs-l400

This segment has four Looney Tunes shorts with the last one being worked into the plot of Act 3, my two favourites are Birds Anonymous where Sylvester tries to get help to overcome his addiction to eating birds. This short is really well directed and is extremely funny, it also gives a bit sympathy towards Sylvester who really wants to give up birds but he just does not have the will power to do it.

hqdefaultmaxresdefault

The other short is Show Biz Bugs this is a very well known short where Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck go head to head to out do each other on stage the joke being that Bugs always gets applauded but Daffy always gets booed eventually driving him to complete madness, in the end he does finally get an applause but it is what he had to do to gain that which what makes this short so cruelly hilarious.

The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie is not one that I could really recommend you watching for more than one viewing, while I did enjoy the shorts I did not enjoy the way they were stitched together, a lot of the sections seemed to drag on longer than necessary not to mention that having them edited and changed in places took away some of the charm of the originals. The best part of the movie was the Daffy Duck short from Act 2 and then the entirety of Act 3, I do not think this is a bad film I just wish it was a more similar to the Bugs Bunny/ Road Runner Movie which had a really nice mix of shorts with only a few being edited.

Overall a pretty fun movie but not one that I look forward to revisiting in the future.

I hope you enjoyed this review of The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie

Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Blowout (1990) Review

Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout - Label

Bugs bunny’ s Birthday Blowout is video for the Nintendo Entertainment System, it was developed by Kemco and was one of the last games released for the NES before the release of the Super Nintendo.

Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout (Nintendo Entertainment System)

Its Bugs Bunny’s 50th Birthday and he receives an invitation to a party celebration in his honour, Bugs is very excited however his other Looney Tunes friends are not happy that they were not told about this party so they go out of their way to prevent Bugs from arriving to the party location.

rcPbwL9

The game is a basic 2D plat-former where the main goal is too get from the start to the end of every level but this is a little more ambitious than is to be expected because these levels require a little exploration and thought due to tricky enemy placements and multiple paths with often only one of them allowing you to progress further.Ā  The games beautiful art style and colour palette help to make the game a joy to explore in order to see all of the gorgeous backgrounds and imagery.

6-9-2014 10-51-14 AM

The games enemies can do a lot of damage if they come in contact with Bugs, you cant jump on them but they can be knocked out using a mallet to hit them on the head, I never really used this myself as I found it easier to jump over the enemies and avoid them.

unnamed

The boss fights are really fun to encounter because all of them are based on various Looney Tunes characters, some of the encounters you may not expect such as Sylvester Jr and Hawky.

These are all very easy however and all of them fight in a similar manner, I wish they were more creative as none of them are very memorable.

bug-bunny-birthday-blowout-screen-shot-2018-04-02-11-05-pm-4

Between levels you can use the carrots you’ve collected to earn some more lives in bonus games, in one game you need to line up numbers and in the other game you need to wack multiple weasels.

The soundtrack is quite fun but its very repetitive and the same tune plays throughout worlds only changing every few levels.

Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Blowout is not a perfect game as it falls short in a few places however it is a very solid plat-former, with great controls and is overall a lot of fun to play, I do wish the boss fights and sound track were more creative but I really enjoyed everything else and I cant think of many negatives to this one, this is better quality than most licensed games and with it being quite cheap to pick up I would recommend getting a copy to check it out for yourself

8.2/10

I hope you enjoyed this review ofĀ  Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Blowout for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie Review

910T5xAnRqL._SX300_

The Bugs Bunny/ Road Runner Movie was a 1979 compilation movie of popular Looney Tunes shorts directed by Chuck Jones, it is the second Looney Tunes feature film after the film Bugs Bunny Super star that is a little controversial because one of Bugs Bunny’s creators didn’t credit the other artists that helped him create the character, a clever scene in this film credits all of the creators and refers to them as Bugs Bunny’s many fathers.

bugs

MV5BMjhkMTM3ZGEtOGRiOS00YTZhLTk3YjctMDA2OTE0OTY4N2I5XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTc0NjY1ODk@._V1_

The film is introduced to us by Bugs Bunny who is giving us a tour of his mansion, while he is doing this he is discussing framed pictures of characters he has met in his past and explains his previous interactions with these characters through animated shorts.

Most of these Looney Tunes films are compilations of old animated shorts so I will discuss a handful that I think are the best in the compilation. my top 5 for the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie are

5. Long Haired Hare

LongHairedHare

ti108219

The premise of Long Haired Hare is about Bugs Bunny trying to play various instruments and enjoy his music, in a house near by an enthusiastic opera singer is practising for an upcoming show but Bugs music keeps distracting him and the bully of a singer keeps destroying Bugs instruments forcing Bugs to take revenge by conducting his show and the results are absolutely hysterical, the only downside is that in the movie this cartoon is shortened so your not watching full original version.

4. Robin Hood Daffy

robin-hood-daffy-c2a9-warner-brothers

MV5BNDYzYzk5ZDItNjBiMC00YzIzLWFlOGMtM2JhOWUyZjA3YjdmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDgyODgxNjE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1368,1000_AL_

Daffy Duck stars as Robin Hood and in this version of the story Daffy is a really clumsy and cocky Robin Hood who keeps failing in everything he does, he gets laughed at by fryer tuck played here by Porky Pig who does not believe that he is Robin Hood and Daffy needs to prove his identity. This is one of my favourite Daffy Duck shorts of all time, it is hilarious and full of slapstick comedy and I love it so much, there one scene in particular which involves trees that will make anyone laugh, the reason I have put this so low on my top 5 is because again in this movie its shortened which sucks because it really is a fantastic cartoon.

3. Duck Amuck

a0fb3b6baf35c4bcbe256f5a0522bf42--looney-tunes-ducks

MV5BNzRiNjkxODctMGUwMS00ZTgxLTg4MzItNjJhZTc0OTI2NTQ5XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTQxMTIxMTk@._V1_

Any fan of Looney Tunes knows that Duck Amuck is one of the most well known and preserved cartoons of all time, what makes this one stand out among others is how it breaks the fourth wall in a very clever and hilarious manner.

In the short Daffy Duck is cruelly tormented and messed with by a sadistic animator, he gets his colours changed, voice changed and is forced to constantly change his outfits and physical appearance all for the amusement of this animator, if you want good laughs and really crazy animations and pacing you will adore this short.

4. Whats Opera Doc

5d015cf01ae094b4d447e19b9f5937d1363c43a3_00

MV5BNTFlZjNiMTktOGM4Yi00OWZiLTk4MzAtMmZmOTRmMGIyZWE0XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDgyODgxNjE@._V1_

My favourite Looney Tunes short of all time is Whats Opera Doc, this short is a musical comedy starring Elma Fudd and Bugs Bunny, it is loosely based on real operas and uses a blend of orchestral music and comedy extremely well and this is why I love it so much, its a really dramatic but also ridiculous action packed comedy which will have you in stitches and maybe even a few shed tears by the end.

5. The whole Wil. E. Coyote and Road Runner section

558640_v3

hqdefault

This section appears right at the end of the movie and is a bunch of Wil. E. Coyote and Road Runner shorts stitched together to make one long short film.

The idea of these is that a greedy, stupid and unlucky Coyote keeps trying eat the fast running Road Runner Bird. what makes these so hilarious is all the ways that the Coyote gets hurt but what I think is the funniest thing is just how stupid he is, he keeps buying these really flawed traps from the same company ACME and never learns to either stop buying these traps or just eat another animal.

The Bugs Bunny/ Road Runner movie is a great compilation of Looney Tunes shorts, there is a nice variety of cartoons here and even though not all of the classic characters made appearances it is still very entertaining and how I would recommend someone to watch some of the funniest Looney Tunes shorts of all time.

I hope you enjoyed this review of The Bugs Bunny / Road Runner Movie

Bugs Bunny: Super Star Review

Bugs_Bunny_Superstar-917703385-large

Bugs Bunny: Super Star is a Looney Tunes Documentary about the the history of the Looney Tunes, the documentary also played 9 full Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons, the majority of these shorts starred Bugs Bunny hence the name of the film.

62_bugs_bunny_superstar_part_1_a_corny_concerto_deinterlacedmp4_snapshot_1354_20171008_201957

The main focus of the film is the documentary segment and while this is very interesting and is a deep look into the efforts and cost of making the Looney Tunes shorts the movie is very controversial because of some information that was provided by Bob Clampett one of the animators at Warner Bros.

1354742623_4BobClampett001

In an audio commentary from 2012 the films Director Larry Jackson stated that in order for Bob Clampett to agree to be in the documentary and allow footage of his cartoons and memorabilia to be shown he had to agree via contract that Clampett would host the documentary, would choose all of the shown cartoons and would approve the final cut of the film. According to Jackson, Clampett was insecure and didn’t want to give much credit to other Looney Tunes animators and he would’t allow the cartoons made by his colleagues to have credits but his could, this information should be taken with a pinch of salt as its not evidenced but it made people very angry and if it is true then Bob Clampett should be ashamed of himself for trying take credit away from his fellow legendary animators.

The best part of the film is the cartoons and I will briefly go over my five favourites.

  1. A Wild Hare

eb4184360799703c9b44ca614bbb075eHare

A Wild Hare stars both Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, in this cartoon Elmer has never met Bugs Bunny and unfortunately picks him to be the next target of his shotgun, in a typical Looney Tunes fashion Bugs takes advantage of the hunters stupidity and goes out of his way to humiliate him and slowly cause him to have a mental breakdown.

2. Walky Talky Hawky

Walky_talky_hawkyWalky Talky Hawky (24)720full-walky-talky-hawky-screenshot

A young Chicken Hawk is looking for his first chicken to eat, he stumbles across one of my favourite Loony Tunes characters Foghorn Leghorn, Foghorn being a chicken decides to trick the hawk into thinking that a dog is a chicken and the hawk tries many schemes to catch and eat the dog resulting in some very memorable and funny moments, this is one of my favourite cartoons with Foghorn Leghorn and I would recommend watching it you can.

3. I Taw a Putty Tat

hqdefaultI_Taw_a_Putty_Tat1.JPG

In this cartoon a young lady phones a pet shop to get a new bird after her Canary “has gone missing” we later find out that her cat Sylvester has been eating them. The new bird arrives a young canary named Tweety Pie who Sylvester cant wait to sink his teeth into. Growing up I used to really enjoy the Sylvester and Tweety cartoons due to their slapstick nature and similarities to the Tom and Jerry Cartoons. I believe this was one of the first cartoons to star these characters and it did a great job of introducing them to audiences not too mention that it is also very funny.

4. Hair Raising Hare

MV5BZjk5NzQxZDEtZjBkZC00ODY3LWEzOGQtOWU0OTJkZmNjOTgzXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTAyODkwOQ@@._V1_SY500_CR0,0,685,500_AL_5cd832b93fb43c5f1f87481f6e1b04a3Gossamer_restored

An evil scientist tricks Bugs Bunny into coming to his castle in order to feed him to his pet monster. This is probably one of the most well known Bugs Bunny cartoons and its often used as reference in various Looney Tunes video games and other media.

This one does have a lot of the standard slapstick humour which is to be expected but it very clever in other-ways, its a homage to classic monster movies and cheesy old horror films, it also breaks the fourth wall a lot and addresses the audience of the cinema this is because many of these older cartoons would be played before movies.

I really love this one and to be honest it is the best cartoon in this movie but its not the one made me laugh the most so while it is still hilarious its not my favourite.

5. My Favourite Duck

My favourite duck is my favourite animated short in this movie, it focuses on Porky Pig who wants to enjoy a relaxed vacation camping in the woods but unfortunately he is noticed by Daffy Duck who does everything he can to ruin Porky’s vacation blackmailing him with a sign that says if he hurts a duck he will be hit with a hefty fine.

This is Daffy Duck at his absolute best, Chuck Jones was the director and he added much of the fantastic slapstick and witty humour that he is known to add to his cartoons. This one has me in laughing fits every time I see it and is in my opinion one of the funniest Looney Tunes shorts ever made.

Bugs Bunny: Superstar is a difficult film for me to say whether I like it or not, the cartoons are all great but the main meat of the film is the documentary that is so controversial that I don’t know whats true and whats not, personally I would say that unless you really want to watch all of the Looney Tunes media available then just watch the shorts provided here otherwise you could skip this one and go straight into the Bugs Bunny/ Road Runner movie which I believe is a much better feature.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Bugs Bunny: Superstar

Porky Pig’s Haunted Holiday (1995) review

Porky Pigs Haunted Holiday is a 2d plat-former developed by phoenix interactive for the Super Nintendo Entertainment system.

Porky Pig wants to book a holiday and while looking through a brochure he falls asleep and has a nightmare about going on a spooky vacation.

The game is your standard plat-former and is in a way a little bit of a Mario clone considering that you damage enemies by jumping on them and you you can collect cakes, and once you collect a certain amount you are rewarded with lives and additional points, its just shame that this is not a very good Mario clone.

The controls are decent and are very easy to get used too but the level design is where the experience becomes a little frustrating, the stages are fairly simplistic but enemies are really quite difficult to avoid because they are placed really unfairly, a lot of the time they will show up last second or will be hidden under platforms making it almost impossible to not hit them and take damage.

Another frustrating problem with the stages is that some platforms are not clear that you can land on them, sometimes they look like they are just part of the background making leaps of faith the only way to check if they are safe or not.

On the bright side the game is very generous with its check points and offers unlimited continues making the game quite easy to play and making up for some of its less than satisfying game-play.

The graphics are fantastic for a licensed game and Porky is animated really well, he sometimes gets frustrated and taps his foot while scrunching up his face which is very charming and quite cute.

porky-pigs-haunted-holidayThe most interesting and impressive part of the game is that every-time you restart the game either by resetting the console or using a continue the scenery of the level you are on changes, this is really cool and not something I would expect from an older video game such as this.

The boss fights were all very easy but I did enjoy seeing different Looney Tunes characters, I do wish that more of the main Looney Tunes were in the platform stages instead of just the boss fights.

The soundtrack really sucks, its the same annoying tunes played on loop and its not even good music I found myself muting the game after a while and playing different music instead.

Porky Pigs Haunted Holiday is an ok game but it really is nothing special, I really liked the animations and visuals but I wasn’t a fan of much else and overall I would say to skip this one unless you are a Looney Tunes Super Fan.

5.3/10

As a bonus this is a link to a review I did of Taz Mania on the Sega Mega Drive, this Looney Tunes game is much worse than the game I reviewed today so if you would like to see my views on that game check out the link below

The Origins of the Looney Tunes

Welcome the first official Looney Tunes month over the next few weeks I will be discussing the origins of Looney Tunes, the first three Looney Tunes Movies and three Looney Tunes videos games.

I will admit that is only scratching the surface of Looney Tunes media but in the future I might do more parts depending on how popular this one is, so with out further ado lets get into some of this rather complicated history.

225full-rudolf-ising

It all stared with Rudy Ising and Hugh Harman ex animators for Walt Disney in the 1920’s, when Disney’s animation studio moved to California Ising and Harman stayed behind in Kansas City where they attempted to start their own animation studio.

Unfortunately this plan failed leaving them to work for Walt again on his Alice comedies and their biggest star at the time Oscar the Lucky Rabbit.

Not long after this Disney’s Producer Charles Mintz (Pictured on the Right) left the studio and took Oscar the Lucky Rabbit With him, along with Ising and Harman who did a lot of work on the previous Oscar shorts, a few very successful shorts came from this decision but ultimately it all went down hill when Universal Pictures who owned the rights to Oscar the Lucky Rabbit started their own animation studio replacing Charles Mintz and leaving Ising and Harman unemployed.

BoskoTheTalkInkKid1929

Ising and Harman in desperation to continue their dream of animating funded a live action- animation hybrid short about a black character named Bosco, this short paid off and got the animators working with Warner Bros.

Eventually Bosco starred in many of his own shorts under the name of Looney Tunes and as well as this the animators also made other various shorts with Warner Bros under the name of Merrie Melodies a name that was a parody of Disney’s popular shorts Silly Symphonies.

After a disagreement on their contract Ising and Harman left Warner Bros and kept the rights to Bocso.

After losing Bosco Warner Bros made a new character to star in the Looney Tunes named Buddy.

Buddy was not as popular as Bosco was so Warner Bros hired new directors to help increase popularity in the Merrie Melodies and Looney TunesĀ  shorts.

Tex Avery, Friz Freleng and Bob Clampett where chosen and together they helped to make some very memorable shorts including what I consider to be one of the most important animated shorts of all time “I haven’t got a hat” this short introduced us to Beans the Cat and other animal friends including the first ever appearance of Porky Pig.

Beans the Cat, Porky Pig and the other animal friends went on to star in their own shorts and while these were all very good, Porky Pig remained a fan favourite and the others were very soon forgotten about.

A_Wild_Hare_Lobby_CardMel_Blanc_-_1959

In 1936 Mel Blanc was hired to voice some new Looney Tunes Characters that became popular between 1936 and 1944, these included Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck as well as others that became popular and beloved over the years. As the years went by more characters were added to the Looney Tunes family such as Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Pie, Wile Coyote, Road Runner and others.

These characters boosted the Looney Tunes to immense popularity making them a serious rival to Disney at the time, four of their shorts are now included in the national film registry which means that they will always be preserved and protected, these films are Porky in Wacky Land, Duck Amuck, One Froggy Evening and my personal favourite Looney Tunes short What’s Opera Doc.

While these characters kept up their popularity and went on to win many academy awards this is the brief history of how they originated and in the future I might discuss the more unique variations of Looney Tunes that came decades later but for now I will leave you some YouTube links to Looney Tunes compilations to check out and I will see you for the next part of Looney Tunes month where I will be tackling one of their many video games.

I hope you enjoyed this look into the origins of the Looney Tunes
