Book Review: The Whisper Man by Alex North

The Whisper Man is a murder mystery/horror novel and is the first by writer Alex North. The book takes place 20 years after the capture and incaseration of Child Serial Killer Frank Carter.

Carter gained the nickname of Whisper Man after victims parents complained of hearing whispering outside of the windows the nights building up to the child’s disappearance.

Police officer Tom and his young son Jake move into Frank Carter’s old home in Featherbank but it isn’t long until Jake is having supernatural communication with the ghost of a little girl and is learning about the horrors that took place in the house all those years ago.

Detective Pete willis who put Carter behind bars is still struggling mentally with the things he saw and has become a struggling alcoholic but he soon needs to get his head back in the game when a copy cat serial killer steals and murders young Neil Spencer.

With a new killer on the loose Tom and Pete must work together to try and figure out who the killer is before it is too late. Can they figure out the mastery, save Neil Spencer and stop any more children from going missing? You must read to find out!

Staring off with the positives I want to praise Alex North on this first book for his realistic approach to the serial killer trope by looking more into the psychological reasoning behind the kidnappings instead of just having another cookie cutter murderer.

North’s writing style adds a lot to the atmosphere and character building without drifting too far away from the initial narrative, you see this is a murder mystery novel but with quite of supernatural elements which makes the story even more creepier.

I also really enjoyed the realistic relationship issues that the novel focused on, being an important part of this story while also being handled in a mature and serious manner.

The characters were all great in this and I didn’t have any issues with their dialogue, however I will say that I was disappointed with the reveal of the killer as the book left no clues and this person wasn’t even mentioned until near the end.

It was fine enough but I was a little bummed that I wasn’t given any chance to solve the mystery myself.

I also wanted to learn more about Frank Carter and his past, we don’t get much information at all about his character or the murders he committed.

The Whisper Man was highly recommended to me as a horror novel due to my fascination of true crime and murder investigations.

I must say that from a story telling perspective I was hooked on this, but it was character relationships that really did it for me. Jake shows some signs of that he could be on the spectrum, especially in the way he communicates his emotions and reacts to situations.

Jake also shows signs of being able to communicate with the supernatural through the ghost of a little girl and a boy under the floorboards.

A theme that runs throughout the book is broken father and son relationships, as well as Jake and Tom to avoid spoilers I will say that more of these broken relationships are revealed throughout the book.

Not an issue to have a repetitive pattern as long as it doesn’t feel over done and I will say that it is written very well in this story. I just thought I was worth pointing this out as I do wonder if the Author has had similar family issues in the past which is why it is so heavily spoken about in the novels text.

I really enjoyed this story it followed a fairly realistic take on the murderer trope and it was I genuinely gripped by Whisper Man and do recommend it as a book. I only wish more was written about the original Whisper Man’s past and more clues were left in the text to allow readers to figure out the mystery themselves.
