Paper Mario Sticker Star Review (3DS)

I love the Paper Mario games with one exception the Wii version (Super Paper Mario) but I will talk about that game some other day. The Paper Mario games are great for many reasons, they are full of hilarious comedy, they have epic story lines and most importantly they are really fun to play. With me being a big fan of the series I couldn’t resist but to buy Sticker Star as soon as I possibly could

ImageStory

The Story of Sticker Star is nothing of an epic tale which is a shame since other games in the series have had some really good story lines. The story line may not be epic but it’s not a terrible story line. The story is that the members of the mushroom kingdom are having their annual sticker festival which they have each year to celebrate to power of the royal stickers (five crown stickers which have the power to grant the wishes of the person who wears them).  When presenting the royal stickers Bowser gets his claws on one of them and the rest get blown away to other locations in the game. Bowser’s wish comes true and he becomes a super shiny sticker, he then kidnap’s Princess Peach and Mario has to save her.Image

Game play

The Paper Mario we all know and love is back, that’s right we have gone back to turn based game play with a little twist. We have gone back to turn based game play which is great but now we fight using stickers instead of using partners who have different abilities and powers and this works really well surprisingly.

It’s not just fighting you need stickers for in some cases in the game you will need to use stickers to communicate with certain objects communicating with these objects will either give you a new item which you can turn into a big sticker or you will need to communicate with certain objects in the game in order to continue.

You do not level up in sticker star which is unusual for a Paper Mario game instead you need to find health upgrades throughout the game to increase your overall health, you can get your health to a Max of 100hp and I recommend that you find all of these health upgrades because when you get to the Final boss you may need that little bit of extra hp.

Finally I want to talk about a certain type of sticker called a blue door sticker. Throughout the game you will find doors on objects but you are not able to access them. You are not able to access these doors because you need to buy some blue door stickers to access them, once you place a blue door sticker over the door you can then open the door and go inside. Inside these doors can be anything from money, sticker/objects or health upgrades. You will need to access certain blue doors in the game in order to continue but you can find them yourself.

Image

Apart from the story line the only other negative aspect to the game I can think of is that there are only 6 worlds and I can’t help but feel that there should be 8 worlds in the game.

Graphics

You’re going to want to crank that 3D right up for this game because the 3D really helps the game look amazing and it’s not the kind of 3D that hurts your eyes or makes you feel sick.  The game looks amazing, it’s full of colour, the characters and environments are smooth and at times it really feels like there is a real paper world in your hands, the 3D is perfect it doesn’t make the game look any different and it actually enhances the experience. I won’t say this too often when talking about 3DS games but if you get Sticker Star I recommend playing in 3D throughout the entire game.

Image

Music

My favourite Paper Mario soundtrack used to be from the thousand year door but now my favourite Paper Mario soundtrack is from Sticker Star. The music in this game is absolutely fantastic and so far some of the best I have heard on the 3DS. The music fits the characters and environments so well and just like the 3D it really enhances the experience. My favourite Piece of music is right at the end of the game before you go into Bowser’s Castle it is pretty much a rock and roll remix of the over world theme.

Final Verdict

If you like Paper Mario you will love sticker star and I highly recommend buying it. It looks and sounds amazing and finally turn based game play is back. Paper Mario Sticker Star is a hilarious adventure which can be loved by the whole family. The game may be amazing but there are a few issues I found with the game. The story line is basic and there are only 6 worlds in the game and for those reasons alone I am going to give Paper Mario Sticker Star a 8/10 the game had a few flaws but overall it is a very good 3DS title which is worth picking up.

Super Mario Bros (NES) Review

Super Mario Bros (NES) Review

I was flicking through my video game collection a few days ago and I came across a very nostalgic game from my childhood Super Mario Bros on the NES, now I gather everyone has heard of this game or has at least played it, Super Mario Bros was one of the very first NES released and is a beloved game among many fans but is it all it’s cracked up to be let’s find out in this review of Super Mario Bros. (Just to prewarn you this review will most likely be shorter than the others as the game is pretty basic in all aspects)

Image Story

In the game you take control of Mario an overweight Italian plumber who likes nothing more than taking magic mushrooms and eating plat life to gain powers (No he is not on drugs……….Or is he?) any way Mario has heard some tragic news and found out that the girl he has his heart set out for Princess Toadstool has been kidnapped by an evil turtle known as King Koopa (Bowser) Mario must adventure across the Mushroom Kingdom (ok what’s with all the mushroom quotes?) in search of the missing Princess and her kidnapper.

Game play and Graphics

There are three types of levels in the game the usual outdoor/ underground plat former levels, underwater swimming levels and Bowser’s many castles in the game, The game looks and plays great it has a nice colour palette for a game that came out in 1985 and Mario’s controls are tight and easy to learn, Mario moves and attacks in different ways depending on the level you are on and if you have found an item.

Items

Mushroom- If Mario eats the mushroom he will grow twice his size

Power Flower- Eating this flower will give Mario the power to shoot fire balls from his hands

Star Power- Eating this star will make Mario temporarily invincible

1UP Shroom- Eating this Mushroom will give the player an extra life (an extra life can also be obtained if the player collects 100 coins)

ImageMusic

The music in this game is great, It is both really fun to listen to and really easy to remember, one problem there is a total of 32 levels in this game but Nintendo only gave us three songs to listen to, these songs are great the only problem is that listening to the same music over and over again can get really annoying apart from that the music is awesome

Bosses

The Many Bowser’s

I guess you could say that there are 8 bosses in the game but does it really count if all the bosses are pretty much the same apart from little changes like a platform Mario can jump on or the fact that in the later levels Bowser will throw axes and for that reason alone I am not going to go into detail of each boss because you would just read the same thing over and over again, If you have fire power shoot him until he dies, if not jump over him or run under him and hit the Axe to chop down the bridge. I love Nintendo I understand that this is one of their first really popular games but could they really have not been more creative especially with the in game bosses (How about an explanation to how Bowser seems to survive every time I throw him into lava because I’m pretty sure he would die).

ImageFinal Verdict

Now I know I’ve done a little bit of bitching about this game but I’m not gonna lie even though I find these issues I still love it, It is one of those many video game titles which will live in my heart forever, I’m not going to tell you to buy the game because chances are you already own it whether it’s on the NES, DS, PC or anything else Super Mario Bros is a great game and it has my seal of improvement 8/10.  I hope you enjoyed this review of Super Mario Bros on the NES this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Saturday Anime Review: Mega Man Starforce

Yay Mega Man one of my favourite video game series of all time, it’s made by capcom and like most capcom videogames it kicks ass. We all know about the classic Mega Man series for the nes, The Mega Man X series for the snes, the Mega Legends series and so on but what about the Mega Man starforce video game series for the Nintendo DS did you even know this existed I sure didn’t until I watched the Anime which is based on the games and this a review of that anime and that anime is Mega Man Starforce. I have never played the games this is a review of the Anime in general.

Image Ok let’s first of all discuss a problem and that of course is the fact that in the UK and USA only season 1 of the show is available as the later seasons were only aired in Japan why you may ask? I have no idea it’s probably because some new stupid show came out and they needed a time space for it to be aired so they just said bye bye to Mega Man Starforce and Hello to Super Kitty Rainbow Fight or something.

With that off my chest let’s talk about the show in general

Meet Geo Stelar ImageHe is the main character of the show and he wants to become an astronaut so he can go into space and look for his father who went missing, Everyone thinks that he is dead but Geo is certain that his dad is still out there. Ever since his dad went missing geo hasn’t gone to school and is instead studying at home (Ok let’s skip ahead a few chapters here as I don’t want to ruin much of the story for anyone who wants to check out the show). One night Geo is sat outside using a special pair of glasses his father once wore called the visualizer which allows EM energy to be seen by the naked eye and while Geo uses the visualizer he sees what looks like to lights fighting but one of these lights starts coming towards Geo and Geo gets hit by this light.

Now Meet Omega-XisImage

That light which hit Geo happened to be an Alien called Omega-Xis who has the power to channel EM energy. Geo meets Omega-Xis in his room, Omega-Xis explains who he is and his purpose on earth he also explains to Geo that he needs his help to defeat any of the bad aliens which will use the EM energy to merge with people who they can then control to their own advantages. Just like the other aliens Omega-Xis can merge with people using EM energy so Omega-Xis asks for Geo’s permission for them to merge energy cells so they can become one to defend earth (and for other reasons which I won’t say because like I said before I don’t want to ruin too much of the story). Geo agrees to let Omega-Xis  merge with him because Omega-Xis knows stuff about Geo’s Father, when geo and Omega-Xis merge  as one they become Mega Man and fight for earth’s safety begins.

If you’re a Mega Man fan go and watch this show because even though we can only watch the first season it’s a really awesome show, it has great story line, really shows the capabilities of an Anime based on a video game series and in general like I said before it kicks ass so go buy it you can get on Amazon pretty cheap and I will even leave you link providing you live in the UK as I am British.

I hope you enjoyed this review Mega Man Starforce the Anime this review is of my own opinion

Luigi’s Mansion (Nintendo GameCube) review

This review was partially rewritten in 2018 by the original author due to how terribly it was written

Its Luigi time !! (sorry that was terrible) XD

Image

In 2001 the Game Cube was released and too a lot of peoples surprise it was the first ever Nintendo console to not be released alongside a brand new Mario game however it wasn’t so bad as his often pushed aside brother Luigi took the spot light instead.

In the game our hero Luigi receives an invitation to come and view a mansion that he won in a competition, Mario agrees to meet Luigi at the mansion but isn’t there when Luigi arrives, with his brother no where in sight Luigi enters the mansion hoping to find him, it doesn’t take long for dastardly ghosts to attack Luigi but thankfully he is rescued by a strange old man called professor Elvin Gadd who gives Luigi a vacuum cleaner and teaches him to capture the ghosts, Luigi re-enters the mansion with his trusty new weapon in search for Mario.

 Image

Apart from having some slippery controls there is plenty to do in Luigi’s Mansion, the main objective is to re-capture all of the ghosts, standard ghosts can be captured once they have been stunned and some are stronger than others and each is unique in how they attack Luigi, your vacuum can blow as well as suck which is often needed in order to defeat elemental spirits, throughout the game you can collect elements which you can use to defeat some of the more trickier ghosts for example ice spirits can be defeated with fire and water ghosts can be defeated with ice.

Your main goal however is to capture the portrait ghosts, these ghosts can be considered mini bosses due to how complex and different each ghost is to defeat not to mention that they also have more health, some my favourite ghosts to fight are the grandmother, the baby and the twins.ImageIn the bottom right corner of the image above you can see the game boy horror this device can be used to communicate with the environment, allow Luigi to enter mouse holes, can warp Luigi to the beginning of the mansion by communicating with the mirrors, it contains a full map of the mansion and it also indicates when you are nearing a Boo.

There are 50 other boos which Luigi needs to find and capture throughout the game one in each room. There are two reasons why you should try to capture all of the boo’s the first reason is because if you don’t collect enough boo’s the game won’t let you fight the final boss and the second reason is because if you collect them all you will receive a boo crystal which is worth a hell of a lot of money and this can help increase your grade at the end of the game.

 Image

For a game that came out in 2002 the graphics in Luigi’s mansion are pretty good, The overall design of the mansion is satisfying and the ghosts look really awesome, Luigi looks great too I think his facial expressions are hilarious, the one complaint about the graphics I can think of is the textures I don’t expect them to live up to video game textures of today but some things in the game look like pieces of Lego without the stumps I say some because most things in the game look great, a small complaint but nothing too disappointing.

This game doesn’t have too much music but the music you do get is really awesome and catchy, I don’t know every track in the game so I’m just gonna talk about the main theme I personally think it kicks ass plus when you beat the game the end credits theme sounds amazing it’s a really nice track and it is satisfying to hear it after beating the game.

Putting behind the fact that the game doesn’t look great in all aspects and the lack in music, I’m going to award Luigi’s Mansion an 8/10. The game is definitely no masterpiece but it’s a great game none the less and if you own a Nintendo GameCube I would recommend Luigi’s Mansion for your collection. I can’t wait for Luigi’s Mansion 2 on 3ds and from the amount of time it’s taken to make I have got high hopes for the sequel to one of my favourite GameCube titles. I hope you enjoyed this review of Luigi’s Mansion this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

In October of 2018 the game was re-made for the Nintendo 3DS and I want to just briefly go over some differences.

3DS_LuigisMansion_01

The biggest update was local multiplayer for story mode, unfortunately the multiplayer lags really badly and isn’t really worth the effort because of this. Amiibo functionality was added along side a boss rush mode, the best new feature was having the in-game map appear on the bottom screen of the 3DS at all times making exploration of the mansion much easier.

Apart from this the base game is essentially the same and this remake really does not add enough for it to be any better than the original, in fact I would still recommend the original game over this for the fact that you can experience it on a larger screen.

I hope you guys have a spooky Halloween and try not to rot you teeth with all that candy 😉

Saturday Anime Review: Mardock Scamble The First Compression

Mardock Scramble the first compression follows the story of a young girl called Rune Balot she has had a rough childhood having to deal with sexual abuse from her father. As an adult she has a profession as a prostitute. One day Rune is picked up by a Casino Manager called Shell, he is very kind to Rune but Rune does not believe he is so innocent so she does research on him on a computer, when Shell finds out he is Mad and tricks Rune into getting into a car with him but once she is in the car Shell leaves the vehicle and blows the car up with Rune inside. With all the Crime in Mardock police bring out a new law called scramble 9. Police allow a professor to modify Runes body to fit the needs of scramble 9, he then brings Rune back from the dead and both him and his mouse named Oeufcoque (who by the way can turn into anything even a car) trains Rune so she can seek revenge on her Killer.

Image

Mardock Scramble the first compression is a great movie which any action/Anime fan will love. It has a great sound track and the animation is really impressive.  The story line is very creative and it has a really great cast of characters even if a lot of them are really weird. The movie may not seem weird from this review but once you see it you will know what I mean 😉

Mardock Scramble is in no way suitable for children as it contain many scenes filled with violence and gore, it also has many different sex scenes and scenes with full frontal nudity.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Mardock Scramble the first compression this review is of my own opinion of the movie, if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Street Fighter 2 (SNES/Genesis) Review

Whether it’s the nostalgic ‘Hadouken’ or that theme that just goes with everything, we all love street fighter. Now normally I would do the first game of a series to show how it began but the first game is on a very old system that’s rare and the game sucks ass. But I will do the game that began the series we know today, the original street fighter 2 on the Super Nintendo.

Street Fighter 2 was released 4 years after the original Street Fighter as arcade machines and all across the globe children would empty their wallets of hard earned pocket money to play this iconic game. Capcom managed to get their game to be part of the fighting game boom of the 90s which would bring other companies to create fighting games such as Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, Mortal Kombat and Virtua Fighter just to name a few. The following year Capcom decided to release a version of the game on the SNES, the game would prove to be the company’s best selling game both back then and even in today’s standards. To try to cash in on the success of the game they released Street Fighter 2: Champion edition on both Arcade and on home consoles, then there was the special champion edition, then turbo, then New Challengers, then…. you know what fuck this I’m not going to go through the remakes cause there are too many and this would ruin the name of Street Fighter, well at least we’re not talking about the movie (god what a piece of shit that was).

Story

It’s basically a world tournament held to crown the world’s best fighter, of course there is a nasty plan by fighter/dictator M.Bison and his crime organisation ‘Shadaloo’ for world domination (cause that’s so original). But the beauty of Street Fighter is that the fighters all have different stories behind them with different ambitions and reasons to become the world’s greatest, whether it’s avenging your buddy or doing it for the motherland.

Graphics

The graphics of the game do well in capturing the actions of the fighters even during heavy combat or someone spamming the special moves (you know who you are), of course at the time it was groundbreaking to see 2D graphics at this level both in the arcade and at home.

Gameplay

Yet again I will mention something about this game being brand spanking new and unique the reason for that is because it is. Each character has a unique style of fighting and this can be reflected in the combos. Of course like the different fighting styles most people will be able to do them, but only a few will be able to master them.

Music

The soundtrack is very fitting for each of the scenarios that they are played in. Of course it will soon become one of the most nostalgic soundtracks in gaming, one of the songs has even become a meme because of it’s pure awesomeness (but you don’t need me to tell you that).

Final Verdict

To be honest I can’t understand if anyone wouldn’t play it, it’s one of the best fighting games ever and it has helped shape the fighting game area of the industry. Besides it’s pretty easy to get the game through it’s hundreds of remakes, but sometimes you have to go with the original.

In fact go out there and get a Street Fighter game to play on your Super Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, 3DS or whatever you want. Although make sure it’s not the one about the movie.

Super Mario 64 (N64) Review

Super Mario 64 Review (N64)

When it comes to Nintendo 64 games there is one that I believe everyone has played and that’s Super Mario 64. Super Mario 64 was the first 3d free roaming Mario game to ever be released this was a big step up from the old side scrolling Mario titles and it was also the first game which allowed us to hear what Mario voice sounded like. This game had quite a big impact on Mario fans so big in fact that there was a remake on the DS which included more playable characters and more in game levels the DS version was also very popular but I’m not here to review that game I’m here to review the original so lets a go and jump straight into this 64 bit masterpiece.

The Story

Mario receives a letter from Princess Peach telling him to go to the castle as the princess has baked a cake for him (don’t they have servants to do that) any way Mario’s a doofus and lets his hormones take over his common sense and so he leaves the dodgy letter and go’s to the castle anyway when he arrives and enters the castle he finds out the letter was fake and Bowser has kidnapped the princess and is hiding in the castle somewhere and it’s Mario’s job to go and rescue her.

The game itself

The controls in this game are perfect that’s because Mario has a lot of moves which all require a different button combination to pull off, luckily Mario 64’s controls are very easy to remember. The game play is really smooth and there is no lag when pressing the buttons, what I really love about the game play is the fact that Mario talks while you play whether it’s a yahoo or yippee it’s pretty awesome it may not be too impressive now but back when the game came out it was pretty mind blowing. The game play is not all perfect though as Mario 64 very slightly suffers from what most N64 games suffer from and that’s bad use of the in game camera,  it’s not as bad as in some games but at times the camera seems to have a mind of it s own and will hide Mario under platforms which can be annoying since at times its caused me to fall off cliffs and die.

 Graphics

The graphics in Mario 64 are beautiful and I’m not over exaggerating for a game that came out in 1996 the graphics are pretty damn impressive and with it being one of the first game to be released on the system it really showed the 3d capabilities that Nintendo are capable of producing. From beginning to end the smoothness of the graphics are really shown off with character movements, in game animations and amazing looking environments throughout. Super Mario 64 looked awesome back then and it still looks pretty awesome today.

Music

If you thought the music in Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario Land was good you haven’t heard shit until you’ve heard some of the music from Super Mario 64. Before this game came out Mario fans were used hearing catchy tunes in Mario Titles and catchy tunes is what we expected from Mario 64 but what we heard was like the sound of angels singing from the heavens it wasn’t just a catchy tunes we heard in Mario 64 instead the music was an orchestrated masterpiece today it’s not as good as the music from titles such as Mario Galaxy but back then it was just as good. My personal favourite track from the game is the final music when you’re on your way to final fight with Bowser.

 Bosses

The big guys

In every couple of paintings you will have to defeat what I like to call the big guys these are very large enemies who will usually challenge you to defeat them if you do you will earn a star they can all be defeated similarly and their not too difficult. The big guys I can remember fighting from when I was a kid are King Bob-omb, a giant Thwomp and Giant boo, King Bob-omb is my favourite because he talks about moustaches and moustaches are awesome.

Bowser

I hate this boss because every time I do it I end up with a blister this is caused by the player having to spin the joystick really fast and pressing the A button to hurl Bowser into bombs which are spread around battle area. This wouldn’t be so bad but the problem is you need to defeat Bowser four times in different locations of the castle until you finally beat the game. The whole idea to beating Bowser is to run behind him and grab his tail (This where the camera really starts play up) once you have his tail spin him around with the joystick and throw him into the bombs do this three times each time you fight Bowser to defeat him make sure you avoid his fire balls though because they take away a lot of health. Once you beat Bowser you see the final cut seen before the end credits to legendary game.

Final Verdict

I love this game and I going to give it an 8/10 because apart from the annoying camera angles and the game physically hurting me it’s a really awesome experience and it was the first 3d Mario game that Nintendo ever made it also really revolutionised the world of gaming so if you own a Nintendo 64 and you don’t have Mario 64 in your collection go out and buy it because it’s pretty bad ass and its great game to have your shelf.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Super Mario 64 this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) Review

Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) Review

Super Mario Bros 3 if like me you enjoy playing old Nintendo games every time you say or hear that name you feel like a god why you may ask I will tell why you feel like a god because its Super Mario Bros 3. Considered to be the one of the greatest video games of all time Mario 3 really left an impact on our childhoods it was the game that made up for Super Mario Bros 2 and it showed what kind of game play, graphics and sound the NES was capable of producing, but enough of me having a nerdgasm lets get on with the review.

The Story

The story to this game is simple but awesome take a wild guess what happens I’m going to give you five seconds  5 4 3 2 1 still don’t know well Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser and Mario has to save her geez what a shock. This may seem cliché but there is a small twist Bowser now has seven children known as the Koopa kids each of these kids have some sort magic staff which gave them the power to take over 7 kingdoms using the staffs to turn the kings of each land in to animals. This means that as well as defeating Bowser Mario needs to take out each of the Koopa kids as well other than that it’s a basic Mario story line.

The game itself

The game controls for Mario 3 are perfect there is no delay on the controls throughout the entire game. As you may have guessed there are many different ways to attack your foes in this game you can jump on enemies to defeat them shoot fireballs with the power flower, become invincible with the power star, Throw hammers with the hammer bros hammer and you can hit enemies with your tanookie suit tail. The tanookie suit is my favourite suit in the game because of one small thing it allows Mario to fly yes that’s right you can fucking fly in this game it may not be that special now in 2012 but trust me in 1991 this was the greatest thing ever and I’m so glad they brought back the tanookie suit Super Mario 3D land.

Graphics

As well as being an amazing experience Mario 3 looks amazing too it’s brightly coloured throughout the entire game, it has amazing character detail and overall its one of the happiest looking games I have ever played. I love this game so much I think it looks better than the Legend of Zelda and trust me a game needs to be pretty fucking impressive for me to say that.

download

Music

The Music in this game is amazing now the NES had a lot of games which suffered from non enjoyable soundtracks but there are few NES games out there which have soundtracks which in my opinion are better than most video game soundtracks from modern games if you like the soundtrack to halo go play any of the Mega Man games and you’ll see what I mean and once you’ve played Mega Man go Play Mario 3 because it provides a soundtrack that you don’t wanna miss out on. Another aspect about the Music in Mario 3 I love is the amount of different tracks in the game just like Mc Kids there is almost a new track for every single level and there are 48 levels in this game and for the NES to be able to produce a new track for each of them levels is pretty god damn impressive.

Bosses

There are three different kinds of bosses in Mario 3

The Gatekeepers- OK there not really called the gatekeepers there called boom booms but they hold the keys to the gates in the first 7 worlds, opening these gates allows Mario to have a check point so that if you get game over you don’t have to start at the beginning of the world and instead you can start from half way through, any way to defeat these guys you got to jump on their heads three times and once defeated you can then earn the gatekeepers key.

The seven Koopa kids- Just like the gate keepers to defeat the seven Koopa kids you got to jump on their heads three times to defeat them but don’t think this is an easy talk to do the Koopa kids become really challenging towards the end of the game. The Koopa kids each look different and each have different skills which they use to the best of their abilities some are faster than others, some are stronger than others, some are big, and some are small and so on.

Bowser- I love this Final boss because Bowser pretty much kills himself which is hilarious instead of jumping on Bowser’s head you fight him on top of a load of bricks and Bowser tries to squish Mario with giant turtle ass all Mario’s got to do is avoid Bowser and eventually he will fall through the bricks the final battle isn’t as easy as it sounds though just like the Koopa kids Bowser provides a lot of challenge but he’s not too difficult.

Final Verdict

It’s probably no surprise that I’m going to give Super Mario Bros 3 a 10/10 because it’s one of the greatest video of all time and with good reasons, it never gets boring, it looks and sounds great and overall it’s an experience you should never live without and it will live in our hearts forever it isn’t just game is Super Mario Bros 3 man it feels good to say that. I hope you enjoyed this review of Super Mario Bros 3 this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Mc Kids NES Review

Mc Kids (NES) Review

You know that great game on the NES super Mario Bros 3 yeah that games awesome right, with all the different worlds you can visit the creative level designs, fun boss fights , amazing music and overall a great experience which will live in our hearts forever.

Image

Now imagine if Mc Donald’s took that game and cooked up a rip-off so bad that it gives us the opposite effect boring level designs, only one pathetic boss fight at the end, music so annoying it can drive you insane and a story line so stupid a kindergartener could have come up with a better one, well I hate to say this but that did happen and what we got left with was a horrible abomination known as M.C Kids or Mc Donald’s Land if you live in Europe.

 Image

 The story

The two game heroes Mick and Mac are reading a book in a tent about Ronald Mc Donald and his magic bag.  The next day Mick and Mac are approached by Ronald Mc Donald he wants their help because the Hamburgular has stolen his magic bag and Mick or Mac depending on which character you chose has to go through all the different Mc Donald’s worlds to find Hamburgular so they can retrieve the bag and return it to Ronald.

It always puzzled me why Ronald Mc Donald would ask two Children he has never met to help him,  don’t they have police in Mc Donald’s Land and why these two kids is it because they are reading a book about him and fate brought them together or maybe he’s just a paedophile yeah that’s probably it.

ImageThe game itself

I got to admit the game controls do feel quite smooth as there is not a delay when you are jumping or attacking.

You’re attack throughout the game is pretty stupid you have to throw blocks at enemies to kill them and this is the only way,  if you try to jump on an enemy like Mario you will lose part of your health.

 Image

You’re health is displayed as hearts sort of like a Zelda game the only difference is that Zelda games are actually fun to play unlike this piece of crap.

Apart from those terrible Zelda games on CDI their even worse.

 ImageThe Six Lands

Just like Super Mario Bros 3 you walk across an overview map to select a stage and the idea of the game is to make your way through a number of themed Lands before you can confront the final boss. Mc kids does play its cards a little differently though as the game itself will not allow you to proceed to the following worlds without collecting a set number of character cards which are hidden throughout the different levels. The idea of having to collect items to proceed just didn’t feel right in this game as it made the whole experience really frustrating and with the game not being fun to play on its own this feature only makes the whole experience much worse.

The six worlds include

1. Ronald’s Clubhouse

2. Birdies Tree-house

3. Grimace Highlands

4. Professors Workshop

5. Cosmc’s Retreat

6. Hamburgular’s Hideout

While adventuring across the six lands you will come across a lot of in game enemies which Mick and Mac should try and avoid at all costs, these enemies are pretty pathetic as they mostly consist of cute furry forest animals which never seem to be doing anything that could possibly be a threat to Mick and Mac, but touching the animals will still take Mick and Macs life away so your best bet will be to kill them providing you can actually find enough blocks to kill the animals with.

Graphics

The graphics in this game look bad even for NES standards there is hardly any detail on the characters, levels or enemies and Mick and Mac look like really creepy dolls in the beginning cut scene

Image

The game suffers from a really limited colour palette a lot of the enemies seem to just be one colour and overall the game just looks really depressing. Now I realise the NES is only capable of using a small amount of colours and that it runs on 8 bit graphics but take a look at a screen shot from Mc Kids and Super Mario Bros 3 side by side Super Mario Bros 3 looks much more cheerful and colourful than Mc Kids and Super Mario Bros 3 came out the year before Mc Kids got released.

Music

The music in the game suits the levels really well as it really helps the game give off a nice relaxing feeling when you first begin and it gets more and more intense throughout the entire game. The problem with the music is that it gets boring and annoying fast as it always seems to be a small tune which is looped constantly especially the music in the Final world where the music is so annoying I usually do that part with the TV on mute. The Music in Mc Kids is really the marmite of the game you either love it or you hate it.

Bosses

There is only one boss though out the entire game and it’s not Hamburgular it’s the magic bag itself, it’s a pretty pathetic boss battle since all you have to do is throw rocks at the items the bag throws at you.

Eventually a rabbit in a hat pops out throw a few rocks at the rabbit and that’s it the game ends with a really shitty ending which I’m not going to explain just in case you guys actually want to play this game.

Final Verdict

I’m going to give Mc Kids for the NES a 5/10 because it may not be a good game but it’s not a terrible game either because it does have some enjoyable aspects it just suffers from a lot of serious issues which really take away the experience the game is trying to give, Mc kids is a mixed opinions game so it deserves a fair rating of 5/10. I hope you enjoyed this review of Mc Kids this is my opinion of the game if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Next Week I will review the game Mc Kids wanted to be Super Mario Bros 3
