Book Review: Jack Dawkins by Terry Ward

I would like to say a big thank you to Publishers Push and the author of this book Terry Ward for supplying me with a review copy of this book.

This excellent book by author Terry Ward follows the story of Jack Dawkins better known as the Artful Dodger in the Charles Dickens classic novel Oliver Twist

The story continues where Jack’s fate was hinted at in Oliver Twist presumably being sent to an Australian penal colony after being caught stealing a silver snuff box.

In this continuation of the Dodgers story, Jack Dawkins is given one last chance to change his ways narrowly escaping the punishment he was lined up for.

Jack is sent to live with a man called Mr Godden who gives Jack work to do on his farm, his beautiful daughter Lysette catches Jack’s eye and she soon becomes the new focus of the Dodgers life.

Jack Dawkins by Terry Ward is a splendid book that shows the Artful Dodger in a new light, the book shows the past criminal as a caring and brave individual who shows several acts of heroism throughout the story in order to gain the heart of the person he loves.

In another side plot in relation to the Dodgers parents we see an emotional side to Jack that makes you feel for the character and root for his success.

My favourite part of the book was the love that Jack felt for Lysette Godden, I love a good romance so this soon got me hooked on the story, I also really enjoyed the references to Jacks criminal past as well as some character appearances from the Charles Dickens book Oliver Twist.

Jack Dawkins by Terry Ward may be one of the best books I have read in a long time, it is an excellent take on the Artful Dodger that gives the character more humanity and in my opinion makes him more likeable, the author was very brave to write a story based on such a timeless character but he did a wonderful job and I will be look out for Terry Wards books in the future.

5 STAR REVIEWS FOR JACK DAWKINS’!!
Jack Dawkins, AKA as the Artful Dodger, wants to set the record straight about what happened to him after he was obliged to take up lodgings in Newgate Prison. Thanks to the genius of Lionel Bart, we all have a lasting image of him skipping away into the sunset, arm in arm with Fagin. Well, the young jackanapes is here to tell you that the truth is very different.
You don’t have to know your way round archaic words, history or the works of Mr. Dickens, because Jack has very kindly provided a Glossary that you can refer to as he relates in his own inimitable fashion, his encounters with an unusually erudite Bow Street Runner, murderous villains, turnkeys, philanthropists, Innkeepers, Owlers, passing strangers-and Miss Lysette Godden, the first human being he has ever loved. Strangely enough, Jack also reveals that, as he conducts what proves to be a highly dangerous search for his mother and father, he finds his true self.

I thought you might like to take a look at Jack Dawkins’ ghost-writer.
You can see more of both of us on the You Tube video ‘the spirit of the Artful Dodger’,
in which Jack does the decent thing by returning from ‘Mutton Pie and Porter heaven’ to give me a helping hand.

JACK DAWKINS- being the further adventures of the Artful Dodger’

 by

Terry Ward.

In which the Artful Dodger expresses his opinions on:

Fagin:  He reminded me of one of those ravens you see strutting about, frightening the pigeons.

Poverty:  ‘Youi ought to try living on the streets of London, summer and winter; it’s an education.’

Judges; ‘I can’t stand their type.  They’ll condemn an out of work man for stealing enough to keep his family alive, then go home to a mansion and a two-hour dinner.’

Army generals:  ‘Kill one man and they’ll hang you for it.  Kill a hundred thousand and they’ll put up a statue with your name on it.’

Romance:  Well, there’s kissing and there’s kissing, isn’t there?

Sex: ‘You don’t spend your life living in overcrowded warrens without noticing things you ought not. I’ve seen just about everything from life being made and born, to death having the last laugh, so you’d better think again about what I can and can’t do.’

Down on the farm: ‘Farming is a disgusting business. Horse dung, pig dung and

cow dung keep piling up in pens and all over the yard. It makes

me grateful that the two hundred sheep Mr Godden told me he

owns are doing it in the fields, otherwise we’d be up to our necks

in the stuff in no time.’

Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (1987) Review

Ooh a sequel to the legend of Zelda, I cannot wait !!

Zelda_II_The_Adventure_of_Link_boxart

Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link is the weirdest Zelda game I have ever played, it was the second game released in the franchise and is considered to be the black sheep of the Legend of Zelda series, so without further ado lets check out Links second adventure.

images

After destroying Ganon in the first game, it is revealed by Impa that Princess Zelda has had a sleeping curse cast on her and will only awaken when the seal protecting the triforce of wisdom is broken, Link can only break the seal by placing six crystals into statues hidden in palaces across the land.

zelda-2.na3

The game has an over world which is kind of similar to most of the 2D Zelda games although I wouldn’t expect to be finding too many secrets here if I was you, I found the over world to be quite bare with it mostly being used for grinding Experience Points and traversing between areas..

Zelda_II_The_Adventure_of_Link_(3)

Zelda 2 an action adventure 2D Plat-former with RPG elements, this was definitely a risky direction to take the series and thankfully it didn’t stick because while this game isn’t necessarily bad, if its game style became the series staple we may not have the amazing Zelda games we have today.

When traversing the over world Link can be forced into action platforming sections which require him to defeat enemies in order to gain experience points which can be used to upgrade his health, magic or strength once he levels up.

005

Through out the game you can find many towns which can be used to heal, restore magic and to find wizards who can teach you spells, in order to find these wizards you normally have do something for example one wizard requires you to find a magic mirror and another requires you bring the wizards daughter a trophy you can find in a cave at the start of the game.

PQ90kq

The palaces have Link defeating enemies, collecting keys and opening doors in order to find the statues however in traditional Zelda fashion the palaces are tricky to traverse but with the platforming game style this feels more like a Metroid game in my opinion, at the end of each palace you must fight one of the very creative and difficult boss fights before finding the statues and handing over a crystal.

download

Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link is an ok adventure game but it is far from a good Legend of Zelda title in my opinion, the biggest issue I have is that the games difficulty is unfair, there is a lot of grinding to do if you want any chance of finishing it, areas such as death mountain are too long with few power ups to help you survive and every time you get game over you are sent back to the first screen of the game, on a lighter note the game has a nice soundtrack, colourful and fantastic visuals and responsive controls but apart from that this is one Zelda game you could quite happily skip unless you really want to play it. 5.5/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link for the Nintendo Entertainment System

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Review

220px-Invasion_of_the_body_snatchers_movie_poster_1978The 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a science fiction horror film that was directed by Phillips Kaughman and stars Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Lenord Nimoy, Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum, it should also be noted that this is a remake of a 1956 film of the same name and is based on a book called The Body Snatchers which was written by Jack Finney.

uxVNAc

Matthew Bennell a health inspector in the city of San Francisco begins to notice a pattern of people saying that their love ones have changed some even going as far to say that they are not the same people.

bodysnatchers1Later on in the film it becomes obvious that something supernatural is happening to people as human beings are being copied and replaced when they are re-birthed by plants leaving their old bodies to corrode at a rapid pace and a new pod person taking their place in life.

Invasion-of-the-Body-Snatchers-1978-movie-still

The film has a great premise and fantastic cast to go with it, out of all of the big names in the movie my favourite performance was by none other than Jeff Goldblum who played Jack although I felt that everyone was the perfect choice for their roles.

invasion-of-the-body-snatchers-1978-donald-sutherland-pod-people-cloning

This film doesn’t really have a unique alien design as the aliens are essentially clones of the people they snatch, however the birthing process is very disturbing and gross, watching the pod people come out of the flowers always gives me the shivers.

The 1978 remake of Invasion of the body Snatchers is a disturbingly good time and a film with a very interesting premise, its one of the best horror films on the market and is one you should try and stick on this Halloween.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Super Metroid (1994) Review

downloadSuper Metroid is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System Game and is the third game in the Metroid Franchise, it is a direct sequel to Metroid 2 Return of Samus.

Similar to its predecessors Super Metroid is an Action Adventure Game which was developed and published by Nintendo.

FWv.540x304

After bringing a baby metroid to scientists for study, Samus receives a distress call after Ridley steals the baby metroid and kills every human in his sight, Samus travels back to the Planet Zebes (Location in first Metroid game) in order to rescue the baby metroid once again.

140128-supermetroid112

Like its predecessors Samus is first only armed with her trusty arm cannon however with some exploration using the new map system you can easily find new weapons and upgrades, introduced in Super Metroid was the gravity suit which allows Samus to move freely through liquid environments such as Lava, the grapple beam which allows Samus to grapple and swing from certain terrains making traversing certain areas a lot easier and the final new addition worth mentioning is the hyper beam that is only available for one segment of the mission however it is the most powerful weapon in the game and is great fun to use.

That_s_one_doomed_Space_Marine_As I previously stated Super Metroid introduces a map system however it is still far from easy to not get lost, the map while useful will only update if you either reach an area of the game therefore unlocking it on the map or by finding hidden map rooms that will unlock large chunks of the map for you however this will not show where bosses or upgrades are hiding so be wary of  where you are going.

hqdefaultSuper Metroids visuals are stunning and are easily some of the best in the series, the artists pushed the SNES to its limits on this one giving us a perfect blend of dark and protruding colours leaving the game with a creepy yet exciting feeling to it, I had a blast seeing all of the different areas of the game however I must say that the boss designs took the cake for me, I really enjoyed to designs for Kraid (pictured above) and Crocomire however they were all fantastic and suited their respected areas nicely.

As much as I really enjoyed the first two Metroid games I wasn’t too fond of the soundtracks as I found both of them lacking in tracks and quality, I am pleased to say that Super Metroid has a stellar soundtrack, its creepy and a lot of fun, the game has plenty of music throughout choosing to use slower and more creepier tracks to emphasise the the emptiness and danger of the corridors while using faster and more exciting tracks to pump up the adrenaline for more dangerous scenarios such as boss fights and escape sequences.

Super Metroid is an amazing entry to the franchise and is a fan favourite of many Metroid players, it is better than its predecessors in every regard due to its beautiful and artistic graphics, amazing and scary soundtrack and great controls, the only issue I had with the game is very small and that is trying to perform a move called a wall jump, it was awkward to pull off and at times it had me a little frustrated but its only really needed once in the game so its not so bad, Super Metroid is an amazing journey and it is well worthy of a 9.8/10

I hope you enjoyed this review of Super Metroid if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Dark Skies (2013) Review

Dark_Skies_1-Sht.indd

Dark Skies is a Science Fiction horror movie directed by Scott Stewart and starring Keri Russell, J.K. Simmons and Josh Hamilton.

8RixCaThe Barrett family enjoy the simple life in a quiet American town, that is until strange occurrences begin happening around the house and eventually to themselves.

OwbFtL

After some of the unusual activity becomes very concerning Lacy and Daniel decide to visit Edwin Pollard an alien specialist who tells them that they are being visited by an alien species called the greys who select humans for taking.

S4TG71

The greys tend to take children most of the time and the Barrett family become very concerned that one of their children may have been selected for taking by the greys.

Dark_SkiesThe alien design in Dark Skies isn’t too creative but is immediately recognisable, you will notice that they look rather generic and are very similar to how aliens are portrayed in most media.

dark-skies-4657

Overall the entire cast did a good job of portraying their characters but one person who really stood out was Keri Russel who played Lacy Barrett the mother of the family, she gave a performance which felt real to me almost as if the children in the film were her real children as she comforted and protected them, she also gave an excellent performance throughout all of her other scenes and was genuinely a joy to watch.

Dark Skies was a surprisingly good film, I wasn’t expecting much from it but it managed to cut down on the jump scares and gave a really creepy vibe, the greys are terrifying and the mere presence of them in the film sent shivers down my spine, give it a watch if you get the chance.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Dark Skies (2013) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Alien Resurrection (1997) Review

alien,-la-resurrection-21300Next in the Alien franchise is 1997’s Alien Resurrection which was Directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet and was written by Joss Whedon.

alienres300_zps0b7b56db200 years after the events of Alien 3 Ellen Ripley is cloned and the Alien Queen that was in her chest has been removed.

hqdefaultThe reason Ripley was cloned was because scientists wanted to bring back and clone the Xenomorphs for studying

After an unfortunate issue with the imprisoned Xenomorph clones the creatures manage to escape onto the ship leaving Ripley and a group of mercenaries to find a way to escape and destroy the creatures once and for all.

hqdefault (1)

This movie is by far the most unnecessary and pointless of the Alien films, but in its defence it is way more fun than Alien 3, its extremely silly in so many ways that you have to wonder if it was ever intended to be taken seriously, some of my favourite silly moments include the basketball scene, the scene where Johner shoots a small spider and the ridiculous death of General Perez.

imageedit_1_6671231649The film is not all silliness though as it does have a couple of disturbing scenes, the most memorable has got to be when Ripley finds her failed clones with one in particular begging for death.

alien-resurrection-cast

Even though its fair to say that this movie is not very good I have to admit that I really love the cast, everyone in this movie is over the top and full of sass and one liners even Sigourney Weaver doesn’t seem to take the role too seriously and this overacting from the cast suits the tone of the movie extremely well. Winona Ryder is in the film playing a character called Call, I wouldn’t say this is one of her best roles but she is still good none the less.

Alien Resurrection is considered to be one of the worst films ever put to screen and while I will admit that its not a good Alien movie it is a really entertaining watch, its cheesy, packed with action scenes and is hilarious, it never needed to exist and probably shouldn’t have but if you don’t take it seriously I can guarantee that you will enjoy it.

The Thing (1982) Review

thething1.jpg

The Thing is a Sci Fi and Horror movie written by Bill Lancaster and Directed by John Carpenter.

MV5BNTJkMjZkMWYtODA4NS00Y2E0LWJmZWEtMzZjY2Q1NDE0Y2RjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzc5NjM0NA@@._V1_

The Thing follows the story of American researchers in Antarctica who due to an unfortunate incident discover a strange alien creature that is able to take the form of any living entity it consumes, after discovering malformed humanoid bodies and a dog that had been affected the men become paranoid of who they can trust as the creature could have taken the form of anyone in the group.

The_Kennel-Thing_puts_out_tentacles_-_The_Thing_(1982)For me the best part of the film was the creature design, of course technically the creature can take the form of any living organism it pleases, however its the grotesque visuals when the creature is in mid transformation that it is most visually pleasing, each time this happens the form it takes is different but all of them are disgusting and really horrifying.

endjc3The entire cast is memorable and so are the characters they play but by far the two most recognisable actors who also give the best performance in my opinion are Keith David who plays Childs who you may recognise from my review of They Live and Kurt Russell who plays Macready the lead character of the film but putting these two aside everyone in the film did a fantastic job.

The Thing is an amazing film and the suspense and mystery of it is something that you don’t see much in films today, you don’t know where the creature is for a large chunk of the movie and while the characters in the film don’t know who to trust neither does the audience, and even to this day some questions about the creature have gone unanswered leaving many viewers to have to try and theorise certain areas of the movie for themselves.

I hope you enjoyed this review of The Thing (1982) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Alien 3 (1992) Review

81hSkdNKqdL._RI_SX200_Alien 3 is the third movie in the alien franchise, it was directed by David Fincher who before directing Alien 3 was mostly known for directing short films and documentaries, after Alien 3 David Fincher went on to make a lot of classic movies including Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Fight Club.

theatrical-cut

After escaping the Ship Sulaco at the end of Aliens a fire is started in the escape pod where Ellen Ripley and three other individuals were sleeping in cryonic stasis, the escape pod crashes on a prison planet where the inmates discover the wreckage and pull out Ripley the only survivor along with the bodies of those who perished.

Its quickly discovered that an Xenomorph was the cause of the fire and is now running freely in the prison killing everyone is sight leaving Ripley the only person with experience with the creatures having to take a leadership role in order to save the inhabitants of the planet, she also discovers that she has been impregnated with a Xenomorph cutting down the amount of time she has to do this

tumblr_memklxmkfl1qkcj94o1_1280The plot of Alien 3 is ok and it follows the story in a way that does make sense however within 15 minutes everyone apart from Ripley who survived in Aliens dies, these characters are given a very lazy send off and it really puts me off the film, I wouldn’t mind it as much if they maybe put a bit more effort into killing them off.

Put it this way imagine if you had just finished watching the Fellowship of the Ring so you decide to put on the Two Towers and the film opens with Frodo crying  because Sam died in his sleep.

How dumb does that sound?

Alien-3-05-gAlien 3 is just about as cheesy as aliens but maybe a little more serious, I didnt like the acting too much in this one as a lot of the lines felt forced however the cast was a lot of fun and the dialogue was silly enough to be funny, I cant get a decent picture of the Xenomorph however I have to admit that unfortunately it looks like it had just been pulled straight from a PS2 game and is not very scary in my opinion.

I know I havent said too many nice things about this movie however with all its faults its still a decent film, it has some good action scenes and some memorable deaths including one where a man who has been blinded by the alien accidentally rolls into an industrial fan, it also marks what I can only gather was supposed to be the end of Ellen Ripleys story and a scene at the end of the film where Ellen does the only thing she can to prevent another alien being brought into the world is really cool and and is one of the most epic moments in the franchise.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Alien 3 (1992) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

Aliens (1986) Review

Aliens_posternine years after the first movie, a sequel to Alien was made and this time James Cameron took the directors chair, before writing and directing aliens, James Cameron had done the same for the Terminator two years prior.

aliens_05Fifty seven years after the first movie Ellen Ripley is discovered sleeping in status in a shuttle that is floating through space, after being rescued her employers do not believe her claims that an Alien slaughtered her entire crew and left her with no choice but too blow up the ship.

Acheron_HadleysHope_pan

A colony has been set up where the alien eggs were found in the first movie,  when contact with the colony is lost Ripley is asked to go with a group of marines to check out the disturbance, while at first unsure Ripley eventually agrees and goes along after it is confirmed to her that the mission is to completely destroy the Xenomorphs.

Aliens-inside

Aliens is more of a cheesy action movie when compared to the dark and creepy horror film which was the original, this film is crazy fun and has all of the cliches to go with it, you have a sarcastic sergeant who always has a cigar in his mouth, a bad ass child character who is way more useful than any of the adults and some crazy marines that are full of banter and funny one liners, this may seem strange when compared to the first movie but the silly nature works surprisingly well here and the combination of scares, action and silliness helps to make this my favourite film in the franchise.

Aliens-Newt

Speaking of our child actor I want to give some credit to Carrie Henn that played Rebecca Jordan aka Newt, Newt was discovered by Ripley and the marines during the mission, Newt is an orphan who lost her brother and mother to the aliens and once she finds trust in Ripley she helps her and the marines with the mission. Newt is a great character and it adds more tension to the movie when there is a child involved and she is just fairly bad ass throughout making the audience root for her survival.

Alien-Sigourney-WeaverThe set for Aliens is very similar to the first movie however there are more of them and since more lights are used in the film they help to show more details of the architecture. In my personal opinion I think the sets in Aliens are cooler, way more interesting and way more scary, the first film was scary because you couldn’t see much of the Alien but here there are loads of them and you get to see all of the grisly details up close including a horrific cocooning scene where the aliens cocoon their victims next to a non hatched Face Hugger egg leaving the victim forced into a grizzly fate.

Aliens is an amazing sequel to one of the scariest movies of all time, the first film created a genre while this one expanded on that and  gave us a different take on the series, this the alien movie where aliens get blasted, flattened, burned alive and blown to bits and its awesome, the movie once again ended on a cliff hanger leaving audience desperate for more.

I hope you enjoyed this review of Aliens (1986) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.

They Live (1988) Review

2575

They Live is a 1988 Sci Fi and Horror movie written and Directed by John Carpenter.

maxresdefault

The movie stars professional wrestler Roddy Piper who plays John Nada a drifter who finds a construction job in LA, in the job he makes a friend called Frank Armitage who was played by Keith David.

theylive1988While visiting a soup kitchen John Nada discovers a church in which a secret meeting is being held, after a police raid which destroys the shanty town where the church is located John returns to the church and finds boxes filled with sun glasses, it is quickly discovered that while wearing the glasses you are able to see subliminal messages such as consume, stay asleep and obey hidden behind advertisements as well as the ability to see alien creatures hiding behind human disguises, the aliens soon learn that John had learned their secret and he becomes a fugitive with his only chance of saving the human race is revealing the secret to the rest of the world.

nh3pffxsxel6cdhrrqfmThe design for the aliens in They Live may look more like a zombie than it does an extraterrestrial, the reason for this design is so that it makes more sense that they could disguise them selves as humans due to the fact that they have similar bone structure and shape making them more believable when they are in disguise.

foster_meg1I have no complaints with the casting of the movie by far the best performance was Roddy Piper who did a lot of improvisation including the famous line “I came her to chew bubble gum and kick ass and I’m all out of bubble gum” as well as also giving a lot of help when filming an epic alley fight scene. Meg Foster also did a great job with her portrayal of Holly Thompson a Cable 54 assistant director and its only fair to mention Keith David who played Frank.

They Live is an awesome movie which is scary because in an odd sense its realistic, advertisements really can be quite corrupt and brain washing after watching the movie I began thinking about the advertisements I see, an ad for Mc Donalds is telling us to consume and things such as the law or general rules are forcing us to obey, perhaps I am thinking too much into the premise of a movie but the fact that it got me to stop and think is a sign of a very clever film.

I hope you enjoyed this review of They Live (1988) if you respect my opinion I will respect yours.
